Inhibitory Effects of Ethanol Extract of Rhodiola Sacra on Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Neuro-2A Cells (설치류 Neuro-2A 신경세포에서 홍경천 에탄올 추출물의 소포체 스트레스 억제효과)

  • Growing evidence suggests that mediating apoptotic cell death of ER stress plays an important role in pathological development of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease. The ethanol extract of Rodiola sacra (ERS) investigates whether ER stress protects neuroinvasive neuro-2A cells from homocysteine (Hcy) cell death and ER stress. In neuronal cells, Hcy markedly decreased the viability of the cells and induced the death of Annexin V-positive cells as confirmed by MTT assay. The Hcy cell viability and apoptotic loss pretreated with ERS were attenuated, and Hcy showed stress in the expression of C / EBP homologous protein, 78-kDa glucose regulatory protein and the junction of X-box binding protein-1 (xbp1) mRNA. ESR decreased Hcy-induced mRNA binding, GRP78 and CHOP cells induced Hcy-induced ER stress and apoptosis, and Western blotting revealed expression of heme oxygenase-1 and HO-1 enzyme activity Inhibition is indicative of therapeutic value for neurodegenerative diseases such as decreased cell death by hemin.

Low-complexity Local Illuminance Compensation for Bi-prediction mode (양방향 예측 모드를 위한 저복잡도 LIC 방법 연구)

  • This paper proposes a method for reducing the complexity of LIC (Local Illuminance Compensation) for bi-directional inter prediction. The LIC performs local illumination compensation using neighboring reconstruction samples of the current block and the reference block to improve the accuracy of the inter prediction. Since the weight and offset required for local illumination compensation are calculated at both sides of the encoder and decoder using the reconstructed samples, there is an advantage that the coding efficiency is improved without signaling any information. Since the weight and the offset are obtained in the encoding prediction step and the decoding step, encoder and decoder complexity are increased. This paper proposes two methods for low complexity LIC. The first method is a method of applying illumination compensation with offset only in bi-directional prediction, and the second is a method of applying LIC after weighted average step of reference block obtained by bidirectional prediction. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, BD-rate is compared with BMS-2.0.1 using B, C, and D classes of MPEG standard experimental image under RA (Random Access) condition. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the average of 0.29%, 0.23%, 0.04% for Y, U, and V in terms of BD-rate performance compared to BMS-2.0.1 and encoding/decoding time is almost same. Although the BD-rate was lost, the calculation complexity of the LIC was greatly reduced as the multiplication operation was removed and the addition operation was halved in the LIC parameter derivation process.

Cardiac Phenotyping of SARS-CoV-2 in British Columbia: A Prospective Echo Study With Strain Imaging

  • BACKGROUND: There is limited data on the residual echocardiographic findings including strain analysis among post-coronavirus disease (COVID) patients. The aim of our study is to prospectively phenotype post-COVID patients. METHODS: All patients discharged following acute COVID infection were systematically followed in the post-COVID-19 Recovery Clinic at Vancouver General Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital. At 4-18 weeks post diagnosis, patients underwent comprehensive echocardiographic assessment. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was assessed by 3D, 2D Biplane Simpson's, or visual estimate. LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) was measured using a vendor-independent 2D speckle-tracking software (TomTec). RESULTS: A total of 127 patients (53% female, mean age 58 years) were included in our analyses. At baseline, cardiac conditions were present in 58% of the patients (15% coronary artery disease, 4% heart failure, 44% hypertension, 10% atrial fibrillation) while the remainder were free of cardiac conditions. COVID-19 serious complications were present in 79% of the patients (76% pneumonia, 37% intensive care unit admission, 21% intubation, 1% myocarditis). Normal LVEF was seen in 96% of the cohort and 97% had normal right ventricular systolic function. A high proportion (53%) had abnormal LV GLS defined as < 18%. Average LV GLS of septal and inferior segments were lower compared to that of other segments. Among patients without pre-existing cardiac conditions, LVEF was abnormal in only 1.9%, but LV GLS was abnormal in 46% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: Most post-COVID patients had normal LVEF at 4-18 weeks post diagnosis, but over half had abnormal LV GLS.

