  • VLBI experiments have been conducted by radio telescopes in the East Asia VLBI Network (EAVN) in which 14 telescopes in China, Japan, and Korea participated. One of the aims of the EAVN is to obtain higher angular resolution that is provided by the 6,000 km baseline between China and Japan and better sensitivity by adding large telescopes. Data were recorded at 1 a Gbps recording rate at all stations and processed on the Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator (KJJVC) at the Korea-Japan Correlation Center (KJCC) after experiments. Fringes were obtained from these experiments conducted at 8 GHz and 22 GHz and post-correlation data analysis of the experiments is undergoing. The outcomes of these experiments open the possibility of conducting EAVN observations with global VLBI networks. In this presentation, the recent status of these experiments and future prospects are presented.

  • In this paper, we describe the installation of VLBI Correlation Subsystem (VCS) main product and its performance at the Korea-Japan Correlation Center (KJCC). The VCS main product was installed at KJCC in August 2009. For the overall performance evaluation of VCS, playbacks, Raw VLBI Data Buffer (RVDB) system, and Data Archive (DA) system were installed together. The VCS main product was connected between RVDB and DA, and the correlation results were put into the DA to confirm the normal operation of VCS 16 station mode configuration. The evaluation test was first performed with 4 station mode, same as the factory test of VCS main product. Based on the results of 4 station mode, the same evaluation test was conducted for 16 station mode of VCS. We found that the correlation results of VCS were almost similarly compared to those of the Mitaka FX Correlator. Through the test results, we confirmed that the problems such as spectrum errors, delay parameter processing module and field programmable gate array errors in antenna unit, which were generated at the factory test of VCS main product, were clearly solved. And we verified the performance and connectivity of VCS by obtaining the expected correlation results and we also confirmed that the performance of VCS was sufficient for real VLBI observation data in both 4 and 16 station modes.

  • In this paper, we developed new time information recording module of VSI (VLBI Standard Interface) format by analyzing the Mark5B recorder control and operation software with 1Gbps speed, which is able to record the weak signal of space radio source, through the Korean VLBI Network (KVN). The control and operation software of high-speed recorder consists of 2 kinds of software, which is that it can operate RAID control board by controlling large capacity HDD drive and the network control and operation. Especially, core software in high-speed recorder is able to output the results after performing and analyzing the input command. Through the analysis of control and operation software, new time information recording module, which is needed to process the observed data for correlation, is developed. New developed time information recording module can record the time information together after checking the interrupt of 1PPS(Pulse Per Second) input signal when the observed data will be recorded. To verify the normal operation of the developed time information recording module, we performed the real observation test and confirmed the effectiveness of developed software through analyzing the recorded observation data.

  • In this paper, we introduce the 1st performance evaluation of VLBI Correlation Subsystem (VCS) main product, which is core system of Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator (KJJVC). The main goal of the 1st performance evaluation of VCS main product is that the perfection of overall system will be enhanced after checking the unsolved part by performing the experiments towards various test items at the manufacturer before installation of field. The functional test was performed by including the overflow problem occurred in the FFT re-quantization module due to the insufficient of effective bit at the VCS trial product in this performance test of VCS main product. Through the performance test for VCS main product in the factory, the problem such as FFT re-quantization discovered at performance test of VCS trial product in 2008 was clearly solved and the important functions such as delay tracking, daly compensation, and frequency bining were added in this VCS main product. We also confirmed that the predicted correlation results (fringe) was obtained in the correlation test by using real astronomical observed data(wideband/narrow band).

  • Korean Peninsula has been postulated to be on the Eurasian plate(EU). On the other hand, recent seismological works and GPS researches suggest that it is on a separate plate called the Amurian plate (AM). However, the GPS results we inconsistent with each other beyond the estimated statistical errors. Moreover, the estimated plate motion parameter, which we obtained from the velocity data of six Korean GPS stations, was not well agreeing with any existing results. Therefore, independent measurements are required to distinguish those results. In near future, we will have 4 VLBI stations in Korea. This compact Korean VLBI array is capable of achieving good determination of the plate motion parameters if it is located on stable sites. We estimated the precision of the AM motion parameters with the Korean VLBT array. The results showed that the Korean VLBI array would verify the existence of the AM, as far as the observation precision of 0.2-0.5mm/yr for station velocities is achieved. Therefore, new Korean geodetic VLBI array can contribute to crustal deformation studies in East Asia.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the basic test results of the 32 Gbps observational equipment introduced as the back-end system for the wideband VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) observation of KVN (Korean VLBI Network). Radio astronomers want to make a large radio telescope that has excellent performance in order to observe the superfine structure of a celestial body, but a lot of money is needed. Therefore, in order to increase the sensitivity, the performance improvement of the receiving system and the method of observing the wide frequency bandwidth are introduced. To do this, we adopted a wideband sampling method for converting analog signals to digital with ultra-fast speeds and a wideband sampler for performing digital filtering in order to observe a wide observational frequency bandwidth. The wideband sampler (OCTAD-K) supports up to 16 Gsps-2bits sampling and supports a variety of observational bandwidth using digital filtering techniques. In particular, it is designed to support KVN's 4-frequency simultaneous observation system and VERA(VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry)'s 2-beam observation system. It can also support polKVN(Korean VLBI Network), KaVA(KVN and VERA Array), 32Gbps Direct Sampler, Digital Filter, Widebandarization observations and supports the standard VDIF(VLBI Data Interchange Format) format of observed data. In this paper, the performance of the system and the problem solving are described in detail after performing the factory inspection and field test before the system is introduced.

  • In this paper, we describe the radio astronomical data processing system implementation using Mark5B and its development. KASI(Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) is constructing the KVN (Korean VLBI Network) until the end of 2007, which is the first VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometery) facility in Korea and dedicated for the mm-wave VLBI observation. KVN will adopt the DAS (Data Acquisition System) consisting of digital filter with various function and 1Gsps high-speed sampler to digitize the radio astronomical data for analyzing on the digital filter system. And the analyzed data will be recorded to recorder up to 1Gbps data rates. To test this, we have implemented the system which is able to process 1Gbps data rates and carried out the data recording experiment.

  • In this paper, we introduce the development of the large storage system in order to record the observed space radio signal in the Korean VLBI Network(KVN) with high-speed. The KVN is the Very Long Baseline Interferometery(VLBI) to observe the birth of star, the structure of space by constructing radio telescope with diameter 21m at the Seoul, Ulsan, Jeju from 2001 to 2007 years. To do this, Korea Astronomy Observatory joined the international consortium for developing the high-speed large storage system(Mark 5), which is developed by MIT Haystack observatory. The Mark 5 system based on hard disk has to record up to 1 Gbps the observed space radio signal. The main features of Mark 5 system are as follows; First it is able to directly record the input data to the hard disk without PC1(Peripheral Component Interconnect) internal bus, and the second, it has two hard disk banks, which are able to hot-swap ATA/IDE type very cheap up to 1 Gbps recording and playback. The third is that it follows the international VLBI standard interface hardware(VSI-H). Therefore it can be connect directly the VSI-H type system at the input/output. Finally it also supports e- VLBI(Electronic-VLBI) through the standard Gigabits Ethernet connection.
