The purpose of this study was to investigate Korean undergraduate students' metacognitive awareness and preference of effective learning strategies. To achieve this goal, a scenario-based survey was conducted focusing on the metacognitive awareness, preference, and use of seven effective learning strategies (modality effect, static-media presentations, absence of extraneous details, testing, distributed learning, interleaved learning, generation) that were empirically supported. This study also aimed to explore the relationships between grade point average (GPA), metacognitive self-regulation, and the aforementioned variables to investigate which students know about, prefer, and use effective learning strategies. The majority of students were unknowledgeable about four of the seven strategies (modality effect, static-media presentations, absence of extraneous details, interleaved learning). Only half of the students were correctly aware of effectiveness of the two strategies (testing, generation). Moreover, students showed low preference for effective learning strategies. GPA did not show a significant correlation with metacognitive awareness and preference of effective learning strategies; however, it showed a significant positive correlation with the use of effective learning strategies. Only for a few learning strategies, metacognitive self-regulation showed a positive correlation with metacognitive awareness, preference, and/or their use. This study suggests that it is important to teach effective learning strategies to undergraduates with a specific direction of instruction. In addition, this study distinguishes metacognitive awareness from preference, suggesting that these two may reflect different constructs.

This study was inspired by the growing importance of information as a resource for improving the quality of life, the lack of systematic research about the information environment of Koreans in the United States and the lack of understanding of the relationships between individual characteristics and information seeking behavior. During 1990 and 1991, 204 Koreans, 18 years old and more, residing in the City of Los Angeles, were interviewed. Generally the information seeking behavior of Koreans appeared to be similar to that of the socioeconomically advantaged segment of the general public. They are relatively well aware of their information needs. capable of articulating them, and willing to pursue information to meet their needs. Major findings include: (1) the dominance of educational information needs: (2) positive feelings of hope, curiosity. and interest associated with information needs: (3) the tendency to pursue information with the expectation of potential rather than immediate rewards: (4) the expertise of information sources and their ability to provide information directly relevant to a need as criteria for selecting an information source: (5) the generally heavy reliance on informal interpersonal information sources and the high ranking of professionals as the starting point for information seeking and in judgements of usefulness: and (6) the dominant use of Korean ethnic information sources. Statistically significant correlations found at the 0.05 level relate (1) level of education, age, and gender with type of information need, the feelings associated with an information need, motivations to seek information, and the use of information sources, (2) proficiency in English and length of residence in the United States with the extent to which ethnic information sources are used, and (3) pattern of daily use of media with the use of media in seeking information.
This paper examines the composition and the content of media art which is an art education subject in a national curriculum of Australia; and discusses implications for Korean education curriculums. Media covered by Media Art subject in Australia are the multi types of general media including TV, movie, video, newspaper, radio, video game, the internet, and mobile media; and their contents. The purpose of ACARA's media art education curriculum is to improve creative use, knowledge, understanding, and technology of communication techniques for multiple purposes and the audiences. Through the Media Art subject, both the students and the community are able to participate in the actual communications with the rich culture surrounding them and to develop the knowledge and understanding of the 5 core concepts of language, technology, system, audience and re-creation while testing the culture. The implication of this study is as the following. ACARA's media art education curriculum has been developed as an independent educational program and has a special significance within Australian education curriculums. Although ACARA's media art education curriculum is formed as an independent subject, it is suggested within the curriculum to instruct in close connection with other subjects upon execution. Its organization and elaborateness in curriculum composition are very effective in terms of the teacher's teaching-learning design and as well as the evaluation. This seems to show a good model of leading media literacy curriculum. ACARA's media art education curriculum can be a great reference in introducing media literacy to Korean national education curriculums.
In mathematics education, teaching-learning activity can be divided largely into the understanding the mathematical concepts, derivation of principles and laws acquirement of the mathematical abilities. We utilize various media, teaching tools, audio-visual materials, manufacturing materials for understanding mathematical concepts. But sometimes we cannot define or explain correctly the concepts as well as the derivation of principles and laws by these materials. In order to solve the problem we can use the computer. In this paper, ′the process of the length of curve being equal to the sum of the vectors when intervals get smaller′ and ′the process of calculating volume of spinning curve by using definite integral.′ Using the computers is more visible than other educational instruments like blackboards, O.H.Ps., etc. Also it can help students with solving mathematical problems intuitively. Consequently more effective teaching-learning activity can be done. Usage of computers is the best method for improving the mathematical abilities because computers have functions of the immediate reaction, operation, reference and deduction. One of the important characters of mathematics is accuracy, so we use computers for improving mathematical abilities. This paper is about the program focused on the part of "the application of definite integral", which exists in mathematical curriculum the second and third grade of high school. When this study is used for students as assisting materials, it is expected the following educational effect. 1. Students will have precise concepts because they can understand what they learn intuitively. 2. Students will have positive thought by arousing interests of learning because this program is composed of pictures, animations with effectiveness of sound. 3. It is possible to change the teacher-centered instruction into the student-centered instruction. 4. Students will understand the relation between velocity and distance correctly because they can see the process of getting the length of curve by vector through the monitor. For the purpose of increasing the efficiencies and qualities of mathematics education, we have to seek the various learning-teaching methods. But considering that no computer can replace the teacher′s role, teachers have to use the CIA program carefully.