Diurnal Changes of Leaf Water Potential in Cuttings (삽수(挿穗)의 Leaf Water Potential의 변화(變化))

  • The diurnal pattern of leaf water potential in cuttings by Dye Method was as follows: 1. Diurnal pattern of leaf water potential (${\psi}_l$) in Viburnum Awabuki K. Koch and Daphne odora Thunb. was shown the pattern of the curves without mutual relation with soil classes when soil water potential (${\psi}_s$) was 0 bar. When ${\psi}_s$ was above -0.01 bar, the cuttings in the loamy sand (L.S.) was shown by the maximum values than that in sandy clay (S.C.) by about -1 bar gap (Fig. 1). 2. The diurnal changes of ${\psi}_l$ was shown the most high from two to eight O'clock in the morning, the maximum value was -3 bars when ${\psi}_s$ was above -0.01 to -0.02 bar, and was -4 bars below -0.03 bar. The diurnal the lowest values of ${\psi}_l$ showed -20 to -22 bars from one to two O'clock in the afternoon. In the fifteenth day after cutting V.A., the staying time in the diurnal maximum values of ${\psi}_l$ is about half in comparison with it in the fifth day. The curves of recovery of water stress (Fig. 1), the former reached to the diurnal maximum values -1 to -2 bars lately every hours comparing with it of the latter. The general diurnal pattern of ${\psi}_l$ was most clearly related to change with air temperature and the relative humitidy. 3. Comparing the treatment block by IAA 50 ppm with controlled block in fifteenth day after V.A. cuttings, in case of treatment reached to maximum values -2 to -3 bars lately as shown Fig. 2., and also staying times was only half in comparison with controlled block. 4. The cuttings 4 leafs was much rootings than 2 leafs in V.A. (Table. 1), and the former reached maximum value -2 to -3 bars lately every hours comparing with the latter. 5. In case of Buxus microphylla var. Koreana as shown Fig. 3., comparing the pattern curves of in the cuttings 8 leafs with 4 leafs, the former reached to maximum values -2 to -3 bars lately in comparison with the latter, but reffering to the amount of rooting (Table. 2), the former is less than the latter.

Characterization of a Lichenase Isolated from Soil Metagenome

  • A lichenase gene (mt-lic) was identified for the first time through function-based screening of a soil metagenomic library. Its deduced amino acid sequence exhibited a high degree of homology with endo-${\beta}$-1,3-1,4-glucanase (having both lichenase and chitosanase activities), encoded by the bgc gene of Bacillus circulans WL-12. The recombinant lichenase overexpressed and purified from Escherichia coli was able to efficiently hydrolyze both barley ${\beta}$-glucan and lichenan. The enzyme showed maximal activity at a pH of 6.0 at $50^{\circ}C$, with Azo-barley-glucan as the substrate. The metal ions $Mn^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}$ enhanced the enzymatic activity, whereas the $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ ions inhibited the enzymatic activity. The $K_m$ and $V_{max}$ values of the purified lichenase were determined to be 0.45 mg/ml and 24.83 U/min/mg of protein, respectively.

  • A 2.2-inch QCIF+(176${\times}$RGB${\times}$220) TFT-LCD with integrated row driver was developed using a standard amorphous silicon TFT technology. At low temperature, the integrated row driver operation is dramatically effected by the electron drift mobility reduction(■50 %) and the threshold voltage shift (■1V) of the a-Si TFT. We studied the dependency of circuit design and found that higher on-current circuit is important to guarantee good operation in wide temperature range.

