국내 대기 중 독성 휘발성 유기화합물의 오염 특성(II) -계절 및 지역적 변동 (Characteristics of Atmospheric Concentrations of Toxic Volatile Organic Compounds in Korea (II) - Seasonal and Locational Variations)

  • This study was designed to investigate the characteristics of atmospheric concentrations of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Korea. Target compounds included 1,3-butadiene, aromatics such as BTEX, and a number of carbonyl compounds. In this paper, as the second part of the study, the seasonal and locational concentrations of atmospheric VOCs were evaluated. Sampling was conducted seasonally at seven sampling sites. each of them representing a large urban area (commercial and residential), a small urban area (commercial and residential), an industrial area (a site within the complex and a residential), and a background place in Korea. In general, higher concentrations were found in the petro-chemical industrial site than other sites, while VOCs measured in commercial (heavy -traffic) sites were higher than residential sites. Seasonality of VOCs concentrations were not so much clear as other combustion related pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, indicating that the VOCs are emitted from a variety of sources, not only vehicle exhaust and point sources but fugitive emissions. Except the industrial site, the concentrations of VOCs measured in this study do not reveal any serious pollution status, since the levels did not exceed any existing ambient standards in the U.K. and/or Japan. However, the increasing number of petrol -powered vehicles and the rapid industrialization in Korea may result in the increased levels of VOCs concentrations in many large urban areas in the near future, if there is no appropriate programme implemented for the control of these compounds.

공기분사공정에 의한 유류오염대수층의 TPH, $CO_2$, VOCs 변화 특성 (TPH, $CO_2$ and VOCs Variation Characteristics of Diesel Contaminated Aquifer by In-situ Air Sparging)

  • 공기분사공정법은 포화대수층에 존재하는 유기화합오염물질들을 대기로부터 주입된 공기에 의해 불포화층으로 휘발시켜 제거하는 기술을 말한다. 이 연구의 목적은 TPH 10,000 mg/kg(액상 TPH 1,001 mg/L)으로 오염시킨 사질 포화대수층에 공기를 주입 하였을 때 불포화 토양층, 대기층에서 발생되는 이산화탄소, 휘발성유기화합물의 농도와 포화대수층(TPH) 농도 변화에 관한 특성 연구이다. 36일 동안 공기를 주입한 결과, 실험 반응조의 평형온도는 $24.9{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$이었다. 포화대수층(공기 확산기 근처 C10 지점)에 녹아있는 TPH 농도는 초기주입 농도의 66.0%가 제거되었다. 대기중(C70 지점)에서 측정된 $CO_2$ 질량은 3,800 mg이였고 불포화 토양층(C50 지점)에서 측정된 $CO_2$의 질량은 3,200 mg이였다. 대기중(C70 지점) 및 불포화 토양층(C50 지점)에서 생성된 VOCs 속도상수는 각각 0.164/day, 0.187/day이였다.

수치해석을 활용한 합판마루 바닥재의 VOCs 방출에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Numerical Analysis of VOCs Emission from Plywood Floor Material)

  • The floor material is known as the most influential emission source of the residential building, because most floor material is made of wood compound and adhesive like a plywood flooring. Moreover, floor heating system keeps the inside temperature of the material high. As the emission of hazardous chemical compound from the construction material is influenced by many factors, it is necessary to analyze the emission characteristics of the floor material to improve IAQ. In this study, numerical analysis is performed to investigate the emission characteristics of the floor material affected by several factors such as temperature, air exchange rate, initial concentration, and internal diffusion coefficient. A simulation program is also written based on the mass transfer theory. The simulation results show that there is some level of difference on the TVOC concentration when each of the factors is variable.

  • Recently, the risk of fine dust is emerging in Korea. According to the OECD report, the incidence of hospitalization and mortality from lung disease is increased, and the incidence of lung cancer and mortality from ischemic heart disease with prolonged exposure are increased. In addition, indoor air quality has become an important factor affecting the human body as indoor life has increased due to the Industrial Revolution. Air pollutants that cause indoor air deterioration typically include particulate dusts as described above, formaldehyde and VOCs released in gaseous form from adhesive wood products used in building materials and furniture. May cause breathing problems. In this study, we analyzed the properties of adsorption matrix for improving indoor air quality using cork.

폐가스 처리에 대한 바이오필터의 수학적 모델링 (Mathematical Modelling of Biofilter for Waste Air Biotreatment)

  • There have been many research efforts on biofilter modeling including Ottengraf et al. who derived a model equation for the concentration profile of pollutants(e.g., VOCs) in the biolayer and solved their outlet concentration of the waste gas stream through biofilter. However, for most of research works done so far, the effects to explain the effect of adsorption of organic particles to medium(i.e., adsorbent) have been ignored. In this work biofilter modeling accompanying process lumping has been proposed and the theoretical effect of adsorption property of the medium, on the biofilter performance of eliminating organic components in waste gas stream, is intensively discussed.

