A software package CARDS for general purpose robot design, control, and simulation has been developed and is presented here. CARDS (Computer Aided Robot Design and Simulation) consists of a collection of standardized subroutine modules that carry out typical kineamatic, dynamic, and control computations so that the user only needs to write a main program that further defines a particular robot configuration and the task to be performed. It provides users a complete simulation environment, so that it will be a valuable engineering tool for mechanical designers as well as electric control designers.
This paper develops a relatively comprehensive and sophisticated constitutive model of concrete for finite element analysis of concrete structures. The present model accounts for the hydrostatic pressure sensitivity and Lode angle dependence behavior of concrete, not only in its strength criterion, but also in its hardening characteristics. The implementation is carried out through incorporating the developed concrete model in User Subroutine Material(UMAT) of the general-purpose FE program ABAQUS(v.5.8). It is found that the model can sufficiently predict the hardening as well as the softening behaviour of concrete under high confining pressure.

The thermomechanical behaviors of SMA thin film actuator and their application are investigated. The numerical algorithm of the 2-D SMA thermomechanical constitutive equation is developed and implemented into the ABAQUS finite element program by using the user defined material (UMAT) subroutine. To verify the numerical algorithm of SMAs, the results are compared with experimental data. For the application of SMA thin film actuator, the methodology to maintain the precise configuration of inflatable membrane structure is demonstrated.
In the present study, a unified viscoplastic-damage model has been applied in order to describe the mechanical characteristics of fresh water ice such as nonlinear material behavior and volume fraction. The strain softening phenomenon of fresh water ice under quasi-static compressive loading has been evaluated based on unified viscoplastic model. The material degradation such as growth of slip/fraction has quite close relation with material inside damage. The volume fraction phenomenon of fresh water ice has been identified based on volume fraction (nucleation and growth of damage) model. The viscoplastic-damage model has been transformed to the fully implicit formulation and the discretized formulation has been implemented to ABAQUS user defined subroutine (User MATerial: UMAT) for the benefit of application of commercial finite element program. The proposed computational analysis method has been compared to uni-axial compression test of fresh water ice in order to validate the compatibilities, clarities and usefulness.
A study on the dynamic analysis of a tracked vehicle for mining on deep-sea bed with very soft soil is presented. An equation for the interaction between track and soft soil is employed to develop a track/soil interaction module called TVAS. The vehicle is modeled as a multi-body dynamic system using a multi-body dynamic analysis program. The developed module is incorporated into the multi-body dynamic analysis program with a user subroutine. The dynamic behavior and design of the mining vehicle on deep-sea bed is investigated.
In this study, we investigate the deformation behavior of F.C.C. single crystals containing micro- or submicron-sized voids by using three dimensional finite element methods. The locally homogeneous constitutive model for the rate-dependent crystal plasticity is integrated based on the backward Euler method and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) by means of user-defined subroutine (UMAT). The unit cell analysis has been investigated to study the effect of stress triaxiality and crystallographic orientations on the growth and coalescence of voids in F.C.C. single crystals.
Generally, ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems have a higher performance than conventional air-source systems. However, the major fault of GSHP systems is their expensive boring costs. Therefore, it is important issue that to reduce initial cost and ensure stability of system through accurate prediction of the heat extraction and injection rates of the ground heat exchanger. Conventional analysis methods employed by line source theory are used to predict heat transfer rate between ground heat exchanger and soil. Shape of ground heat exchanger was simplified by equivalent diameter model, but these methods do not accurately reflect the heat transfer characteristics according to the heat exchanger geometry. In this study, a numerical model that combines a user subroutine module that calculates circulation water conditions in the ground heat exchanger and FEFLOW program which can simulate heat/moisture transfer in the soil, is developed. Heat transfer performance was evaluated for 3 different types ground heat exchanger(U-tube, Double U-tube, Coaxial).
In this paper, the thermomechanical responses of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators and their applications as the shape adaptive structures combining SMA actuators produced in the form of strip with composite structures are investigated. The numerical algorithm of the 3-D SMA thermomechanical constitutive equations based on Lagoudas model is implemented to analyze the unique characteristics of SMA strip. Also, the incremental SMA constitutive equations are implemented in the user subroutine UMAT by using ABAQUS finite element program. The shape change of structure is caused by initially strained SMA strip bonded on the surface of the composite structure when thermally activated. Numerical results show that SMA strip actuator can generate enough recovery force to deform the composite structure and sustain the deformed shape subjected to large external load, simultaneously.
Constitutive models for final stage densification of metal powder compacts with power-law creep deformation were investigated. The constitutive models were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) by using user subroutine CREEP and, from FEM results, useful densification curves were obtained when hydrostatic and uniaxial stress were applied to the powder compacts at various pressures and temperatures. Because the densification behavior varied as the constitutive models, the equivalent stress surface on each constitutive equation was investigated to analyze the difference of densification behavior.
In this paper, we developed a physically-based micromechanical model for inelastic deformation of ceramic powders. The aggregate response of ceramic particles was modeled using the two-surface yield function which considered the shear-induced dilatancy caused by friction, rolling resistance and cohesion between powder particles and consolidation caused by plastic deformation of powder themselves under high compression. The constitutive equations were implemented into the user-subroutine VUMAT of finite element program ABAQUS/Explicit. The material parameters in the constitutive model were identified by calibrating the model to reproduce data from triaxial compression tests and simple compression tests. The density distribution obtained by using the proposed model was in good quantitative agreement with the experimental results of the triaxial compression and cold isostaic compression as well.
