An Electrophysiologic Study on the Ulnar Digital Nerves (척골 지단 신경의 전기생리학적 연구)

  • The ulnar nerve extends down the arm, across the elbow, and into the hand. It provides sensation to the little and ring fingers and activates many of the small muscles in the hand. The determination of peripheral nerve conduction velocity is an important part of ulnar nerve evaluation. The electrodiagnostic value as neurophysiologic investigative procedure has been known for many years but normal value of digital nerve was not reported in Korea. The purpose of this investigation was to measure the digital nerve conduction velocity of ulnar nerve for obtain clinically useful reference value and compare difference in each fingers and then compare with the other countries. 71 normal Korean volunteers (age, 19-65 years; 142 hands) examined who has no history of peripheral neuropathy, diabetic mellitus, chronic renal failure, endocrine disorders, anti-cancer medicine, anti-tubercle medicine, alcoholism, trauma, radiculopathy. Nicolet Viking II (EMG machine) was use for detected conduction velocity and amplitude of digital nerves in ulnar nerve. Data analysis was performed using SPSS. Descriptive analysis was used for obtain mean and standard deviation and independent t-test was used to compare with ring and little finger. Conduction velocity of the right ring finger was 57.44m/sec and little finger was 55.32msec. The left ring finger was 55.55msec and little finger was 54.11msec. Amplitude of the right ring finger was $30.28{\mu}V$ and little finger was $48.36{\mu}V$. The left ring finger was $30.67{\mu}V$ and little finger was $52.76{\mu}V$. There were significantly difference between ring and little in amplitude (p<.05) but there were no statistically difference between conduction velocity of ring and little finger (p>.05). The amplitude of little finger are greater than ring finger. The present results revealed that electodiagnosis can easily perform in little finger for digital nerve of ulnar nerve study.

  • We, currently settled on the peninsula, have a long history and our ancestors lived over the vast land further to the central Asia and northern China. Normally, our ancestors traded with many countries, but they fought battles when they were on bad terms and many countries emerged and disappeared. In this history, a variety of cultures have been established and the traditional martial arts is a part of those cultures. Our martial arts has been almost severed because of the development of fire weapons in the late Chosun Dynasty, Japan's colonial rule, and 1950-53 Korean War. Fortunately, we can study the traditional martial arts from history books, the records on the martial art books and relics. Muyeadobotongji, the martial art book published in the late Chosun Dynasty, regrets the negligence of martial arts Giyae(arts) after Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Manchu war of 1636 and accommodated the martial art skills from Chosun, China and Japan. It is useful for studying martial arts, because it contains detailed description and drawings, clothes and accessories, and the specification of the weapons. However, the problem is the level of Giyae of the martial arts organization and individuals based on Muyeadobotongji vary and some organizations are arguing about the numbers.

  • Bicycle is a useful transportation mode that is healthy, emission-free, and environmentally compatible. Although large efforts have been made to promote the use of bicycling to date, there still exist various hurdles and limitations. One of the key issues to increase bicycling is how to gather bicycle-related data from the field and to generate valuable information for both users and operations agencies. This study proposes a method to process bicycle trajectory data which is obtained from tracing global positioning systems(GPS) equipped bicycle, which is defined as the probe bicycle. The proposed method is based on the concept of statistical quality control of data. In addition, a data collection and processing scenario in support of public bicycle system is presented. The outcomes of this study would be valuable fundamentals for developing bicycle traffic information systems that is a part of future intelligent transportation systems(ITS).

