Channel Electrode Voltammetric and In Situ Electrochemical ESR Studies of Comproportionation of Methyl Viologen in Acetonitrile

  • Two redox processes of methyl viologen (+2/+, +/0) in acetonitrile were investigated by using channel electrode voltammetric and in situ electrochemical ESR methods. Two separated unequal plateau currents of the first (+2/+) and second (+/0) redox processes of the viologen were observed in the channel electrode voltammograms and showed a cube-root depedndence on the electrolyte flow rate, respectively. The simple Levich analysis resulted in two different diffusion coefficients of $D_{+2}=2.2{\times}10^{-5}\;cm^2/s$ and $D_+=3.0{\times}10^{-5}cm^2/s$ from the limiting currents. In situ electrochemical ESR studies were performed for the monocation radicals generated at the potentials of the two plateau currents in the electrolyte flow range $1.3{\times}10^{-1}{\geq}v_f{\geq}2.7{\times}10^{-3}\;cm^3/s$. Backward implicitfinite difference method was employed to simulate the electrochemical kinetic problem of two sequential electron transfers ($MV^{+2}+e{\leftrightarrows}MV^+,\;MV^{+}+e{\leftrightarrows}MV^0$) coupled with reversible comproportionation ($MV^{2+}+MV^0{{\leftrightarrows}^{k_f}_{k_b}}2MV^+$). $k_f$ was found to be greater than ($10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}.

TRAO Multi-beam Legacy Survey of Nearby Filamentary Molecular Clouds : Progress Report

  • To dynamically and chemically understand how filaments, dense cores, and stars form under different environments, we are conducting a systematic mapping survey of nearby molecular clouds using the TRAO 14 m telescope with high ($N_2H^+$ 1-0, $HCO^+$ 1-0, SO 32-21, and $NH_2D$ v=1-0) and low ($^{13}CO$ 1-0, $C^{18}O$ 1-0) density tracers. The goals of this survey are to obtain the velocity distribution of low dense filaments and their dense cores for the study of their origin of the formation, to understand whether the dense cores form from any radial accretion or inward motions toward dense cores from their surrounding filaments, and to study the chemical differentiation of the filaments and the dense cores. Until Feb. 2017, the real OTF observation time is 460 hours. We have almost completed mapping observation with four molecular lines ($^{13}CO$ 1-0, $C^{18}O$ 1-0, $N_2H^+$ 1-0, and $HCO^+$ 1-0) on the five regions of molecular clouds (L1251 of Cepheus, Perseus west, Polaris south, BISTRO region of Serpense, California, and Orion B). The maps of a total area of $7.38deg^2$ for both $^{13}CO$ and $C^{18}O$ lines and $2.19deg^2$ for both $N_2H^+$ and $HCO^+$ lines were obtained. All OTF data were regridded to a cell size of 22 by 22 arcseconds. The $^{13}CO$ and $C^{18}O$ data show the RMS noise level of about 0.22 K and $N_2H^+$ and $HCO^+$ data show about 0.14 K at the velocity resolution of 0.06 km/s. Additional observations will be made on some regions that have not reached the noise level for analysis. We are refining the process for a massive amount of data and the data reduction and analysis are underway. This presentation introduces the overall progress from observations to data processing and the initial analysis results to date.

Effects of the Ge Prearmophization Ion Implantation on Titanium Salicide Junctions (게르마늄 Prearmophization 이온주입을 이용한 티타늄 salicide 접합부 특성 개선)

  • We studied the effects of Ge preamorphization (PAM) on 0.25$\mu\textrm{m}$ Ti-salicide junctions using comparative study with As PAM. For each PAM schemes, ion implantations are performed at a dose of 2E14 ion/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and at 20keV energy using $^{75}$ /As+and GeF4 ion sources. Ge PAM showed better sheet resistance and within- wafer uniformity than those of As PAM at 0.257m line width of n +/p-well junctions. This attributes to enhanced C54-silicidation reaction and strong (040) preferred orientation of the C54-silicide due to minimized As presence at n+ junctions. At p+ junctions, comparable performance was obtained in Rs reduction at fine lines from both As and Ge PAM schemes. Junction leakage current (JLC) revels are below ~1E-14 A/$\mu\textrm{m}^{2}$ at area patterns for all process conditions, whereas no degradation in JLC is shown under Ge PAM condition even at edge- intensive patterns. Smooth $TiSi_2$ interface is observed by cross- section TEM (X- TEM), which supports minimized silicide agglomeration due to Ge PAM and low level of JLC. Both junction break- down voltage (JBV) and contact resistances are satisfactory at all process conditions.

