The aim of tins study is to compare the travel time of urban railway with that of arterial roads in the Seoul metropolitan area, focusing on the five main railways and arterials - Ilsan, Bundang, Kwacheon, Kyoungwon, and Kyoungin in order to make suggestions about improvements of railways. We found that the travel times of railways and arterials are about one and a half hour and an hour respectively, also the ratio of railway travel time to arterial travel time is 1.34 at peak and 1.58 at off-peak. We conclude that the competitiveness of the railroads is lower than the arterials. It will be necessary that we research the ways to improve the service of railways and investment ranking among the five main railways.
Generally an urban freeway means a primary arterial which provides road users with a free-flow speed, except for ramp junctions during rush hours. However, most road users suffer from traffic congestion in the basic segments as well as in the ramp junctions of urban freeway during rush hours, because most road users prefer urban freeways to local roads in the urban areas. This study then intends to analyze lane traffic characteristics of urban freeway basic segments having more freight vehicles during rush hours, find the lane showing a high correlation with the segment speed between lane speeds, and finally suggest a segment-speed predictive model by the lane speed of urban freeway basic segments during rush hours.

Development is given for an analytical approach that can investigate parameters characterizing road network geometry. A grid transportation network having a hierarchy structure is considered on a homogeneous and isotropic urban plane in which trip origins and destinations are uniformly dispersed and the trip length distribution is independent of the location of the origin. The object is to find the optimal spacings between urban arterials so as to minimize the sum of travel and construction costs, subject to the hypothesis that a trip assignment follows the Wardrop's first principle. The proposed approach is not the genera method for determining an efficient network layout, but can be used as basic concept for generating and evaluating urban road network alternatives. Given an O-D table and cost estimates the approach is able to outline at least in a qualitative sense the optimal spacings of urban arterial roads.

Road traffic noise causes considerable disturbance and annoyance in exposed inhabitants. Particularly, arterial road noise is a significant environmental problem in many urban areas in which higher traffic volume and higher car speed occur. Arterial road noise became the target of this investigation in Seoul, South Korea. Noise levels were measured at four points that were based on distance from roadside at the same measurement site and under the conditions as reported by the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in 1999. The average noise levels ($L_{eq,1h}$) of the arterial road was 80.3 dBA at 5 m, 77.4 dBA at 10 m, 73.7 dBA at 20 m, 70.9 dBA at 30 m. A comparison between 1999 and 2008's measurement values has shown that in 2008 noise level is up by about 1.5 dBA, traffic volume has increased by about 15.7%, while car speed has decrease by about 8%. The relationship between 2008' measured values and predicted values using the NIER Equation is low under 10 m from the roadside. The influence range of arterial noise is calculated at 26 m for road noise limits in daytime. In relation to the comparison between traffic volume and noise level, the equivalence in traffic volume (Light car+10xHeavy car) is higher than other variables.
Interchanges are passages for vehicle and pedestrians and a gateway to nearby facilities, and a place to stay of vehicle and Pedestrians. Interchange traffic must be able to navigate well for safety and convenience. Traffic safety and efficiency are influenced by the interchange. In this study, relative delays of vehicles are compared by changing traffic interchanges. the volume of traffic, the number of lanes, the rate of left turns vehicle on the interchanges of urban arterial roads. The object of this study is to compare Grade crossing interchange, Diamond interchange. Roundabout interchange. SPUI(Single Point Urban Interchange), Echelon interchange). Echelon interchange. By VISSIM Simulation, this study drew the relative delay value of every scenario and compared the delay value of each vehicle considering construction expenses. Through this comparison study, ideal interchange is dependent on the volume of traffic, the number of lanes, and the rate of left turns.
This study deals with the traffic accidents of circular intersections in Korea. The purposes are to comparatively analyze the characteristics by operational type, and to develop the models using the data of 82 intersections. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to modeling such the accidents as the roundabout and rotary in urban area. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the null hypotheses that the number of accidents are the same in both the urban and rural intersections, and roundabout and rotary in urban area, were analyzed to be rejected. Second, 3 accident models were developed, which were all statistically significant. The independent variables used in the above models are the ADT, number of approach lane, bus stop, parking facilities, and others. This study could be expected to give some implications to the traffic safety policy decision-making.
Traffic flow characteristics is analysed on eight multi-lane roads which are unsignalized in urban areas. Data of traffic flow rates by classification and average speed were gathered every ten minutes interval for twenty-four hours. Machine (NC-90A) was used to acquire the field data. The major purpose of this study is to build up speed-density models on urban arterial roads. Five different kinds of models were tested. Those models are Greenshields' model, Greenberg's model, modified Greenberg's model, Underwood's model and Drake's model. The modified Greenberg's model fits best at six points and the Greenshield's model fits best two points out of eight points. The breakpoint(Kb) of modified Greenberg's model is between 10 and 32 pcphpl. Capacity drawn from speed-volume relationships were appeared to be arround 2,000 and 2,200 pcphpl at the Hannam Bridge and the Hannam Overpass and 1,100 and 1,700 pcphpl at Namsan Tunnel(No1) and the beginning point of Gyeong-Bu Expressway.
Unlike the past, the elderly who are growing rapidly in Korea are called 'active seniors'. They prefer to live in urban silver towns despite high living cost and make their own new urban contents. The new urban contents that reflect the living characteristics of active seniors have an important impact on their choice of residential location. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the location characteristics of urban silver towns, which are preferred as the main residence of active seniors, based on the urban living contents of active seniors. The location characteristics of urban silver towns considering the urban living contents of active seniors can be classified 1) public transportation, 2) nearby arterial roads, 3) culture shopping facilities, 4) medical facilities, 5) apartment complexes, and 6) natural environments. Especially, the accessibilities of medical facilities, apartment complexes, and culture shopping facilities were the main characteristics of urban silver towns. The results of this study are expected to be helpful not only the location of urban silver towns, which is the urban new content of active senior, but also for the policy on housing for the elderly.

Urban freight system includes not just intra-urban freight movement but also inter-urban movement as well. Hence, to make Busan a hub of North-east asia freight movement it is necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for infrastructure expansion as well as improvement of freight system based on the present facility situation. This study identifies the status of freight facilities in Busan by establishing the freight related infrastructure Database(DB) utilizing Geographic Information System(GIS), and to enable planners and decision-makers to utilize the DB to develop a future plan. The DB includes port facilities, major and minor arterial roads, railroad lines and facilities, depots, center city business areas, and urban infrastructures which are related to the freight movements. The analyses show that major transportation facilities in Busan consist of roads, railroads, coastal transportation, and international transportation, and it was found that intermodal facilities are inadequate for freight system in Busan. The results of this study will be useful for freight experts and planners to develop a comprehensive freight system plan.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of C02 emissions by road before establishing a policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Method: As for the analysis method, the traffic volume and speed of the road were estimated using the traffic Assignment model targeting 27 arterial road axes in Incheon Metropolitan City. And, after estimating CO2 emissions by road axis by applying this, the characteristics of each group were analyzed through cluster analysis. Result: As a result of cluster analysis using total CO2 emissions, CO2 emissions by truck vehicles, and the ratio of truck vehicle emissions to total carbon dioxide emissions, four clusters were classified. When examining the characteristics of each road included in each group, it was analyzed that the characteristics of each group appeared according to the level of impact by CO2 emissions and truck vehicles. Conclusion: It is judged that it is necessary to establish a plan in consideration of CO2 emission characteristics for road CO2 management for greenhouse gas reduction.
