  • Since late 1990's the urban decline phenomenon has risen in most provincial cities in Korea. Many lively discussions have also risen about how to revitalize declined urban center. In small cities, especially resident participation is very important to revive their old vividness. The study then reviewed literatures published from 1995 to 2007 regarding resident participation in urban center revitalization for community reinvigoration. This study consists of four parts. The first part defined concepts of community and of resident participation, and included discussion about resident participation codes. In the second part, the problems about community formation and community facilities were scrutinized through preceding researches. The third and last parts suggested some propositions and strategies to draw resident participation into urban center revitalization.

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the structural characteristics of urban plant community and suggest restoration model of Quercus mongolica in the case of Korean national Capital Region. The investigation areas were selected from urban area of Mt. Nam at Chung-Gu, suburban areas of Mt. Bong at Eunpyoung-GU, Mt. Sungju at Buchon City and non-urban areas of Mt. Suri at Kunpu City and Mt. Chonma t namyangju-City. After the main study field had been classified into the evaluation of the ecological characteristics and the modeling of the vegetation. We analyzed to evaluate the ecological characteristics of the forest structure -- successional stage, naturalness, multi-layer structure of the forest and species diversity, and the plant community structures. We have proposed vegetation restoration model based on the selection of proper plants, the number of individuals, diameter short area of breast height, the shortest distance between plants in non-urban area. As for successional stage, It was judged that the ecological succession may not be followed like the present stage of the surveyed areas in urban, suburban and non-ruban areas. As for the retention of naturalness and multi-layer structures of vegetation, In Quercus mongolica community, Robinia pseudo-acacia and Ailanthus altissima occurred in each layers at Mt. Nam, Mt. Bong and Mt. Sungju, and Eupatorium rugosum occurred in herbaceous layer at Mt. Nam. Consequently, the ecological restoration plan following the structure of the vegetation in Mt. Chonma seemed to be advisable in Q. mongolica community, there were less number of species and individuals in urban areas than those of non-urban areas. Planting of trees following the simulated native plant community of non-urban areas seemed to be required to promote the plants in urban areas. Considering the number of individuals up to three layers in each 400$m^2$ area, it was composed of twenty nine in canopy layer, forth nine in understory layer, 367 in shrub layer and 33.7% herbaceous ground cover in the Q.mongolica community. The suggested restoration model in this study is nan applicable model for the introduction in the cities, and this study shows that continuous experiments and field investigation on this model should be performed in the future.

  • Currently, China's urban landscape is undergoing a gradual shift from incremental development to stock renovation. Furthermore, the planning and development objectives of urban communities have evolved from solely focusing on physical space construction to promoting sustainable development within a humanistic society. The current approach to community planning and construction, which emphasizes a singular dimension of residential life, overlooks the multifaceted aspects of community life and production. This oversight leads to a lack of attention to interpersonal relationships within the community, difficulties in establishing a connection between people and their environment, and numerous other issues. Consequently, this paper seeks to redefine the concept of sociality within community spaces by considering the continuum of time and space within communities. It aims to delineate the roles of "power" and "rights" within the community context, with a particular focus on everyday life, in order to reevaluate strategies and methods for fostering dynamic community development.

  • This study is practically focussed on the derivation of the formula of the reach of the catchment of urban community parks and the reached distance to the parks. The hypotheses for the formula are as follows. a. The catchment of urban community parks can be dependent on the quantitative characteristics that urban community parks have substanial factors : the potential residential population of the proximate community to a park, park visitor's day and mean usetime per year. b. The distance to the urban park is a decided variable which can be percieved quantitatively by the researchers among the exogenous variables concerned with the mean usetime of the urban community park. The data for the variables were collected from the statistics, and the surveys for 9 parks of 4cities(Seoul, Chong-ju, Su-Won, Chon-an) in Korea, which were divided into on-site samples and off-site ones in 1991. The data were collected by questionaire surveys. A total of 548 questionaires of off-site surveys were completed by the residents in the enticing area of the parks. A total of 1053 questionaires of on-site surveys were completed by the visitors of the parks. The research could attempt to derive a formula, which was concerned with the reach of the catchment of urban community parks and the reached distance to the parks. It is testified(R2>0.8) that the numbers of mean usetime per year should be related with the reached distance from a visitor's house to a proximate park. The formula is analogized with an exponential function: {{{{ Mean Usetime per year=f(x)=Ae-BK+Ce-DK ear, X is reached distance from a visitor's house to a proximate park. A,B,C and D are parameters. And, the differences of the reach of the catchment of the parks are not only testified with resulting from the differences of the exogenous variables of qualitative characteristics differences of the parks, but also divided separately into spatial ranges. This formula will be able to anticipate the visitor's numbers of a planned urban community park.

  • This study investigates the usage behavior and the perception of horticulturalists (horticultural activists) and simple users for urban community gardens. To this end, we surveyed 100 horticulturalists and 213 simple users. Questions in the survey are divided into five categories: 1) usage behavior of community gardens, 2) perception on the benefits of community gardens, 3) perception on the pros and cons of setting up community gardens, 4) willingness to pay for community gardens, 5) importance of specific benefits provided by community gardens. According to the survey, 95.0 percent of horticulturalists and 93.4 percent of simple users supported setting up community gardens. 58.0 percent of horticulturalists and 60.6 percent of simple users were willing to pay their residence tax for community gardens. And the annual membership fee plus resident tax of horticulturalists is 460,455 KW per person, which is 80.6 times more than willingness to pay of simple users. The results of this study can be used as basis data for valuing community gardens.

  • This study is to find out the proper planting and utilization plans for climbing plants in urban community gardens. As a result, a majority of respondents claimed that it is acceptable to plant climbing plants in their plots of the community garden. In particular, those who have experiences with gardening activities responded that climbing plants could be allowed in the community gardens. There was a high tendency to use climbing plants in community gardens for aesthetic or ornamental use and for creating fences. Many respondents also claimed that the climbing plants should be planted outside or on the edge of the garden and that the plants should not cross over to other plots. Those who responded that the climbing plants should be planted outside or on the edge of the community garden wanted to use the plants for aesthetic or ornamental use. Those who wanted to use the plants for creating shades responded that the plants should be planted outside or on the edge of the garden. For proper planting of climbing plants in the community garden, it is necessary to consider the height of the vertical plant support depending to the gap between the plots in the community gardens, the shape and color of flowers, leaves, and stems for aesthetic use, and mixing of plants for the duration of the shade period. Accordingly, introduction of climbing plants can be considered to increase the diversity of plants in urban community gardens.