Microbiological Characteristics of the Unrecorded Wild Yeasts from Jeju Island and Jangsado in Southern Coast, Korea (제주도와 남해 장사도 해변 등으로부터 분리, 선별된 국내 미기록 야생효모들의 균학적 특성)

  • The present study aimed to screen unrecorded wild yeasts from Jeju lsland and Jangsado on the southern coast of Korea, and to investigate their microbiological characteristics. To date, Coniozyma leucospermi JJD37-2, Hanseniaspora thailandica JJD44-1, Kluyveromyces nonfermentans JJD15-1, Kockovaella fuzhouensis JJD47-3, Vishniacozyma heimaeyensis JJD8-4, Candida carpophila JSDH24-1, Wickerhamomyces strasburgensis JSDH34-2, Candida savonica HJD6-4, and Candida karawaiewii YP23-3 have not been previously recorded in Korea. In the present study, we investigated the microbiological characteristics of these previously unrecorded yeasts. Except for W. strasburgensis JSDH34-2 strain, none of the strains formed spores, and only the C. leucospermi JJD37-2 strain formed pseudomycelia. Almost all strains grew well in yeast extract-peptone-dextrose (YPD) medium, potato dextrose (PD) medium and yeast extract-malt extract (YM) media. C. carpophila JSDH24-1 and W. strasburgensis JSDH34-2 also grew well in YPD medium containing 10% NaCl. H. thailandica JJD44-1 is fermented to produce glucose, fructose and mannose.

Study on Phase Relation and Synthesis of Pyrochlore in the System of Ca-Ce-Zr-Ti-O (Ca-Ce-Zr-Ti-O System에서의 파이로클로어 합성 및 상관계에 대한 연구)

  • Pyrochlore is known as one of the most promising materials for the immobilization of radionuclide in high level waste. This study included the synthesis, phase relation and characteristics of $pyrochlore(CaCeZr_xTi_{2-x}O_{7,\;x=0.2\~2.0)$ in the system of Ca-Ce-Zr-Ti-O. Using the CPS(Cold pressing and sintering) method, the mixtures of $CaCO3_,\;CeO_2,\;ZrO_2\;and\;TiO_2$ oxides were pressed, and sintered at $1100\~1600^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours. The optimal synthetic conditions at various compositions were differed from 1300 to $1600^{\circ}C$ Even in the optimal temperatures, pyrochlore or fluorite coexisted with minor amount of perovskite, $CeO_2\;or\;Ce_{0.75}Zr_{0.25}O_2$. It was confirmed that pyrochlore and fluorite structures were stable at $x\leq0.6\;and\;x\geq1.0$, respectively. Especially, the compositions of pyrochlore or fluorite showed non-stoichiometric compositions in that contents of Ca and Ti were more deficient and those of Zr and Ce were more excess than batch compositions with the increase of x value. These characteristics stemmed from the behavior of elements occupied at eight- and six-coordinated site, and then caused the coexistence of perovskite, $CeO_2\;or\;Ce_{0.75}Zr_{0.25}O_2$ along with pyrochlore or fluorite.

Purification and Characterization of a Thermostable Protease from Pseudomonas aeruginosa NS-83

  • A bacterial strain NS-83 isolated from soil was able to produce an extracellular thermostable protease. The strain was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on its morphological and physiological characteristics. A thermostable protease from this strain has been purified to homogeneity as judged by SDS-PAGE and isoelectric focusing. The purification procedures included hydrophobic interaction, ion exchange, and gel filtration chromatography. The $M_r$ and the pl of the enzyme were 32,000 and 5.9, respectively. The optimal pH at 55$^{\circ}C$ and the optimal temperature at pH 7.0 were 8.0 and 60$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The D-values of the enzyme at 60, 65, and 70$^{\circ}C$ were 22, 2.1, and 0.75 hrs, respectively. The enzyme activity was significantly inhibited in the presence of 1 mM o-phenanthroline or EDTA, suggesting that the enzyme is metalloprotease. The $K_m$, and $V_{max}$ for Hammarsten casein were found to be 3.2 mg/ml and 0.918 unit/ml, respectively. These enzymatic properties were similar to those of elastase produced from P. aeruginosa IFO 3455, but the enzyme was clearly different from the reported elastase, in respect to $Ca^{++}$ effects on enzyme-thermostability. This property, together with amino acid composition analysis, confirmed that the enzyme differs from the known P. aeruginosa elastase.

Characterization of mandibular molar root and canal morphology using cone beam computed tomography and its variability in Belgian and Chilean population samples

  • Purpose: This study used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to characterize mandibular molar root and canal morphology and its variability in Belgian and Chilean population samples. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the CBCT images of 515 mandibular molars (257 from Belgium and 258 from Chile). Molars meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed to determine (1) the number of roots; (2) the root canal configuration; (3) the presence of a curved canal in the cross-sectional image of the distal root in the mandibular first molar and (4) the presence of a C-shaped canal in the second mandibular molar. A descriptive analysis was performed. The association between national origin and the presence of a curved or C-shaped canal was evaluated using the chi-squared test. Results: The most common configurations in the mesial root of both molars were type V and type III. In the distal root, type I canal configuration was the most common. Curvature in the cross-sectional image was found in 25% of the distal canals of the mandibular first molars in the Belgian population, compared to 11% in the Chilean population. The prevalence of C-shaped canals was 10% or less in both populations. Conclusion: In cases of unclear or complex root and canal morphology in the mandibular molars, CBCT imaging might assist endodontic specialists in making an accurate diagnosis and in treatment planning.

