Five on-road measurements were made using a mobile laboratory (ML) to characterize spatial and temporal air pollutant distributions over roads around a day-care center in urban area on 30 August 2013. Fixed monitoring was also done near the day-care center using the ML during the periods between on-road measurements. On-road air pollution monitoring route was classified into seven sections and three zones to identify severe polluted roads among many roads having different traffic volumes and directions. Typical pollutants emitted from vehicles such as $NO_x$, black carbon, particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and submicron particles including nanoparticles were monitored using real-time instruments. Peak concentration episodes were frequently observed during the on-road measurements and most peaks were simultaneously monitored at four pollutants. Colored on-road air pollution map for each pollutant provides an insight on spatial air pollution distribution, showing heavily polluted roads and sections. Average on-road $NO_x$ concentration of each run was similar to that monitored at the nearest roadside air monitoring station.
To determine the size distributions of water-soluble inorganic ionic species (WSIS) in roadside aerosols, sampling experiments were carried out in the urban roadside area of Jeju City on August 2018 and January 2019 by using the eight-stage cascade impactor sampler. The mass of roadside aerosols were partitioned at 57% in fine fraction, 36-37% in coarse fraction, and 6-7% in giant fraction, regardless of summer and winter. The mass concentrations of WSIS except for Na+ and SO42- in roadside aerosols were higher in winter than in summer. The size distributions of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Cl- were characterized by bimodal types with coarse particle mode peaking around 3.3-4.7 ㎛ and 5.8-9.0 ㎛. The size distributions of NO3- and K+ shifted from a single fine mode peaking around 0.7-1.1 ㎛ in winter to bimodal and/or trimodal types with peaks around coarse mode in summer. SO42- and NH4+ showed a single fine mode peaking around 0.7-1.1 ㎛. The MMAD of roadside aerosols was lower than that of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Cl-. Based on the marine enrichment factors and the ratio values of WSIS and the corresponding value for sea water, the composition of roadside aerosols in Jeju City may be practically affected by terrestrial sources rather than marine source.
The urban model inter-comparison study (UMICS) was conducted in order to improve the performance of air quality models (AQMs) for simulating fine particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$) in the Greater Tokyo Area of Japan. UMICS consists of three phases: the first phase focusing on elemental carbon (UMICS1), the second phase focusing on sulfate, nitrate and ammonium (UMICS2), and the third phase focusing on organic aerosol (OA) (UMICS 3). In UMICS2/3, all the participating AQMs were the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ) with different configurations, and they similarly overestimated $PM_{2.5}$ nitrate concentration and underestimated $PM_{2.5}$ OA concentration. Various sensitivity analyses on CMAQ configurations, emissions and boundary concentrations, and meteorological fields were conducted in order to seek pathways for improvement of $PM_{2.5}$ simulation. The sensitivity analyses revealed that $PM_{2.5}$ nitrate concentration was highly sensitive to emissions of ammonia ($NH_3$) and dry deposition of nitric acid ($HNO_3$) and $NH_3$, and $PM_{2.5}$ OA concentration was highly sensitive to emissions of condensable organic compounds (COC). It was found that $PM_{2.5}$ simulation was substantially improved by using modified monthly profile of $NH_3$ emissions, larger dry deposition velocities of $HNO_3$ and $NH_3$, and additionally estimated COC emissions. Moreover, variability in $PM_{2.5}$ simulation was estimated from the results of all the sensitivity analyses. The variabilities on CMAQ configurations, chemical inputs (emissions and boundary concentrations), and meteorological fields were 6.1-6.5, 9.7-10.9, and 10.3-12.3%, respectively.
Dry deposition fluxes for $SO_2$, particulate sulfate, nitrate, ammonium and $HNO_3$ were estimated in urban area for the time period January$\sim$ October 2005. Fluxes were generated using atmospheric concentration data collected both in Acid Deposition and Air Quality Monitoring Networks, and deposition velocities computed by combining land-use data with meteorological information. The resulting annually averaged $SO_2$, $NO_3$, and aerosol deposition velocities were found to be 0.4 cm/s, 4.3 cm/s and 0.1 cm/s, respectively, and thus deposition rates were 4.4 mg/$m^2$. day for $SO_2$, and 5.4 mg/$m^2$ . day for $NHO_3$, and particulate sulfate, ammonium and nitrate recorded 1.0 mg/$m^2$ . day, 0.4 mg/$m^2$ . day and 0.4 mg/$m^2$ day, respectively. Maximum for in seasonal variation of monthly averaged deposition velocities occurred in summer in contrast to $HNO_3$ showing peak in spring. There was no significant variation for aerosol. The dry to total (wet and dry) deposition contributed about 40% for sulfur and 28% for nitrogen species in this study.