For the purpose of increasing the efficiencies and qualities of mathmatics education, we have to seek the various learning-teaching methods. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the education contents on safe use of medications in healthcare textbooks for elementary, middle and high schools. Methods: We examined 6 textbooks for the $5^{th}$ grade, 4 textbooks for middle school, 3 textbooks for high school, and 5 education materials published by the Korea Food and Drug Administration, National Health Insurance Service, and Seoul City Government. To evaluate the contents in health textbooks, we developed the 30 evaluation items. Results: Middle school textbooks had the most educational contents followed by high school and elementary school textbooks. Public education materials for the teenagers included more educational contents than those for children. The education material published by National Health Insurance Service had the highest score and the rest of the books earned under 15. And there were no core contents in medication education. Conclusions: Medication education through health textbooks should be strengthened to raise the level of medication awareness, to use medications safely, to prevent the drug abuse and misuse, and to establish the responsible judgment of medication information in the mass media. The current contents were found to be insufficient to meet these goals of medication education.
This study was conducted to investigate the effective educational and promotional strategies for the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children's Dietary Life on the basis of the survey conducted on parents. First of all, its result showed that most parents are well aware of the main contents of the law. They answered that, when choosing safe favorite food for children, the most important part is the article "Regulations on the standards for children's favorite food should be reinforced." As for the index of safety management for children's dietary life, most respondents think safety the most important; housewives and nuclear family members choose safety (p<.01), while large family members do nutrition. For the question asking how they get the information on safety management for children's dietary life, most of them answered that they generally use mass media, family and friends as a reference. Those with high income usually get the information from special books, those between 30s and 50 from mass media, and those with college graduates from civil social groups (p<.05). In case of taking the safety education programs for children's dietary life, they told that the most necessary information is concerned with hygienic dietary life and nutrition labeling on processed food; housewives are interested in the latter, while working people in the former (p<.05). As a method of informing parents of the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children's Dietary Life, mass media such as TV and radio, and school education are suggested in this survey. Therefore, this study proposes that mass media be considered as the most effective way of promoting the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children's Dietary Life and getting information concerning the law.
Objectives: A content analysis was conducted to examine whether the current school textbooks providing smoking information are effective or not. Methods: The authors reviewed 111 qualified textbooks using elementary through high schools during 2006-2007 academic year in Korea. Educational components were coded with an analysis tool developed through the present research. Result: Tobacco education components were narrowly focused on long-term physiological consequences of tobacco use, addictiveness, and harmful ingredients and they were repetitively shown in the textbooks. Negative health consequences such as lung cancer were emphasized 10 times among 12 smoking-related textbooks. Educational messages or contents are mainly based on medical knowledge (72%) rather than psycho-social components. The US school-based smoking prevention programs, however, employ psycho-social approach with cognitive and life-skill components and they contain only 7-17% of smoking-related medical knowledge. In order to increase psycho-social smoking prevention components in Korean textbooks, the present study identified social subjects of textbooks (and relating core sessions) for elementary, middle, and high school. It also provided guidelines for school instructors to use. Conclusion: Adolescent smoking behavior is not caused by the deficit of health information, but mostly by social influences including media and peer pressure. School textbooks proving smoking information need to increase psycho-social context. One of the most effective ways as a psycho-social smoking prevention program is to use social subjects (or curriculum) of textbooks such as social studies, ethics, social cultures, social environment, and home management.

The Information and Communication Technology(ICT) is applied variously by advanced development, however that also causes the ethical problem simultaneously nowadays. It is emphasized the necessity of information and communication ethics and the scheme also is suggested that the student actually may produce and use their own UCC as an educational material which relates to ethics of information and communication in this paper. By doing that activity, student could learn themselves from what they've produced. Therefore they can approach the subject with more interests, beside the method how teacher has been teaching normally which can be described as cramming. The suggestion is phased by the steps as below; First of all, adequate guidance is selected and the aim of education is established to the method of education through producing UCC by analyzing the contents system of information and communication ethics. Second, it is analyzed educational effect along media of UCC. Third, it is analyzed educational effect along the producing format of UCC. Finally, the scheme is developed that student could be learned from UCC they have created. Therefore, students could be participated by themselves more actively to the education and manage the negative effects of ICT. They also could acknowledge and determine the right ethical awareness of information and communication, and develop more advanced ethical awareness by doing this activity.

Operating Systems is a discipline which handles complex and abstract concepts related to its components and the principles of how an operating system works. However, most of the OS courses have been textbook-oriented theoretical classes. For students who are familiar with various kinds of media, theoretical classes lead to a decline in the understanding of a lecture and difficulty concentrating. They have tried to make use of educational tools to help students understand a lecture and arouse their interests consistently. This paper describes the design and implementation of a disk scheduling simulator which shows the service processes of disk I/O requests visually. The disk scheduling simulator can be used for demonstrations of the disk scheduling algorithms. The results of the academic achievement evaluation and survey showed that a disk scheduling simulator is useful as an educational tool which causes the interests about operating systems and enhances the understanding of a lecture.
