  • In this paper, we address vulnerabilities of legacy VOD system and implement secure-VOD system to protect security holes of it. Our secure-VOD system provide user authentication using one-time password, message authentication and encryption/decryption for video server information. To improve security of existing fixed password system, our secure-VOD system use one-time password. Also, our secure-VOD system provides integrity for video server information by generating and verifying message authentication code using HMAC-HAS 160 algorithm. Finally, our secure-VOD system uses RC5 encryption algorithm to guarantee confidentiality for video server information.

  • Linux cluster Server makes a high performance PC cluster system, and provides scalablity and availability as compared with an expensive single server. In this paper, we design and implement a VOD streaming service system to serve video and audio streaming services on the Linux cluster server. Our Streaming server supports the MS Window Media Format based on the RTSP streaming protocol.

  • It is strongly believed that Video on Demand(VOD) will become one of the most promising services for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network(B-ISDN). VOD service can be classified into two types of services: Near VOD(NVOD) and Interactive VOD(IVOD). Although VOD network requires many kinds of resources, we only consider video servers, programs. and storages. In the network. some video servers should be installed at some nodes(especially, at the root node for NVOD service). so that each node with video server stores video programs and distributes stored programs to customers. We take into account three kinds of costs related with the above resources: a program transmission cost, a program storage cost, and a video server installation cost. There exists a trade-off relationship among those three costs according to the locations of video servers and the kinds of programs stored at each video server. Given a multi-level VOD network and the total number of programs being served in the network. the resource. optimization problem for providing both IVOD and NVOD services is to determine where to install video servers, and which and how many programs should be stored at each video server, in order to minimize the total cost. In this paper we develop an efficient dynamic programming algorithm to solve the problem. We also implement the algorithm based on two different service policies assumed in this paper.

  • For large scale VOD service, cluster servers are spotlighted to their high performance and low cost. A cluster server usually consists of a front-end node and multiple back-end nodes. Though increasing the number of back-end nodes can result in the more QoS streams for clients, the possibility of failures in back-end nodes is proportionally increased. The failure causes not only the stop of all streaming service but also the loss of the current playing positions. In this paper, when a back-end node becomes a failed state, the recovery mechanisms are studied to support the unceasing streaming service. For the actual VOD service environment, we implement a cluster-based VOD servers composed of general PCs and adopt the parallel processing for MPEG movies. From the implemented VOD server, a video block recovery mechanism is designed on parity algorithms. However, without considering the architecture of cluster-based VOD server, the application of the basic technique causes the performance bottleneck of the internal network for recovery and also results in the inefficiency CPU usage of back-end nodes. To address these problems, we propose a new failure recovery mechanism based on the pipeline computing concept.

  • This paper presents a PC cluster-based distributed VOD server that minimizes the load of an interconnection network by adopting the VIA communication protocol and the interval cache algorithm. Video data is distributed to the disks of the distributed VOD server and each server node receives the data through the interconnection network and sends it to clients. The load of the interconnection network increases because of the large amount of video data transferred. This paper developed a distributed VOD file system, which is based on VIA, to minimize cost using interconnection network when accessing remote disks. VIA is a user-level communication protocol removing the overhead of TCP/IP. This papers also improved the performance of the interconnection network by expanding the maximum transfer size of VIA. In addition, the interval cache reduces traffic on the interconnection network by caching, in main memory, the video data transferred from disks of remote server nodes. Experiments using the distributed VOD server of this paper showed a maximum performance improvement of 21.3% compared with a distributed VOD server without VIA and the interval cache, when used with a four-node PC cluster.

  • Striping is a scheme that partitions data into blocks and distributes the blocks on different servers in a well defined order and thus could improve system capacity through load balance. In this paper, we propose a parallel VOD server and striping policies for load balancing when extra storage nodes are attached to a parallel VOD server for insufficient disk space in that VOD server. When new video data is stored on the attached storage node, the node may be overloaded. Since it decreases the system bandwidth, appropriate striping policies are required. We therefore present three striping policies that move some block of data o existing nodes into the new node and distribute the new data across all the storage nodes including the new node. Our experiment result shows that FSM bi-direction is the most effective technique.

  • This paper presents implementation of client-based VOD service using multicast delivery, Conventional system provide server-based system in multicast delivery but implemented system provides on-demand client-based multicast system. The Multicast Agent Scheduler aggregates clients' request and it generate multicast group addresses and port numbers according to requested video items and service request time. Then it transmits immediately multicast address to VOD server and client who request service. And then VOD server transmits requested streams with a multicast group address and the client joins the group automatically. The Multicast Agent Scheduler assigns the same multicast group address when other clients request an identical video within the same scheduling duration. The proposed system can reduce load of server and support many clients at the same time and applies it to WMT(window media technology) of Microsoft.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented a personal VOD server using multi-thread for the real-time services of video data to the users. The system consists of service manager, disk manager, and network manager. The service manager controls the user admission to the system using the VBR(Variable Bit Rate) characteristics of MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) video data. The disk manager provides the functions for VCR-like operations. The disk manager reads blocks from the disk by the size of GOP(Group of Pictures) and buffers the data to the user's thread. The network manager uses TCP/IP for the communication between the server and the client. The communication starts from the client and the VOD server must respond to this request. The implemented personal VOD system shows an acceptable performance.

  • A Viedo-on-Demand(VOD) service is a multimedia service that is realized by the rapid advance of computer and data communication techmologies. Basically, a VOD system is composed of a server and a number fo clients. The server stores and manages a large amount of digital moving picture data. Each slient sends an on-line requwet to the server and receives data for real-time displying. Many researches are performed on a VOD server using hard disks for the permanent video fata storage. However, a hard disk is less reliable and requires more storage cost than a massive storage device. Due to these resasons, a multi-level VOD system is proposed for using teh jukeboxes of optical disks as the permanent video storage, device. In this paper, we prpose the necessary software modules and protocols between the server and its clients for the implementation of the multi-level VOD server.

  • This paper presents a PC cluster-based distributed video on demand (VOD) server that minimizes the load of the interconnection network by adopting channel bonding-based MVIA and the interval cache algorithm Video data is distributed to the disks of each server node of the distributed VOD server and each server node receives the data through the interconnection network and sends it to clients. The load of the interconnection network increases because of the large volume of video data transferred. We adopt two techniques to reduce the load of the interconnection network. First, an Msupporting channel bonding technique is adopted for the interconnection network. n which is a user-level communication protocol that reduces the overhead of the TCP/IP protocol in cluster systems, minimizes the time spent in communicating. We increase the bandwidth of the interconnection network using the channel bonding technique with MThe channel bonding technique expands the bandwidth by sending data concurrently through multiple network cards. Second, the interval cache reduces traffic on the interconnection network by caching the video data transferred from the remote disks in main memory Experiments using the distributed VOD server of this paper showed a maximum performance improvement of $30\%$ compared with a distributed VOD server without channel bonding-based MVIA and the interval cache, when used with a four-node PC cluster.
