  • This work demonstrates the results of full-scale numerical experiments of a hybrid thorium-containing fuel plant operating in a state close to critical due to a controlled source of D-T neutrons. The proposed facility represented a level of generated power (~10-100 MWt) in a small pilot. In this work, the simulation of the D-T neutron plasma source operation in conjunction with the facility blanket was performed. The fission of fuel nuclei and the formation of spatial-energy release were studied in this simulation, in pulsed and stationary modes of the facility operation. The optimization results of neutronic and fluid dynamics studies to level the emerging offsets of the radial energy formed in the volume of the facility multiplying part due to the pulsed operation of the D-T neutron plasma source were presented. The results will be useful in improving the power control-based subcriticality monitoring method in coupled systems of the "pulsed neutron source-subcritical fuel assembly" type.

  • This article claims that English liquid consonants are characterized by the presence of complex place nodes, regardless of dialectal varieties. The primary difference between rhotic and laterals can be pursued in a phonological sense. The level of subbranching nodes is in charge of the disparities among two types of liquids: the branching immediately below the Coronal node with laterals, while branching at the secondary sublevel with rhotics. In this context, the processes of rhotic deletion and lateral vocalization can be understood as those motivated to get rid of complex place nodes. That is, those processes take place as part of phonological attrition. Next, the onset/coda asymmetry regarding liquids stems from the dispreference of vocoid at the onset position, which is readily accounted for by the series of constraints on the well-formedness on the onset, namely Harmonic Onset. The rationale of gradualness and harmonic improvement proposed by Harmonic Serialism is useful to separate the attested outputs from unattested ones across the whole gamut of English varieties. All in all, the primary benefits of our analysis can be found in the consistence in the explanation for the operations running through the sounds regarded as belonging to liquid consonants, comprising the whole range of rhotic and lateral consonants.

  • We demonstrate that a deep learning classifier that only uses to gravitational wave (GW) detectors auxiliary channel data can distinguish various types of non-Gaussian noise transients (glitches) with significant accuracy, i.e., ≳ 80%. The classifier is implemented using the multi-scale neural networks (MSNN) with PyTorch. The glitches appearing in the GW strain data have been one of the main obstacles that degrade the sensitivity of the gravitational detectors, consequently hindering the detection and parameterization of the GW signals. Numerous efforts have been devoted to tracking down their origins and to mitigating them. However, there remain many glitches of which origins are not unveiled. We apply the MSNN classifier to the auxiliary channel data corresponding to publicly available GravitySpy glitch samples of LIGO O1 run without using GW strain data. Investigation of the auxiliary channel data of the segments that coincide to the glitches in the GW strain channel is particularly useful for finding the noise sources, because they record physical and environmental conditions and the status of each part of the detector. By only using the auxiliary channel data, this classifier can provide us with the independent view on the data quality and potentially gives us hints to the origins of the glitches, when using the explainable AI technique such as Layer-wise Relevance Propagation or GradCAM.

  • Early neutral evaluation (ENE) is a fairly recent form of alternative dispute resolution procedure used in the construction industry. In the UK, ENE is usually carried out on an entirely without prejudice basis, however the parties may agree that any or part of it may be referred to at trial or any subsequent hearing. The early neutral evaluation consists of a preliminary assessment of the issues in dispute for use as a basis for negotiations which may result in a settlement of the dispute. An independent person is appointed by the parties who reviews the case and provides an opinion, in written form and in some detail, with reasons on the merits of the matters in dispute. The opinion is non-binding but provides the parties with what in the opinion of the independent person a formal tribunal may decide whether a court or an arbitrator, if the dispute is not resolved. However, ENE has yet to take off in the construction industry in the UK. This paper will explain this procedure and explore the use of it in the UK and internationally, considering the benefits and drawbacks of its use. It will consider whether or not it is more effective than other early resolution forms such as mediation and adjudication. It will argue and conclude that it is a very useful cost effective procedure, particularly in the resolution of complex disputes, whether local or international.

  • Research to replace metal mechanical elements with polymer materials has recently accelerated. However, polymers exhibit less favorable mechanical properties than metal materials, and are often easily worn-out owing to frictional heat when their mechanical elements contact while in relative motion. Therefore, research on the polymer tribological properties is required to employ polymer materials in mechanical elements operating under harsh conditions. In this study, we examine the effect of mechanical part operating temperatures on the material friction and wear characteristics of polymer materials. We conduct ball-on-disk friction tests under dry conditions at various temperatures, using a metal ball with high hardness and a polymer as the counter surface. Each test is repeated at least three times to ensure the reliability of the test results. Before the friction test, we analyze the surface hardness and roughness of each polymer specimen; after the friction test, we use a three-dimensional confocal microscope to compare and analyze the polymer specimen wear characteristics. Based on this study, we systematically elucidate the polymer material tribological characteristics. This information should be useful for selecting and utilizing polymer materials at various temperatures.

  • Background Skin defects in the hands are common injuries, and autologous skin grafting is the ideal treatment. However, complications can occur at the donor and recipient sites. This study compares the "Swing-door" technique with conventional skin grafting. Methods From August 2019 to February 2023, 19 patients with skin defects of hand underwent the "Swing-door" split-thickness skin graft (STSG) technique. The thin epithelial layer was elevated with proximal part attached. Skin graft was harvested beneath. Donor site was then closed with epithelial flap like a "Swing-door". The outcomes were evaluated in terms of healing time, scar formation, and pain at the donor and recipient sites. The data were compared with the conventional STSG. Results The "Swing-door" group had lower graft take percentages, but complications did not significantly differ between the two groups. The "Swing-door" technique resulted in better cosmetic outcomes, as evidenced by lower Vancouver Scar Scale scores, faster donor site epithelialization, and reduced pain and discomfort during the early postoperative period, as measured by Visual Analog Scale. Conclusion The "Swing-door" STSG is a useful alternative for treating hand skin defects.

  • Soybean (Glycine max L.) is one of the most widely planted and used legumes in the world, being used for food, animal feed products, and industrial production. The soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is the most prevalent virus infecting soybean plants. This study developed a diagnostic method for the rapid and sensitive detection of SMV using a reverse transcription-recombinase polymerase amplification (RT-RPA) technique combined with a lateral flow strip (LFS). The RT-RPA and RT-RPA-LFS conditions to detect the SMV were optimized using the selected primer set that amplified part of the VPg protein gene. The optimized reaction temperature for the RT-RPA primer and RT-RPA-LFS primer used in this study was 38℃ for both, and the minimum reaction time was 10 min and 5 min, respectively. The RT-RPA-LFS was as sensitive as RT-PCR to detect SMV with 10 pg/µl of total RNA. The reliability of the developed RT-RPA-LFS assay was evaluated using leaves collected from soybean fields. The RT-RPA-LFS diagnostic method developed in this study will be useful as a diagnostic method that can quickly and precisely detect SMV in the epidemiological investigation of SMV, in the selection process of SMV-resistant varieties, on local farms with limited resources.