In this study, the characteristics of turbulent flow and collection efficiency for an one-stage electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with slit type collecting electrode for urban railway underground tunnels were obtained using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial code FLUENT 6.3 and lab-scale experiments. The electrostatic precipitator was operated under high gas velocity(3~12m/s). Five different designs of collecting electrode, flat plate-type and a slit-type of 3mm, 5mm, 7mm and 10mm slit width and four various gas velocity(3, 6, 9, and 12m/s) were used and applied. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model in CFD commercial code FLUENT 6.3 was used for flow simulation. The flow simulation results showed that the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was higher than slit-type under all gas velocity conditions and also the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was increased continuously, but in case of slit-type was maintained at constant range. And, the turbulent intensity was decreased according to increasing of slit width. The experimental results showed that the collection efficiency of slit-type was higher than flat plate-type under all gas velocity conditions. And, over 6m/s gas velocity condition, the collection efficiency of 5mm and 7mm was highest, when compared to 3mm and 10mm.
As a large city advanced, the urban environment is becoming an issue. The contribution of vehicle emissions in air pollutants was very high according to the clean air policy support system (CAPSS). In order to improve the air quality in large cities, it is necessary to establish improvement measures by sources, analyzing the air quality of roadside. We divided Bucheon city into 4 regions to investigate the roadside pollutants of each district using the mobile laboratory (ML) and air quality monitoring station (AQMS). ML was used to measure pollutants emitted from vehicles and AQMS data was used as a comparison group of ML data. As a measurement result of pollutants in the roadside, the concentration of air pollutants in industrial & engineering complex area was the highest and concentration of air pollutants in residential & forest complex area was lower. By street, Bucheon-ro, Sinheung-ro, Sosa-ro, and Gyeongin-ro were identified as high concentrations. Therefore, further researches on preparing management measures for roads in the hot-spot area are needed.

A multi-spectral photometer was set up as an NASA/AERONET site at Kinki University campus in Higashi-Osaka in 2002 for measuring urban aerosols. In addition, the SPM-613D (Kimoto Electric) commenced measurement of suspended particles matter (SPM) as $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ on March 15, 2004 at the same AERONET site. The obtained results revealed that the poor air quality of the Higashi-Osaka site is due not only to anthropogenic particles from local emissions, such as diesel vehicles and chemical industries, but also to dust particles brought from continental desert areas by large scale climatic conditions. To understand the characteristics of background atmosphere over Higashi-Osaka, we examined the relationship between $PM_{2.5}$ concentration and aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at a wavelength of 0.87 μm based on AERONET data for background atmosphere (AOT<0.2). We obtained a linear regression line between AOT and $PM_{2.5}$ concentration. Using the linear relationships between AOT and $PM_{2.5}$, we show ground-level concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ of background atmosphere from Terra/MODIS satellite measurements.
Measurement of concentration and size distribution of TSP, ammonium, nitrate and sulfate were made from Mar., 1991. to June., 1992 in Seoul. The seasonal variation of concentration and size distribution of aerosols has been investiated. Aerosol were collected and size frationated by Andersen air sampler. Size classified samples were extrated with deionized water and analyzed for ammonium, nitrate and sulfate by ion chromatography. As the results of measurement, the average of concentration and MMAD(mass median aerodynamic diameter) were $118.58 \mu g/m^3$, and $2.77 \mu m$ for TSP, $1.92 \mu g/m^3$ and $1.35 \mu m$ for ammonium, $1.34 \mu g/m^3$ and $1.58 \mu m$ for nitrate, $8.52 \mu g/m^3$ and $2.15 \mu m$ for sulfate. The Seasonal variation of concentration and size distribution was observed for ammonium, nitrate and sulfate. The concentration peak of TSP was observed in coarse particles in spring and observed in fine particles in winter. The concentration's distribution of TSP, ammonium, nitrate and sulfate was observed bimodal type during all season.
Paved road dust emissions were investigated 14 times on 12 main roads in Seo-Cho Gu, Seoul, Korea by vehicle-based mobile sampling system(Road Dust Monitoring System) during September to December 2011. Also, fourteen heavy metals present in the dust samples were analyzed by ICP. ICP analysis showed that one of major source of the road dust would be urban construction. A large amount of silt was found, which might be originated mainly from building construction and open beds of trees. Trace element and pollution indices of heavy metals(Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) on the roads adjacent to the commercial area had higher concentrations than those on the roads adjacent to the construction and residential areas because of traffic density and heavy traffic.
In an effort to characterize temporal and spatial variability of $PM_{10}$ and to quantitatively estimate contribution of sea salt aerosol to $PM_{10}$ mass in Busan area, twenty four-hour averaged concentration of $PM_{10}$ were measured in two distinct areas, Gwaebeopdong(inland) and Dongsamdong(seashore), Busan for summer and fall, 2007. It was found that sea salt accounted for 2.9% and 9.5% of $PM_{10}$ mass in Gwaebeopdong and Dongsamdong, respectively for the study period, indicating that contribution of sea salt to $PM_{10}$ mass and total ion concentration in seashore area were consistently higher by a factor of three compared to inland area. Temporal analysis suggested that sea salt contributions to $PM_{10}$ in Dongsamdong were higher in summer due to the southerly sea breeze while there was no significant fluctuation of sea salt contribution for the summer and fall months in Gwaebeopdong. Sea salt enrichment factors($EF_{sea}$) of $K^+$$Ca^{2+}$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ (>10) indicated major contributions from anthropogenic sources and EFs of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ exhibited strong association with oceanic origins for both areas.
