In object analysis by image processing, finding lines plays a universal role. And these lines can be easily found by detecting ridges and valleys in digital gray scale images. In this paper, a new method of detecting ridges and valleys by using local min/max operations was presented. This method detects ridges and valleys of desired width by using erosion and dilation properties of local min/max operations, and requires no information of ridge or valley direction. Therefore the method is efficient and computationally simple in comparision with the conventional analytical method.
Since the 1980s, the changes in production, style and paradigm have made it possible to establish many venture valleys throughout the world. This paper attempts to compare the characteristics of the venture valleys in Japan and U.S., by analyzing its entrepreneurship, main group, linkage to industry, industrial support system, political society, and its culture.
The Hall factor in a quantum well structure with X or L-type indirect conduction valleys is calculated for various strain conditions. The two-dimensional constant energy surfaces of occupied valleys are proven to be identical. As a result, the Hall factor depends on the relative direction of occupied valleys to the growth direction, regardless of the number of occupied valleys. This work is widely applicable to the two-dimensional structure with indirect conduction minima for any growth direction and under different strain conditions.
There are lots of depression forms and closed small hollows in the Karst landforms. For example, doline, uvalas, corrosion plains are belong to this case. In Karst surface it can be find that the gorges, meander caves, natural bridges, blind valleys, steepheads and dry valleys are well known landforms.
Vegetational changes along elevational and topographical gradients were studied in Mt. Jumbong which is located at the core area of the Mt. Sorak Biosphere Reserve in Kangwon-do Province in central Korea. Two 500 m north-south transects crossing two valleys and a small ridge were laid out, and fifty-one 10 m$\times$10 m permanent quadrats were systematically set up. All trees bigger than 2.5 cm DBH were marked with numbered aluminum tags, and their DBH measured and the species identified. Coverage of plant species in the herb layer were determined in two 2 m $\times$ 2 m subquadrats in each of the permanent quadrats. Thirty-two species of woody plants occurred in the tree layer in the permanent quadrats studied. Quercus mongolica was the dominant species across the study site, and Acer pseudosieboldianum and Carpinus cordata were also important. Quercus mongolica occurred on the ridges and south-facing slopes, and Acer pseudosieboldianum occurred extensively except for valleys. In contrast, Fraxinus mandshurica, Acer mono, Acer triflorum, and Ulmus laciniata were common in valleys. At the herbaceous layer, 112 species were identified. Dominant species were Ainsliaea acerifolia and Sasa borealis on the ridges, Meehania urticifolia on north-facing slopes, and Deutzia glabrata on valleys. Soil environmental factors were compared among the quadrats. pH was lower in the quadrats located on ridges and south-facing slopes, and organic matter was lowest on south-facing slopes. Quadrats located on valleys were generally higher in pH, organic matter, N, P, K, Ca and Mg. DCA ordinations for tree layer and herb layer were carried out in order to identify the dominant environmental factors affecting the distribution of plant species along the environmental gradients. Correlation analysis between ordination axis scores and environmental factors showed that axis one was negatively correlated with elevation and positively correlated with soil organic matter, pH, Ca, Mg, and P, but that axis two was positively correlated with elevation. These results indicate that vegetation responds very sensitively to elevational and topographical gradients although the study area is relatively small with about 100 m in elevational variation.
The Hall factor in a two-dimensional device with indirect conduction valleys is calculated for several growth on various strain conditions. In the [001] or [111] growth direction, the two-dimensional constant energy surfaces of occupied valleys are shown to be isotropically distributed. However, in the [110] growth direction, the distribution of occupied valleys on the plane is not isotropic. This fact is the reason for the anisotropic Hall factor on the sample plane.
We show that valleys, high peaks, and modular ascents are statistics of Fuss-Catalan paths having a distribution given by the Fuss-Narayana number. We prove the results using the Cycle Lemma and provide bijections among them. We also show that relative peaks are independent of the base path. In particular, valleys and high peaks can be obtained from relative peaks by fixing the base path in certain ways.
