  • A smart city utilizes data collected from various sensors through the internet of things (IoT) and improves city operations across the urban area. Recently substantial research is underway to examine all aspects of data that requires for the smart city operation. Atmospheric data are an essential component for successful smart city implementation, including Urban Air Mobility (UAM), infrastructure planning, safety and convenience, and traffic management. Unfortunately, the current level of conventional atmospheric data does not meet the needs of the new city concept. New and innovative approaches to developing high spatiotemporal resolution of observational and modeling data, resolving the complex urban structure, are expected to support the future needs. The geographic information system (GIS) integrates the atmospheric data with the urban structure and offers information system enhancement. In this study we proposed the necessity and applicability of the high resolution urban meteorological dataset based on heavy fog cases in the smart city region (e.g., Sejong and Pusan) in Korea.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which were used for military purposes, are gradually expanding their application fields under the influence of electrification and digitalization. Starting from the field of aerial imaging and Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission, nowadays the possibility of Urban Air Mobility (UAM), which transports passengers and cargo with drones, is widely under discussion. In order to occupy the rapidly growing global unmanned aerial vehicle market in advance, it is necessary to secure core technologies and develop key UAVs components based on the new technologies. In the navigation field, it is necessary to secure a precise position with guaranteed reliability and continuity, unrelated to the operating environments. The reliability and continuity should be secured in the algorithm level and in the H/W component levels also. In order to achieve this technical goal, the Ministry of Science and ICT has launched the 'Unmanned Vehicle Core Technology Research and Development Program' in 2019 to support the R&D on the unmanned vehicle technologies. In this paper, authors introduce the unmanned vehicle core technology research and development program to the related researchers. The authors summarize the backgrounds of the program and show the technological tasks and objectives on the sub-programs in the unmanned vehicle navigation program. We present the program schedules especially focused on the test and evaluation of the developed technologies and components.

  • The demand for e-VTOL aircraft is expected to be increased rapidly in the future as a means of urban transportation due to operating cost reduction, eco-friendliness and convenience of vertical take-off and landing using pilot-aids automation system. However, there are many technical hurdles to be solved in securing safety and certification which are essential for commercialization and urban operation. So far, there is no e-VTOL aircraft that has received type certificate and standard airworthiness certificate due to the technical problems and safety requirement differences with conventional aircraft. The e-VTOL aircraft certification should also meet the equivalent level of safety required by the current airworthiness standards, but there are existing problems in securing safety and meeting current standards. In this study, the e-VTOL's certification problems and technical limitations in satisfying the current standards are presented.

  • To ensure stable urban flight of electric vertical take-off and landing(eVTOL) aircraft, securing handling qualities and stability is essential. However, clear handling qualities standards for eVTOL aircraft, which have different characteristics from conventional manned aircraft, have not yet been established. Therefore, this paper identifies handling qualities evaluation criteria suitable for eVTOL aircraft based on the handling qualities standards for manned aircraft and designs a control system that meets the predicted handling qualities criteria through evaluation. simplified vehicle operation(SVO) control laws and stability and control augmentation system(SCAS)-based control laws were applied to the lift-cruise configuration eVTOL aircraft. Using control designer's unified interface(CONDUIT), it was confirmed that the level 1 standard was met, and to validate the system, assigned handling qualities evaluation was performed using handling qualities task elements(HQTE) in an X-Plane based simulation environment, resulting in the design of a control system that ensures handling qualities.

  • As the feasibility of urban air mobility (UAM) service using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft increases due to aircraft electrification, distributed propulsion, and artificial intelligence technologies, the U.S. and European aeronautical societies have been improving their certification system and regulations for the type certification of eVTOL. The improved certification system is expected to be ready in the near future, after the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) proposed the VTOL Special Condition, SC-VTOL in 2019. However, the current domestic certification system is still insufficient to properly respond to eVTOL. This study investigated the development trends of foreign eVTOL and certification systems, identified considerations to improve the domestic certification system, and proposed the measures for type certificates and type certificates validation of eVTOL based on the comparison between SC-VTOL and Korea airworthiness standards (KAS).

  • The azimuth generator and acquirer for UAV navigation is a system that helps UAVs to precisely determine their own azimuth while they are flying, similar to the DVOR of existing civil aircraft. This system consists of a ground base station that generates an azimuth signal by the Doppler effect and a signal acquisition terminal that receives the azimuth signal and derives the azimuth of the UAV. This study focuses on the implementation of C-band radio navigation in the 5.03 ~ 5.15 GHz terrestrial band to cooperate with GNSS navigation mainly used in existing UAMs. This is one of the navigation technologies that can fully satisfy the requirements of Title 14 of CFR-135.165. According to the FAA, the use of two or more independent navigation sources for aircraft is proposed for aircraft. In this study, the design and implementation of the core technologies of the system, such as azimuth signal generation, sine/cosine signal generation required for azimuth derivation, phase detection comparator of AM/FM signals, and blending signal generator for antenna switching for the Doppler effect, were performed using FPGA. The results of azimuth derivation for 1000 samplings were confirmed to satisfy the ICAO standard of ±3° with a maximum deviation of ±1.1°.