Recommendation of Serving Size of the Meal Service of Community Child Centers in Korea (지역아동센터 급식을 위한 적정 배식량 제안)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to set easily applicable portion sizes by sex and age for children at the Community Child Centers (CCC) in Korea. Methods: Considering the age and gender specific energy level at Target Patterns for children aged 6-18 years, which were suggested as a part of the 2010 Korean Food Guidance System (KFGS), we set three meal sizes. We reclassified the recommended daily servings of Grains, Meat fish eggs beans and Vegetables group at Target Patterns into three meal sizes, and then calculated the recommended serving per meal. Each proposed amount of food per meal was calculated based on serving size of foods commonly eaten at KFGS, which was then allocated to five meal components; rice, soup stew, protein and vegetable side-dishes and Kimchi. Each proposed amount of food per meal was applied to 173 menus' recipes from CANpro 3.0 as main ingredient's amounts. We cooked the 173 menus at the medium size and measured their weights after cooking. Results: Each recommended serving per meal was 0.75, 0.9 and 1.2 for Grains; 1.2, 1.6 and 2.4 for Meat fish eggs beans; 2, 2.4 and 2.8 for Vegetables by meal sizes. Among five meal components, the ratio of small and large to medium size was 1/5 less and 1/3 more for rice and 1/3 less and 1/3 more for soup stew, protein side-dish and Kimchi, respectively. We suggested the same amount for a vegetable side-dish to encourage vegetable intake. Proper portion sizes per meal of medium were rice 190 g, soup stew 210 g (solid ingredients 60 g), protein side-dish 100 g (meat eggs beans) and 70 g (fish), vegetable side-dish 80g and Kimchi 30 g. Conclusions: Proper portion size per meal suggested in this study may be useful at the CCC where dietitians are not available and the approach could be applicable to the other types of meal services.

Identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Pleural Effusion by Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR) (흉막 삼출액에서 중합효소 연쇄반응(PCR)을 이용한 M. tuberculosis의 검출)

  • Background: Since polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was devised by Saiki in 1985, it has been used extensively in various fields of molecular biology. Clinically, PCR is especially useful in situation when microbiological or serological diagnosis is limited by scanty amount of causative agents. Thus, PCR can provide rapid and sensitive way of detecting M. tuberculosis in tuberculosis pleurisy which is diagnosed in only about 60 % of cases by conventional method. Method: To evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of PCR in tuberculosis pleurisy, The results of PCR was compared with those of conventional method, including pleural biopsy. The pleural effusion fluid was collected from 7 proven patients, 7 clinically suspected patients and control group(7 patients with malignant effusion). We extracted DNA from pleural fluid by modified method of Eisennach method(1991). The amplification target for PCR was 123 base pair DNA, a part of IS6110. Result: 1) Sensitivity of PCR: We detected upto 50fg DNA. 2) In patients with pleural effusion of proven tuberculosis, the positive rate of PCR was 85.7%(6/7). In patients with pleural effusion of clinically suspected tuberculosis, the positive rate was 71.5%(5/7). In control group, positive rate was 0%(0/7). Conclusion: We concluded that PCR method could be a very rapid, sensitive and specific one for diagnosis of M tuberculosis in pleural effusion. Further studies should be followed for the development of easier method.

The Regional Folk Plants in Southern Inland Area of Gyeonggi-do (경기남부 내륙지역의 민속식물자원)

  • This study was carried out to clarify the regional folk plants in the southern inland area of Gyeonggi-do Province. According to the survey results, derived from 1,229 sheets of 90 residents at 35 places from 9 counties and cities between October 2009 and December 2010, the folk plants in the inland southern area of Gyeonggi-do consisted of a total of 259 taxa; 82 families, 200 genera, 221 species, 4 subspecies, 32 varieties, and 2 forma. The classification of the plants by its usage was; 214 as edible, 119 as medicinal, 34 as ornamental, 18 as timber, 12 as dye, 5 as oil, 3 as spice, 2 as fiber, 2 as aroma, and 22 as others uses. So, the edible and medicinal uses are higher than other uses. The most useful part was the leaf, followed by fruit, stem, root, and flower. The collection season was focused on spring and summer, because the leaf was mainly collected in an edible condition during those seasons. Traditional knowledge of folk plants was mostly passed down orally. The consistency comparison between the standard common name and the local name was the highest in the people in 50s and the lowest in those in 80s.

A Study on the Plants Used as Temple Food in Jeju Island (제주지역 사찰음식으로 이용되는 식물에 대한 연구)

  • We examined plants that were used as temple food in Jeju from May 2011 to January 2012. Thirty-six temples participated in the study, and there were 58 questionnaire respondents. Fifty-seven taxa were used as temple food, which belonged to 27 families, 51 genera, 55 species, and two varieties. The most commonly used family-based taxa were eight species of Compositae, six species of Cruciferae, and four species of Umbelliferae. Ten species of woody plants and 25 species of Jeju native plants were also used as temple food. The most useful part was the leaf, followed by the root, leaflet, and fruit. A patent search showed that most of the surveyed plants were covered by intellectual property rights. Forty-eight species had food-related patents, 34 species had cosmetics-related patents, and 38 species had medicine-related patents. The purchase and procurement of Jeju temple food plants usually depended on the market or plant cultivation rather than the use of the plants. Gathering of wild herbs for temple food has been performed on a limited basis. Therefore, collecting traditional knowledge for the use of Jeju plant resources should be conducted under different conditions rather than through a temple-related study.

