Reduction of welding residual stress is very important in the railway industry, but calculating its distribution in structures is difficult because welding residual stress formation is influenced by various parameters. In this study, we developed a finite element model for simulating the repair welding process to recover a surface damaged rail, and conducted a series of parametric studies while varying the cooling rate and the duration of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the best conditions for reducing welding residual stress level. This paper presents a three-dimensional model of the repair welding process considering the phase transformation effect implemented by the ABAQUS user subroutine, and the results of parametric studies with various cooling rates and PWHT durations. We found that heat treatment significantly reduced the residual stress on the upper rail by about 170 MPa.
This work was focused on the material parameter extraction for the isothermal cyclic deformation analysis for which Chaboche(Combined Nonlinear Isotropic and Kinematic Hardening) and Overlay(Multi Linear Hardening) models are normally used. In this study all the parameters were driven especially based on Overlay theories. A simple method is suggested to find out best material parameters for the cyclic deformation analysis prior to the isothermal LCF(Low Cycle Fatigue) analysis. The parameter extraction was done using 400 series stainless steel data which were published in the reference papers. For simple and quick review of the parameters extracted by suggested method, 1D FORTRAN program was developed, and this program could reduce the time for checking the material data tremendously. For the application to FE code ABAQUS user subroutine for the material models was developed by means of UMAT(User Material Subroutine), and the stabilized hysteresis loops obtained by the numerical analysis were in good harmony with test results.
The milli-components for electronic and medical device etc. have been manufactured by conventional process. Forming and machining process for those milli-components need tremendous cost and time because products require higher dimensional accuracy than the conventional ones. For instance, conventional mechanical punching process has many drawbacks for applying to high accuracy products. The final radius of hole can be varied and burr which interrupting another procedure is generated. Hydro-mechanical punching process makes possible to reduce amount of burr and obtain the fine shearing surface using the operating fluid. Hydrostatic pressure retards occurrence of initial crack and induces to locate the fracture surface in the middle of sheet to thickness direction. In this paper, Hydro-mechanical punching process is analyzed using finite element method and the effect of hydrostatic pressure is evaluated during punching process. The prediction of fracture is performed adopting the various ductile fracture criteria such as Cockcroft, Brozzo and Oyane's criterion using a user subroutine in ABAQUS explicit.
Artillery gun tube experiences very high pressure according to the blast of propellant charge. Therfore, it is essential to guarantee the structural safety of the gun tube. On the other hand, weight reduction of gun tube is also a crucial design factor since the agility of artillery vehicle directly leads to its survivability. In this line of thought, this work proposed an efficient design procedure which utilizes the convex combination of breech pressure and projectile base pressure time histories. Its efficiency is verified by comparing with other procedures. Other procedures utilize different computed max pressure rather than the convex combination design pressure. Additionally, a transient analysis is carried out considering the projectile movement and the corresponding pressure distribution through the newly developed ABAQUS user-subroutine. The analysis confirms the structural safety of the lightweight gun tube designed by the proposed method.
In the present study, a unified viscoplastic-damage model has been applied in order to describe the mechanical characteristics of fresh water ice such as nonlinear material behavior and volume fraction. The strain softening phenomenon of fresh water ice under quasi-static compressive loading has been evaluated based on unified viscoplastic model. The material degradation such as growth of slip/fraction has quite close relation with material inside damage. The volume fraction phenomenon of fresh water ice has been identified based on volume fraction (nucleation and growth of damage) model. The viscoplastic-damage model has been transformed to the fully implicit formulation and the discretized formulation has been implemented to ABAQUS user defined subroutine (User MATerial: UMAT) for the benefit of application of commercial finite element program. The proposed computational analysis method has been compared to uni-axial compression test of fresh water ice in order to validate the compatibilities, clarities and usefulness.
Fluid model based numerical analysis is done to simulate a plasma processing system with electrodes at floating potential. $V_f$ is a function of electron temperature, electron mass and ion mass. Commercial plasma fluid simulation softwares do not provide options for floating electrode boundary value condition. We developed a user subroutine in CFD-ACE+ and compared four different cases: grounded, dielectric, zero normal electric field and floating electric potential for a 2D-CCP (capacitively coupled plasma) with a ring electrode.
