Objectives : This study is to report the effects of Bangkibokryeong-tang(Fanjifuling-tang(BBT)) on stroke patient with Urinary tract infection.(UTI) Methods : A stroke patient diagnosed as UTI was treated with BBT (防己茯笭湯) at one-month intervals. We observed body temperature, amount of urine and recorded photographs of any changes during the treatment period. Treatment efficacy was assessed using urinary analysis. Results : After the treatment, there was improvement in urine analysis. And the symptoms of UTI and her conditions got better. Conclusion : The report suggests that BBT is effective in controlling various symptoms related to UTI with antibiotic resistance on stroke patient.
Urinary tract infection(UTI) is one of the common complications in stroke patients. As it has negative effect on the recovery of stroke, it should be cured out immediately. But antibiotics might cause some adverse reactions such as diarrhea, eruption, anorexia, nausea and vomiting. so there have been several reports about treating urinary tract infection with Traditional Korean Medication. We treated a 54-year-old male patient with cerebral hemorrhage, who had had neurogenic bladder after stroke and had been urinated by intermittent catheterization. About 10 days later, he could void by himself without catheter, but showing the symptoms of UTI; Voiding pain, hematuria and yellowish pus. The pus culture grew Staphylococcus spp., which was resistant to most of antibiotics except vancomycin and teicoplanin. Based on accompanying symptoms of intermittent dizziness, headache, insomnia, nocturnal sweating, weak pulse, red tongue and urinary problem, we differentiated him as the deficiency of Yin of the Kidney[腎陰虛] and treated with Gagamyookmijihwang-tang (Jia-Jian-Liu-Wei-De- Huang-Tang), which improved his urinary symptoms and other general conditions without any side effect. In next follow-up culture, there was no pathogen. We conclude that Traditional Korean Medicine based on differentiation is useful in the treatment of urinary tract infection.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of routine meatal care on the reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (UTI). The study was carried out on 30 patients with foley catheters in an intensive care unit of a general hospital from September 30 to April 1, 1998. Participants were both male and female. Data were collected from each patients by urinary specimen obtained with aseptic collection technique at the 3rd and the 7th day of the experiment after giving daily mental care with 10% betadine for periods ranging from 1st to 7th day to the experimental group but not to the control group. The results are as follows : 1. The rate of urinary tract infection within the experimental group was 0.0%, at the 3rd day of the experiment and 20.0% at the 7th day, but that of the control group was 20.0% at the 3rd day and 7% at the 7th day. There was a significant difference in urinary tract infection rate between the two groups at the 3rd day but no significant difference at the 7th day. 2. In the control group, the rate of UTI was 0.7% for male and 13.3% for female at the 3rd day, and 6.7% for male and 40% for female at the 7th day. In the experimental group, the rate of UTI was 6.7% for male and 0.0% for female at the 3rd day and 13.3% for male and 20% for female at the 7th day of experiment. There was a no significant difference between male and female. 3. By comparing the rate of UTI to the length of time the urinary catheter was in place, the longer the catheter was in place the more significant was the rate of UTI. 4. Microorganisms isolated in the control group were bacteria for 7 cases and fungus for 3 cases but in the experimental group, only 2 cases of bacteria were isolated.
The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of Urinary Incontinence and lower urinary tract symptoms, to identify life style problems for UI of Women in anIsland. The sample consisted of 88 women in an island, a urinary symptom questionnaire developed by Jackson, et. al. and a demographic questionnaire were used to collect the data. The results of study were as following. 1. It was reported that the subjects have experienced UI and various lower urinary symptoms such as stress incontinence, nocturia, intermittency, abnormal stream, feeling of incomplete emptying and also they have experienced some degree of 'bother' 2. It was reported that the subjects have experienced various life style problems for UI 3. There was significant relationship between age and urgency (p=0.0262), bladder pain (p=0.0268), abnormal strength of stream (p=0.0074), inability to stop midstream (p=0.0026), and ability to perform daily tasks (p=0.0488), 4. There was a significant relationship between the number of discharges and urgency (p=0.0273), abnormal strength of stream (p=0.0307), and inability to stop midstream (p=0.0122). 5. There was a significant relationship between menopause and bladder pain (p=0.0020), abnormal strength of stream (p=0.0245), and inability to stop midstream (p=0.0002). 6. There was a significant relationship between the degree of experiences for lower urinary tract symptoms and life style behavior. Therefore, based on the results, a developing and carrying out of adequate UI care program is needed.