  • This study was carried out to classify the folk plants in southern region of Gangwon-do. According to the survey results from 1,103 survey sheets of 83 residents at 32 places of 9 counties and cities from March to October, 2010, the folk plants in the southern region of Gangwon-do consisted of a total 311 taxa; 92 families, 222 genera, 274 species, 2 subspecies, 29 varieties, and 6 form. The use by its usage was: 227 taxa; Edible, 174 taxa; Medicinal, 14 taxa; Ornamental, 5 taxa; Oil, 5 taxa; Spice, 4 taxa; Dye, 1 taxa; Fiber, 1 taxa; Aroma, 1 taxa; Fuel, 32 taxa; Others, respectively, so the edible use is the highest. The most useful part was the leaf, followed by root and fruit. The consistency comparison between the scientific name and the local name were the highest in the 50's and the lowest in 80's.

Investigation of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in the Adipocyte Fatty-Acid Binding Protein (FABP4) Gene (FABP4 유전자의 단일염기 다형성에 관한 연구)

  • We found 8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in adipocyte fatty acid bonding protein (FABP4) gene as candidate gene of FAT1 locus on pig chromosome 4. With over 800 heads of major commercial pig breeds including Duroc, Landrace, Berkshire and Yorkshire, we analyzed SNPs of FABP4 gene to determine possible effects of FABP4 genotype to economically important traits. $400{\sim}800\;bp$ amplicons in FABP4 gene were used PCR-RFLP for each SNPs and we found that the frequency of some SNPs of this gene was different among the breeds. According to the statistical analyses to determine possible associations of each genotype with economic traits, it was found that subgroup with different genotypes showed significant differences in daily gain, backfat thickness, lean percentage and feed conversion ratio (P<0.05). Thus, as a Part of enhancing the selection competence related to swine growth rate and lean percentage, it is expected that FABP4 gene markers verified in this study will be useful to use for Korean commercial pig industry.

An Explorative Study on Using the Method of Natural Family Planning (자연적 가족계획방법 사용에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • This study was attempted to understand experiences of the users of natural family planning(NFP) by applying Q-methodology. 37 statements were used to Q population through literature research and interviews. For the P sample. I interviewed personally 30 people who had taken a lesson in NFP for over 6 months and had been using and experiencing it autonomously for more than 2 years so far, and asked them to Q-classify the statement cards in order of the degree of approval, from the one they most approved to the one they least approved. Data were coded and input into a computer and were analyzed using QUANL PC Program. In this study, I discovered 4 types of experiences by the users of NFP and named them each according to their features: the first, a type of mutual control with morality, the second, a type of the pursuit of mutual -cooperation, the third. a type of the pursuit of conviction. and the fourth, a type of the perception of health management. The first type said that NFP was a good contraceptive way in which no drug or devices are used, that the husband's cooperation was needed, and that they became able to control sexual desire with morality. The second type perceived that continuous efforts were required to put NFP in practice, that the, husband's cooperation was essential, and that dialogues between husband and wife were also necessary to use it, and as such they regarded mutual cooperation between husband and wife as highly important. On the other hand. the third type perceived that one's conviction played a big part, that knowledge of physiological changes was useful and the ability to sense physical changes improved. and that one's willpower was important. and thus they regarded one's own willpower as most important. The fourth type reported that this method was a good way to control pregnancy and should be taught about at the beginning of sex education. and thus they were emphasizing the importance of NFP as a helpful way to manage one's health. 1. therefore, intend to provide the following suggestions based on the result of this study. 1) It is necessary to develop a program that allows NFP to be applied to sex education program. 2) It is necessary to analyze factors that affect the execution of NFP. 3) It is necessary to analyze causes of failure of those who fail to execute NFP.