  • A new type of photocatalyst plasma air purification filter for decomposition of some VOCs has been developed. The photocatalyst plasma air purification filter employs the pulsed discharge plasma as an energy source of TiO2. photocatalyst instead of UV light. In closed room(2m3) test removal efficiency of some VOCs was 80∼100% in 15∼24 hours. In the initial step of phptocatalyst plasma reaction. Acetone and Nitromethane etc were detected. But they were completely oxidized to CO2 and H2O.

휘발성유기화합물(VOCs)의 측정방법에 따른 유물 전시관 내 농도 분포 특성 비교 (Comparison of VOCs Concentration Characteristic According to Measurement Methods in Exhibition Hall)

  • 이 연구에서는 유물 전시관을 대상으로 Active type과 Passive type에 의한 VOCs의 측정 분석법을 사용하여 전시실 내 외의 연중, 계절별 농도를 조사하고 측정방법에 따른 농도 비교를 통해 측정방법 간의 상관성을 비교하였다. 그 결과, Active type에 의한 전시실 TVOC의 연중 평균 농도는 $906.5{\mu}g/m^3$으로 대부분 조사 기간 동안 환경부 기준을 1.8배 이상 초과하였다. Active type에 의한 전시실의 ${\Sigma}VOCs$ 농도는 Passive type 보다 높았다. 일부 VOCs는 시간의 경과에 따라 감소하나 일시적인 상승 경향을 나타내기도 했다. Active type에 의한 전시관의 연평균 I/O비는 TVOC 9.0, ${\Sigma}VOCs$는 34.0으로 조사되어 ${\Sigma}VOCs$가 전시실 내부에서 다량 발생하는 것을 확인하였다. 두 방법 간의 상관성 분석 결과, ${\Sigma}VOCs$의 상관계수는 0.367이었으며 톨루엔은 0.567로 두 분석 방법 간의 연관성이 가장 큰 것으로 조사되었다.

건조목재의 모노테르펜 배출특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Monoterpene Emissions from Different Wood Species)

  • As the concerns about indoor air quality (IAQ) increase in recent years, lots of research works are under way to investigate the influence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from building products on the IAQ. One of the regulations for the IAQ is the level of total VOCs (TVOCs) from building products, assuming that the TVOCs are suspected to cause many health problems such as skin irritation, asthma, and allergy. However, the presence of biogenic VOCs, or natural VOCs (NVOCs) is believed to be beneficial to human health. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate chemical species and the NVOCs compositions of solid lumbers from different wood species. It was found that major VOC components were monoterpenes such as $\alpha$-pinene, $\beta$-pinene, d-limonene, camphene, $\alpha$-terpinene, $\gamma$-terpinene etc.

실내외 공기중 휘발성 유기화학물질(VOCs)의 농도조사에 관한 연구 (Measurements of Indoor and Outdoor Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) Concentrations in Ambient Air)

  • A pilot study was conducted in order to investigate the concentrations of indoor and outdoor VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) at ten homes and four building offices in Seoul during March-April, 1993. The five components of VOCs(Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, o-Xylene, m/p-Xylene) were collected using charcoal tube and were analysed using Gas Chromatography(GC) with a Flame Ionization Detector(FID). The mean concentations of indoor VOCs were shown as Benzene of 38.9 .mu.g/m$^{3}$. Toluene of 165.0 .mu.g/m$^{3}$, Ethylbenzene of 21.7 .mu.g/m$^{3}$, o-Xylene of 11.6 .mu.g/m$^{3}$ and m/p-Xylene of 29.3 .mu.g/m$^{3}$, but those corresponding that indoor levels of VOCs were higher than corresponding outdoor levels. The ratio of indoor and outdoor VOCs were higher than corresponding outdoor levels. The ratio of indoor and outdoor VOCs concentrations was 0.99 for Benzene, 1.23 for Toluene, 5.86 for Ethylbenzene, 5.23 for o-Xylene, 2.41 for m/p-Xylene in homes, while 2.02 for Benzene, 1.15 for Toulene, 0.96 for Ethylbenzene, 1.41 for o-Xylene, 1.38 for m/p-Xylene in offices, respectively. The mean concentrations of VOCs in homes were higher than those levels in offices, while the mean concentration of VOCs during active hour of occupants in a day were higher 1-3 times than the levels during non-active hour. Comparing VOCs levels by building's age, the mean concentrations of Benzene, o-Xylene and m/p-Xylene were higher in new building than old building, but the mean concentrations of Toluene and Etylbenzene in new building were lower than old building. The mean concentrations in all components of VOCs in smoking area were higher than non-smoking area. These results suggested that the VOC levels were affected by various indoor characteristics and behavioral activity of occupants.

  • Building materials emit high concentration volatile organic compounds(VOCs), formaldehyde(HCHO) and other hazardous air pollutants(HAPs) to indoor environment. Average value of VOCs and HCHO emission concentration were $3,770\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $430\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in newly buildings, respectively. VOCs and HCHO emission characteristic are high emission level at initial time and decreased in course of time.