Purpose: To analyze data from an observational, prospective, cumulative registry study in 805 hypogonadal men stratified by mild or moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) according to International Prostate Symptom Score. Materials and Methods: A total of 412 men underwent testosterone therapy (TTh) with injectable testosterone undecanoate, 393 men served as untreated controls. Measures of urinary function, anthropometric and metabolic parameters were performed at least twice per year. Results: Data from 615 men with mild LUTS (253 treated, 362 untreated) and 190 with moderate-to-severe LUTS (159 treated, 31 untreated) were available. During a follow-up period of 8 years a significant improvement of LUTS was noted for all TTh-patients whereas the control-groups showed deterioration or fluctuation around initial values. Despite advancing age, TTh fully prevented worsening of symptoms. In parallel, a considerable improvement of anthropometric parameters, lipids and glycemic control, blood pressure, C-reactive protein, and quality of life was found. Moderate-to-severe LUTS was associated with worse cardiometabolic risk profile at baseline as well as worse cardiovascular outcomes during follow-up in comparison to mild LUTS. Effect size of TTh was more pronounced in men with moderate-to-severe than with mild LUTS. Conclusions: Correcting hypogonadism by TTh is highly effective and safe for improving LUTS in hypogonadal men. TTh may also improve cardiometabolic risk and major adverse cardiovascular events.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), evaluate factors affecting LUTS among community-dwelling older adults, and provide basic data for a community-based LUTS management program. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to November 2010 by using a structured questionnaire. Participants were 157 individuals recruited from 5 community senior centers. Results: The mean LUTS score of the older adults was 9.4 (International Prostate Symptom Score range 0-35). For each LUTS (range 0-5), nocturia was the highest (2.3). Of all older adults, 24.8% had experienced urinary incontinence more than once a month during the past 6 months. Urinary incontinence was found to be an important factor associated with LUTS. Conclusion: A community-based management program for both LUTS and urinary incontinence in community-dwelling older adults should be implemented.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise(PFME) in women with urinary incontinence (UI) after ischemic stroke. Methods : Thirty women were divided into two groups by randomly Experimental Group(15 subject) and Control Group(15 subject) in a single blinded, randomised study. Experimental Group was conducted for the 6-weeks PFME program and had a structured training program for 60 minutes, 3 days per week and they were encouraged to PFME at home seven days for a period of 6weeks. They were measured by questionnaire of urinary symptoms and perineometry. Results : A significant improvement in pelvic floor muscle strength and lower urinary tract symptom was also demonstrated within the Treatment Group(p<.05), but not in the Control Group. Conclusion : PFME program had a significant effect in women with UI after stroke measured by pelvic floor muscle strength and lower urinary tract symptom.
This study was performed in order to evaluate the risk factors for nosocomial urinary tract infection and the frequencies of organisms isolated, and to provide the epidemiologic and basic data of hospital acquired urinary tract infection in intensive care unit. A prospective analysis was performed with 1,235 urine samples following urinary bladder catheterization in 569 patients, who had no evidence of UTI at the time of catheter insertion, admitted to intensive care unit in Pusan P hospital between June 1997 and May 1998. To identify risk factors for UTI, clinical characteristics of infected patients were analyzed. We analyzed these data by percentage, chi-square and odd ratio. Obtained results were as follows: A total of 569 patients (male 341 and female 228) were an average age of 50.8 years and catheterization of 8.04 days. Incidence of UTI was 16.1% (199/1,235) and The risk factors of UTI were duration of catheterization over 7 days, no use of systemic antibiotics, summer and female, and During the first 7 days these risk factors were no use of systemic antibiotics, summer, place of first catheter insertion (ICU) and type of intensive care unit (NSICU). A total of 220 the isolated strains were Gram negative rod 83 (37.7%), yeast like fungi 74 (33.6%) and Gram positive cocci 63 (28.6%). The common organisms isolated were Enterococcus faecalis 23 (10.5%), Serratia marcescens 19 (8.6%), Pseudomonu spp.17 (7.7%), E. ooh 16 (7.3%), Staphylococcus epidemidis 11 (5.0%) mdklebsiellapneumoniae 8 (3.6%). Therefore, in these results 199 of 569 (35%) patients in ICU with indwelling urinary catheter developed UTI. The risk factors for UTI are prolonged duration of catheterization, no use of systemic antibiotics, summer, and female.
An 8-year-old castrated male Shih Tzu dog (weighing 7.0 kg) presented with anemia and lethargy. Initial diagnosis indicated immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. During therapy, a secondary urinary infection, probably due to the immune suppressive therapy, was diagnosed. Subsequent diagnostic tests, including urinalysis and urine culture, indicated candidal cystitis. Despite ketoconazole therapy for candidal cystitis, the dog died suddenly. A Candida albicans infection was confirmed upon postmortem evaluation. Prolonged immunosuppressive therapy might be the cause of this infection. This is the first case report describing a Candida albicans urinary tract infection accompanied by hemolytic anemia in a dog in Korea.
Objectives: This case report aims to report the clinical effectiveness of the combination treatment of Korean medicine on a post-laparoscopic myomectomy patient's lower urinary symptoms (LUTS). Methods: The patient who diagnosed with uterine myoma had Laparoscopic myomectomy. After the operation, the patient complained of dysuria, nocturia, frequent urination, urgent urination and urinary retention. The patient received combination treatment of Korean medicine during 14 days of hospitalization. The treatment included Ohrim-san, acupuncture, moxibustion, and pharmacoacupuncture. The effects were evaluated through the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS), Frequency-Volume chart, and 5-Level version of EuroQol-Five Dimension (EQ-5D-5L). Results: After the treatment, the clinical symptoms such as dysuria, nocturia, frequent urination, urgent urination, urinary retention were improved. Also, the quality of life was enhanced. Conclusions: This case report shows that the combination treatment of Korean Medicine with Ohrim-san may be effective for treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) after laparoscopic myomectomy.
