  • The somplest approximate confidence interval for the probability of success is the one based on the normal approximation to the binomial distribution, It is widely used in the introductory teaching, and various guidelines for its use with "large" sample have appeared in the literature. This paper suggests a guideline when to use it as an approximation to the exact confidence interval, and comparisons with existing guidelines are provided. provided.

  • In this paper we propose a class of tests for the parallelism of two regression lines based on linear placement statistics. The results of a small-sample Monte Carlo study show that the proposed tests are reasonably good in level control and powers.

  • Persistence homology (a type of methodology in computational algebraic topology) can be used to capture the topological characteristics of functional data. To visualize the characteristics, a persistence diagram is adopted by plotting baseline and the pairs that consist of local minimum and local maximum. We use the bottleneck distance to measure the topological distance between two different functions; in addition, this distance can be applied to multidimensional scaling(MDS) that visualizes the imaginary position based on the distance between functions. In this study, we use handwriting data (which has functional forms) to get persistence diagram and check differences between the observations by using bottleneck distance and the MDS.

  • This Study analyzed the use of statistics in 1,768 research articles published in 2001-2004 in 4 korean & 6 English core journals in the field of library and information science. Korean journals made significantly less use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Of the 663 inferential statistics used in 345 of the 1768 articles, the most frequently used inferential technique was multivariate analysis. There was significant difference in inferential methods used in Korean & English journals, also in traditional library science journals and information science journals.

  • The recent computational revolution of Bayesian statistics has expanded use of the Bayesian statistics significantly; however, Bayesian statistics face a new set of challenges in the era of information technology. We survey the history of Bayesian statistics briefly and its expansion in the modern times. We then take a prospective future view of statistics and list challenges that the statistics community faces.

A Study on the Collection Use of an Academic Library: Focused on the Analysis of Circulation Statistics of the A-Academic Library Users (대학도서관의 자료 이용에 관한 연구 - A대학도서관 이용자의 대출통계 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • The goal of this study is to analyze use patterns of library collections using circulation statistics of academic library user's. For this purpose, the 264,804 circulation-related data of A-academic library which were occurred between March 2012 and February 2013 were collected and used. Five patterns of common user group (undergraduate, graduate students, professors, staffs, the others users) are identified for this study. Gross circulation statistics was analyzed and compared for different users groups and for different subjects. And based on these analysis results, author understood degree of collection use by subject, degree of collection use by user groups, latest materials preference in collection use by subject, latest materials preference in collection use by user groups.

  • In this paper, we address the Bayesian hypotheses testing for the shape parameter of weibull model. In Bayesian testing problem, conventional Bayes factors can not typically accommodate the use of noninformative priors which are improper and are defined only up to arbitrary constants. To overcome such problem, we use the recently proposed hypotheses testing criterion called the intrinsic Bayes factor. We derive the arithmetic and median intrinsic Bayes factors and use these results to analyze real data sets.

  • We usually use two techniques(influence function and local influence) for detecting outliers. But, we cannot use these difficult techniques in elementary industrial statistics course for college students. We can use some simple graphical methods(box plot, dandelion seed plot, influence graph and cumulative deletion plot) for univariate and bivariate outlier detection and outlier effect in elementary industrial statistics course for college students.

  • We first derive the Fisher information identity in order statistics in terms of the hazard rate by considering the Fisher information identity in terms of the hazard rate (Efron and Johnstone, 1990). Then we use the identity and show an interesting and useful result that some identities and recurrence relations for the Fisher information in order statistics can be directly obtained from those between the c.d.f.s of order statistics.