Electro-Optical Characteristics of CdS : In Films Grown by Hot-Wall Evaporation and Its Application (HWE에 의하여 성장된 CdS : In 박막의 전기광학적 특성과 그 응용)

  • HWE(Hot-Wall Epitaxy) 방법에 의하여 pyrex 유리기판 위에 CdS 다결정 박막을 성장하였다. X-선 회절실험 결과 CdS 박막은 육방정이었는데 (0002)면보다 91013)면이 강 하게 성장됨을 알 수 있었다. 전자현미경으로 표면을 분석한 결과 입자의 크기는 기판의 온 도가 48$0^{\circ}C$, 증발원의 온도가 $610^{\circ}C$일 때 1~1.5$mu extrm{m}$로서 가장 컸다. 박막의 표면저항은 4-point probe로서 측정한 결과 10-8$\Omega$/\ulcorner이상이었다. 성장된 CdS 다결정 박막의 photoluminesence을 20K에서 측정하였는데 bound exciton, donor acceptor pair에 의한 발광이 관측되었다. Spectral response의 peak는 505nm이었다. CdS 다결정 박막의 표면 저항을 줄이기 위하여 여러 가지 온도에서 Indium을 확산시켰다. 그 결과 표면저항은 ~ $\times$ 101에서 ~ $\times$ 103$\Omega$/\ulcorner 정도 감소되었다. 50$0^{\circ}C$에 In을 1시간 확산시켰을 때 표면저항은 1300$\Omega$/\ulcorner이었다. 이 때 CdS : In의 운반자 농도는 1.2 $\times$ 1018cm-3, 이동도는 1.8cm-2/V-sec, 비저항은 1.3 $\times$ 10-2$\Omega$-cm이었다. CdS : In의 photoluminescence는 20K 에서 Gaussian curve를 보여 주었으며 peak의 위치는 510nm이었다. CdS : In 박막의 spectral response의 peak는 상온에서 500nm이다. CdS : In 광전도 cell의 sensitivity ${\gamma}$ =0.77이고, 최대 허용소비전력은 p=120mW, 100lux에서 rise time은 8 msec, decay time 은 6 msec이다.

The Characteristics of Diamond-like Carbon Films Deposited by Low Frequency(60Hz) Plasma CVD at Room Temperature for Optical lens (광학렌즈를 위한 저주파(60Hz) 플라즈마 CVD로 실온에서 제작한 다이아몬드성 탄소 박막의 특성)

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were fabricated by low frequency(60Hz) Plasma enhanced Chemical vapor deposition(LF-PECVD) at room temperature. The LF_PECVD has a couple of advantages as follows: cheap, and the employment of low power density makes the damage of samples small. The a-C:H films deposited in this work were highly transparent(99%), highly resistance(109-1011${\Omega}$-cm), and very uniform. The samples were deposited by the decomposition of CH4 and H2 mixing gas in the pressure rate range of 1% to 30%. The deposition rates, optical gap, and hydrogen contents are increased with CH4 contents.

Optimizing and Modeling Brightness Development in Peroxide Bleaching of Thermomechanical Pulp

  • Alkaline peroxide bleaching of (chemi) mechanical pulp is a very complicated system where various process factors affect the bleaching performance and pulp properties. Traditional on-factor-at a time method is ineffective and costly in finding the optimal bleaching conditions. In this study statistical experimental methods which include three steps. I. e. screening, response surface modeling and optimization, were used to find the conditions for maximal brightness development during one stage alkaline peroxide bleaching of TMP which had an initial brightness of 54.5% Elerpho. The TMP was pretreated with EDTA(0.5% on O. D. pulp. consistency, $30^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes) and bleached in a 2L Mark V Quantum Reactor at 750rpm, 7.5% of bleaching consistency and with 0.05% magnesium sulfate addition. The ranges of other factors studied were 1~5% hydrogen peroxide on O. D plup, 1~4% sodium hydroxide on O. D pulp and 1~4% sodium silicate on O. D pulp, reaction temperature 50~$90^{\circ}C$ and reaction time 40~180minutes. A models with good predictability was established and the maximal brightness after one stage bleaching was found to be 70% Elerpho at $50^{\circ}C$, 50 minutes 5% hydrogen peroxide on O. D. pulp 3.2~3.4% sodium hydroxide on O. D. pulp 3.2~3.4% sodium hydroxide on O. D pulp and 4% silicate on O. D pulp. However further studies on other pulp properties such as strength and brightness stability shall be carried out in order to find out the optimal bleaching conditions.
