  • This paper presents an Integer-N phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer using a novel prescaler based on a charge pump and clock triggering circuit. A quadrature VCO has been designed for the 900MHz UHF RFID application. In this circuit, a voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO), a novel Prescaler, phase frequency detector(PFD), charge pump(CP), and analog lock detector(ALD) have been integrated with 0.35-${\mu}m$CMOS process. The integer divider has been developed with a verilog-HDL module, and the PLL mixed mode simulation has been performed with Spectre-Verilog co-simulator. The sweep range of VCO is designed from 828 to 960 MHz and the VCO generates four phase quadrature signals. The simulation results show that the phase noise of VCO is -102dBc/Hz at 100 KHz offset frequency, and the maximum lock-in time is about 4us with 32MHz step change (from 896 to 928 MHz).

  • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the microstrip square open loop split ring resonator (OLSRR) is presented for reducing the phase noise. For this purpose, the square-shaped split ring resonator (SRR) haying the form of the microstrip square open loop is investigated. Compared with the microstrip square open loop resonator, the microstrip square OLSRR has the larger coupling coefficient value, which makes a higher Q value, and has reduced the phase noise of VCO. The VCO with 1.7V power supply has the phase noise of $-120\sim-116.5$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, $5.746\sim5.854$ GHz. The figure of merit (FOM) of this VCO is $-200.33\sim-197$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the same tuning range.

  • This paper describes measurement of an on-ship power supply noise in mixed-signal integrated circuits. To measure the on-chip power supply noise, we can check the effects of analog circuits and compensate it. This circuit consists of two independent measurement channels, each consisting of a sample and hold circuit and a frequency to digital converter which has a buffer and voltage controlled oscillator(VCO). The time-based voltage information and frequency-based power spectrum density(PSD) can be achieved by a simple analog to digital conversion scheme. The buffer works like a unit-gain buffer with a wide bandwidth and VCO has a high gain to improve resolution. This circuit was fabricated in a 0.18um CMOS technology and has 2.06mV/count. The noise measurement circuit consumes 15mW and occupies $0.768mm^2$.

  • This paper presents a low-power, wide tuning range VCO with automatic two-step negative-Gm calibration loop to compensate for the process, voltage and temperature variation. To cover the wide tuning range, digital automatic negative-Gm tuning loop and analog automatic amplitude calibration loop are used. Adaptive body biasing (ABB) technique is also adopted to minimize the power consumption by lowering the threshold voltage of transistors in the negative-Gm core. The power consumption is 2 mA to 6mA from a 1.2 V supply. The VCO tuning range is 2.65 GHz, from 2.35 GHz to 5 GHz. And the phase noise is -117 dBc/Hz at the 1 MHz offset when the center frequency is 3.2 GHz.

  • A spread spectrum clock generation is an efficient way to reduce electro-magnetic interference (EMI) radiation in modern mixed signal chip systems. The proposed circuit generates the spread spectrum clock by directly injecting the modulation voltage into the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) current source for SATA II. The resulting 33KHz modulation profile has a Hersey-Kiss shape with a rounded peak. The chip has been fabricated using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process and test results show that the proposed circuit achieves 0.509% (5090ppm) down spreading at 1.5GHz and peak power reduction of 10dB. The active chip area is 0.36mm ${\times}$ 0.49mm and the chip consumes 30mW power at 1.5GHz.

  • In this paper, the temperature characteristics of full CMOS FLL(frequency locked loop) re analyzed. The FLL circuit is used to generate an output signal that tracks an input efference signal. The locking time of FLL is short compared to PLL(phase locked loop) circuit because the output signal of FLL is synchronized only in frequency. Also the FLL s designed to allow the circuit to be fully integrated. The FLL circuit is composed two VCs, two buffers, a VCO and two frequency dividers. The temperature variation of frequency divider, FVC and buffer cancelled because the circuit structure. is the same and he temperature effect is cancelled by the comparator. Simulation results are shown to illustrate the performance of the designed FLL circuit with temperature.

  • The DTV (Digital TV) tuner for an 8-VSB (Vestigial Side-Band) modulation was developed to meet the requirements of the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee). The double frequency conversion and the active tracking filter in the front-end were used to cancel interferences between adjacent channels and multi-channels by suppressing the IF beat and the Image frequency. However, It was impossible to get frequency mapping between the tracking filter and the first VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) in the existing DTV tuner structure which differs from the NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) tuner. This paper, therefore, suggests an assailable structure and a new method for the automatic frequency selection by mapping the frequency characteristics over the tracking voltage and the combined HW which is composed of a Micro-controller, an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory), a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter), an OP amplifier, and a switch driver.

  • In this paper, phase noise analysis result for 2.4 GHz PLL(phase locked loop) using SPD(sample phase detector) is proposed. It can be used for high performance frequency synthesizer's LO(local oscillator) to extend output frequency range or for LO of offset PLL to reduce a division rate or for clock signal of DDS(direct digital synthesizer). Before manufacturing, theoretical estimation of PLL's phase noise performance should be performed. In order to calculate phase noise of PLL using SPD, Leeson model is used for modeling phase noise of VCO(voltage controlled oscillator) and OCXO(ovened crystal oscillator). After theoretically analyzing phase noise of PLL, optimized loop filter bandwidth was determined. And then, phase noise of designed loop filter was calculated to find suitable OP-Amp. Also, the calculated result of phase noise was compared with the measured one. The measured phase noise of PLL was -130 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz.

  • This paper reports a fractional-N phase-locked-loop(PLL) frequency synthesizer that is implemented in a $0.35-{\mu}m$ standard CMOS process and generates a quadrature signal for an FRS terminal. The synthesizer consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO), a charge pump(CP), loop filter(LF), a phase frequency detector(PFD), and a frequency divider. The VCO has been designed with an LC resonant circuit to provide better phase noise and power characteristics, and the CP is designed to be able to adjust the pumping current according to the PFD output. The frequency divider has been designed by a 16-divider pre-scaler and fractional-N divider based on the third delta-sigma modulator($3^{rd}$ DSM). The LF is a third-order RC filter. The measured results show that the proposed device has a dynamic frequency range of 460~510 MHz and -3.86 dBm radio-frequency output power. The phase noise of the output signal is -94.8 dBc/Hz, and the lock-in time is $300{\mu}s$.