Etching Characteristics of Au Thin Films using Inductively Coupled CF4 / Cl2 / Ar Plasma

  • The etching of Au thin films has been performed in an inductively coupled $CF_4 / Cl_2 / Ar$ plasma. The etch properties including etch rate and selectivity were examined as $CF_4$ content adds from o to $30\%$ to $Cl_2/Ar$ plasma. The $Cl_2/(Cl_2 + Ar)$ gas mixing ratio was fixed at $20\%$. Other parameters were fixed at an rf power of 700 W, a dc bias voltage of -150 V, a chamber pressure of 15 mTorr, and a substrate temperature of $30^{\circ}C$. The highest etch rate of the Au thin film was 370 nm/min at a $10\%$ additive $CF_4$ into $Cl_2/Ar$ gas mixture. The surface reaction of the etched Au thin films was investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The XPS analysis shows that the intensities of Ail peaks are changed, indicating that there is a chemical reaction between Cl and Au. Au-Cl is hard to remove on the surface because of its high melting point. However, etching products can be sputtered by Ar ion bombardment.

Evaluation of power density in microbial fuel cells using expanded graphite/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite cathode and CNT anode (팽창흑연·소나노튜브 복합 음극과 탄소나노튜브 양극으로 이루어진 미생물 연료전지의 전력수율 평가)

  • Electrochemical redox capacity of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) electrode is an important factor in the power density. This study was conducted to investigate the redox capacity of surface modified anode and cathode electrodes by measuring their conductivities. An anode electrode was modified with nitric acid and a cathode electrode was modified with heat treatment. The anode electrode modified with 20 % of the nitric acid concentration showed the highest conductivity of $6.2{\mu}S/cm/g$ and the maximum power density of $306.0mW/m^2$ when used in a MFC. The cathode electrode modified at $472^{\circ}C$ for 18 min showed the highest conductivity of $5.2{\mu}S/cm/g$ and the maximum power density of $276.20mW/m^2$ when used in a MFC. On the other hand, an MFC using both the electrodes showed the highest maximum power density of $408.2mW/m^2$. Meanwhile, a control MFC without modified electrodes generated very small voltage (0.014 mV), so the power density could not be measured.

  • HVPE(hydride vapor phase epitaxy)법으로 (111)MgAI$_{2}$ $O_{4}$기판위에 GaN 후막을 성장하였다. GaN를 성장하기 전에 기판에 표면을 GaCI로 처리한 수 성장하였을 때 이중 X선 회절 피크의 반치폭이 710 arcsec로서 N $H_{3}$로 처리한 후 성장한 GaN에 비하여 작았으며, 무색 투명의 경면상태가 얻어\ulcorner다. 113$0^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 성장한 GaN 의 광루미네센스(PL)특성과 동일하게 나타났다. 10K의 온도에서 측정된 PL 스펙트럼은 자유여기자와 속박여기자의 재결합천이에 의한 피크들과 Mg과 관련된 도너-억셉터 쌍 사이의 재결합 및 이의 1LO, 2LO, 3LO 및 4 LO 포논복제에 의한 피크들이 나타났다. 성장된 GaN는 n형의 전도성을나타내었으며, 캐리어 이동도와 농도는 각각 21.3$\textrm{cm}^2$/V ㆍsec와 4.2 x $10^{18}$$cm^{-3}$이었다.

Anodization of $TiO_2$ with Seawater Electrolyte; Evaluation of Hydrogen Production in PEG and Photocatalytic Cr(VI) Reduction (해수전해질을 이용한 양극산화 $TiO_2$ 제조; 광전기화학적 수소제조 및 Cr(VI) 환원처리 연구)

  • The present works were performed that titanium foil was anodized in various dilution ratios of seawater and distilled water with 10V external voltage applied, then annealed at $450^{\circ}C$ to obtain $TiO_2$ on the Ti substrate. The prepared samples were characterized by instruments (XRD, SEM, and photocurrent) and used to investigate rate of hydrogen production in photoelectrochemical cell as well as Cr(VI) reduction. As the results of experiments, the anodized $TiO_2$ in seawater electrolytes, which are ranged from 15 to 50 times dilution of seawater, was showed a relatively higher hydrogen production (ca. 97~110 umol/hr-$cm^2$) and Cr(VI) reduction (ca. 95% reduction).
