As power grids are integrated into one big umbrella (i.e., Smart Grid), communication network plays a key role in reliable and stable operation of power grids. For successful operation of smart grid, interoperability and security issues must be resolved. Security means providing network system integrity, authentication, and confidentiality service. For a cyber-attack to a power grid system, which may jeopardize the national security, vulnerability of communication infrastructure has a serious impact on the power grid network. While security aspects of power grid network have been studied much, security mechanisms are rarely adopted in power gird communication network. For security issues, strict timing requirements are defined in IEC 61850 for mission critical messages (i.e., GOOSE). In this paper, we apply security algorithms (i.e., MD-5, SHA-1, and RSA) and measure their processing time and transmission delay of secured mission critical messages. The results show the algorithms satisfying the timing requirements defined in IEC 61850 and we observer the algorithm that is optimal for secure communication of mission critical messages. Numerical analysis shows that SHA-1 is preferable for secure GOOSE message sending.
Until now some countries including South Korea have made big progress and many efforts in the development of high temperature superconductor (HTS) power equipments. Especially, HTS Cable and superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) are the strongest candidates among them from the viewpoint of applying to real grid. In South Korea, HTS cable and SFCL have been installed in test fields and tested successfully at Gochang PT Center of KEPCO. In order to meet practical requirements and be feasible in real grid, a demonstration project for HTS cable and SFCL systems, called GENI(green superconducting electric power network at Icheon substation) project, has been initiated to install 23kV HTS cable and SFCL systems in a utility network in South Korea since 2008. Namely, it says the first demonstration project for the application HTS system to real smart grid in South Korea. This paper presents the design and the application plan of the 22.9kV HTS cable and SFCL in 154kV Icheon substation in South Korea with the viewpoint of applying in Smat Grid.

A novel anti-islanding method for the distributed power generation system (DPGS) is proposed in this paper. Three different islanding scenarios are explored and presented based on the analysis of real and reactive power mismatch. It is shown via investigation that islanding voltage is a function of real power alone, where its frequency is a function of both real and reactive power. Following this analysis, a robust anti-islanding algorithm is developed. The proposed algorithm continuously perturbs ($\pm$5%) the reactive power supplied by the DPGS while simultaneously monitoring the utility voltage and frequency. In the event of islanding, a measurable frequency deviation takes place, upon which the real power of the DPGS is further reduced to 80%. A drop in voltage positively confirms islanding and the DPGS is then safely disconnected. This method of control is shown to be robust: it is able to detect islanding under resonant loads and is also fast acting (operable in one cycle). Possible islanding conditions are simulated and verified through analysis. Experimental results on a 0.5kW fuel cell system connected to a utility grid are discussed.
Islanding phenomenon of utility-connected photovoltaic power conditioning systems(PV PCS) can cause a variety of problems and must be prevented. If the real and reactive power supplied by PV PCS are closely matched to those of load, islanding detection by passive methods becomes difficult. The active frequency drift(AFD) method, called the frequency bias method, enables islanding detection by forcing the frequency of the voltage in the islanding to drift up or down. In this paper, non-detection zone(NDZ) of AFD is analyzed for the islanding detection method of utility-connected PV PCS by the simulation software tool PSIM.
Islanding of PV systems occurs when the utility grid is removed but local sources continue to operate and provide power to local loads. Islanding is one of the serious problems in an electric power system connected with dispersed power sources. Also, this can present safety hazards and the possibility of damage to other electric equipments. If the real and reactive power of RLC load and PV system are closely matched, islanding phenomena can't be detected by the passive methods. Several active methods were proposed to detect islanding phenomena. The most effective method is SFS method which was suggested by Sandia National Laboratory. In this paper, a new anti-islanding algorithm is proposed and its validity is verified through simulation and experimental results for utility interconnection of PV system.
In this paper presents study of T-Type multi level inverter for utility interactive photo voltaic inverter. In order to increase efficiency and performance of utility interactive photo voltaic (UIPV) system, we propose multi level PCS topology, such as T-type inverter. The control algorithm for utility interactive inverter is implemented by simulation and experimentation, which includes dc-bus and midpoint voltage controller, ac-grid current controller and PLL algorithm.

In this paper, a novel prototype topology of soft switching PWM controlled high frequency AC power conversion circuit without DC voltage smoothing chemical capacitor filter link from the voltage grid of utility frequency AC power supply source with 60Hz-100V or 60Hz-200V is proposed and introduced for innovative consumer induction heating(IH) boiler applications as hot water producer, steamer and super heated vapor steamer.
At present various methods relating resource access control in grid environment are being studied. Most of the access authorization to grid resource is designed fit to the attributes and the role of user. But resource access control is to be made in the respect of business model to activate grid. Therefore this study suggests a model that can operate resource access control driven by grid accounting information. On the base of collection of accounting information about grid job, processing cost is yielded. If the user's available fund is less than processing cost, it gets to control grid job by the resource access control policy. Finally when grid job is completed, user is assigned to pay the charges for using resource of supplier. Then resource provider gets to supply stable resource in grid by participating it voluntarily to use idle resource. This study is esteemed to realize utility computing environment correspondent to economic principle by ensuring resource access policy of organizations which participate in grid.
30kW electrical power conversion system is delveloped for the variable speed wind turbine system. In the wind energy conversion system(WECS) a synchronous generator with field current excitation converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the voltage and frequency of generator output vary according to the wind speed, a dc/dc boosting chopper is utilized to maintain constant dc link voltage. Grid connection type PWM inverter supply currents into the utility line by regulating the dc link voltage. The active power is controlled by q-axis current which the reactive power can be controlled by d-axis current reference change. The phase angle of utility voltage is detected using s/w PLL(Phased Locked Loop) in d-q synchronous reference frame. This scheme gives a low cost power solution for variable speed WECS.

A smart meter is one of the core components in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that is responsible for providing effective control and monitor of electrical energy consumptions. The multifunction tasks that a smart meter carries out such as facilitating two-way communication between utility providers and consumers, managing metering data, delivering anomalies reports, analyzing fault and power quality, simply show that there are huge amount of data exchange in smart metering networks (SMNs). These data are prone to security threats due to high dependability of SMNs on Internet-based communication, which is highly insecure. Therefore, there is a need to identify all possible security threats over this network and propose suitable countermeasures for securing the communication between smart meters and utility provider office. This paper studies the architecture of the smart grid communication networks, focuses on smart metering networks and discusses how such networks can be vulnerable to security attacks. This paper also presents current mechanisms that have been used to secure the smart metering networks from specific type of attacks in SMNs. Moreover, we highlight several open issues related to the security and privacy of SMNs which we anticipate could serve as baseline for future research directions.
