  • The effects of shield gas on the structure of methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames were numerically investigated. The near extinction flame of a low global strain rate 20 $s^{-1}$ of 19% methane diluted by 81% nitrogen by volume and undiluted air was computed. The flame shape, centerline temperature and axial velocity profiles were compared for different velocity of the shield gas and with and without the shield gas. The effects of the velocity of the shield gas were negligible for $V_{S}/V_{F}{\leq}2$ in normal gravity. Under normal gravity conditions, the flame shape and its position with the shield gas were different from those of the flame without the shield gas, whereas no discernible effects of the shield gas along the centerline were observed in zero gravity.

  • Structure of flashback and reignition occurring near flameholder was experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter flameholder. The combustor has a long duct shape with cross section of $40{\times}40mm$ and City Nature Gas(CNG) were used as fuel. Measurements of chemiluminescence with high speed camera was used for visualization of flame structure. In the lean case, flashback distance depend on equivalent ratio. New flame occurred at the front tip of flameholder when flashback. Flashback flame moved toward downstream direction of combustor because mixture flow velocity had increased, and then re-ignition was caused by entering flow into recirculation zone that is formed behind the flameholder.

  • The characteristics of flame dynamics occurring near the bluff body was experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter bluff body. Measurements of chemiluminescence with high speed camera and PIV were performed for visualization of flame structure. Flashback occurs due to the change of pressure gradient in the combustor, and the flashback distance depends on equivalent ratio. Unstable flames can be classified into three types depending on the flashback distance and structure. When the flame goes over the bluff body, an unusual flame structure occurs at the front of the bluff body. Re-stabilization takes place as the flame moves downstream of the combustor. This process is supported by a strong vortex structure behind the bluff body.

  • Mechanism of combustion frequencies occurring during combustion is experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter flameholder. The combustor has a long duct shape with a cross section area of $40{\times}40mm$. The v-gutter type flameholder with 10, 12, 14mm width is mounted at the side wall of combustor. CNG were used as fuel, and the fuel was injected transversely into air crossflow. It is found that combustion frequencies were considered as first longitudinal mode caused by combustor geometry. And it is found that flameholder length affects the flame holding range. Also, it is observed first longitudinal pressure oscillations make significant changes of flame structure.

  • The effects of aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) or fumaric acid treatment on the reduction of microbial populations in hot pepper, ginger, and carrot, were investigated. Hot pepper, ginger, and carrot were treated with 5, 10, or 50 ppm of $ClO_2$, or 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5%(v/v) fumaric acid solution for 5 min. Aqueous $ClO_2$ or fumaric acid treatment significantly decreased the populations of both total aerobic bacteria, and yeasts and molds. In particular, 50 ppm $ClO_2$ treatment of hot pepper reduced total aerobic bacteria and yeast and mold levels, by 1.52 and 1.81 log CFU/g, respectively, whereas 0.5% (v/v) fumaric acid treatment eliminated all aerobic bacteria and all yeasts and molds. In addition, 50 ppm $ClO_2$ treatment of ginger reduced the populations of total aerobic bacteria, and yeasts and molds, by 0.53 and 0.92 log CFU/g, respectively, and 0.5% (v/v) fumaric acid treatment also decreased total aerobic bacteria, and yeast and mold levels, by 1.44 and 1.28 log CFU/g, respectively. With carrots, 50 ppm $ClO_2$ treatment decreased total aerobic bacteria, and yeasts and molds, by 1.76 and 2.22 log CFU/g, whereas 0.5% (v/v) fumaric acid treatment reduced the levels of these microorganisms by 1.94 and 1.73 log CFU/g, respectively. These results indicate that aqueous $ClO_2$ or fumaric acid treatment is useful for reducing microbial populations in hot peppers, ginger, and carrots.

  • The characteristics of lifted butane flames diluted with nitrogen have been investigated experimentally in order to elucidate the mechanism of individual flame oscillation modes. Flame oscillations in laminar free-jet lift-off flames are classified into the following five regimes: a stabilized lift-off regime (I), a heat-loss-induced oscillation (II), a buoyancy-induced oscillation along with a heat-loss-induced oscillation (III), a combined form of an oscillation prior to blow-out and a heat-loss-induced oscillation (IV), and a combination of an oscillation prior to blow-out and a buoyancy-induced oscillation along with a heat-loss-induced oscillation (V). The characterization of the individual flame oscillations modes are presented and discussed using Strouhal numbers and their relevant parameters by the analysis of the power spectrum for temporal variation of the lift-off height.

  • The ignition characteristics of a $CH_4$/hot air counterflow diffusion flame were investigated numerically using a flame-controlling continuation method. For the chemical reactions, the GRI-v1.2 reaction mechanism was used in the simulation. The maximum flame temperature was presented in the space of the inverse global strain rate, and showed S-curve-type behavior. The flame temperatures and velocities of the upper and middle branches were compared for different global strain rates. In addition, the global strain rate was compared with the local strain rates defined at the flame surface and the boundaries of the fuel and oxidizer sides of the fuel/air mixing layer. These local strain rates correlated well with the global strain rate.

  • In this study, characteristics of jet type flame holder for ramjet engine combustors are investigated Jet flame holder can be easily controlled by the injection angle change and jet momentum variation without any thermal protection devices. Due to the intensive turbulent mixing effect, jet flame holder shows better flame holding performance than mechanical flame holders such as cavity, step and v-shape flame holder.

  • The stabilization of propane/air lean premixed flames by a heated cylindrical rod is investigated experimentally. The flame stability limits, heat flux, surface temperatures, equivalence ratios, and mixture velocities are measured in order to understand the role of heat flux or surface temperature on the flame stabilization of lean premixed flames. The flame stability limits are lowered by a heated cylindrical rod and extended even below the flammability limit of propane/air mixture when sufficient heat flux is provided. The flame stability limit decreases with the increase of heat flux or surface temperature and decreases with the higher mixture velocity. The diameter of cylindrical rod, however, dose not significantly affect the flame stability limit. The laminar flame speed has been measured for ultra lean propane/air premixed flames. The flame stabilization by a heated cylindrical rod provides the useful tool for the measurement of flame speed under very fuel-lean conditions.

  • In this paper, the discharge phenomena and electromagnetic waves caused by discharge with insertion of a solid insulator and flame between sphere-sphere electrodes in air ware investigated. The surface discharge light and patterns of flame generated on a solid insulator surface were observed by using a CCD(Charged Coupled Device) camera. Also, the radiated electromagnetic waves were measured by using a biconical antenna and a spectrum analyzer. The surface discharge light generated on the solid insulator surface was larger and the size of flame was smaller by increasing allied voltages. Also, voltage distortion by voltage drop was strongly revealed when a insulator surface was polluted. When a solid insulator surface was not polluted, the electric field stength of electromagnetic waves was 10∼17[dBuV/m] higher than a polluted solide insulator, and 5∼9[dBuV/m] higher than a polluted solide insulator and flame.
