  • The purposes of this study are to analyze the higher education admission policy of France and to draw policy implications for Korea. For this study, literature reviews and interviews (face-to-face, email, telephone) were adopted for main research methods. The major findings were as follows: First, baccalaur?at diploma is necessary for higher education admission in France but each higher education has different admission policy according to their legal status. University has open enrollment policy and has no student selection process. Other higher institutions such as grands ?coles select students based on students' academic achievements. Second, baccalaur?at is national diploma which shows successful conclusion of the upper secondary education and gives right of access to higher education. This diploma is awarded to candidates who have passed a series of standardized written and oral tests drawn up at national level (10/20points). Third, students' academic achievements in high schools are major criteria for admission for higher institutions which has student selection process. Fourth, entrance exams implemented at college level are various according to higher institution. Last, 'Admission Post-bac-APB' site is used to support and facilitate the whole admission process. Based on these findings, several policy implications were suggested.

  • This study was performed to determine the characteristics of particleboard made from three-months-old bamboo, (Phyllostachys nigra var henonis Stapf) grown in Damyang district, Korea. Total 60 particleboards were manufactured with 1% of liquid wax emulsion using urea-formaldehyde resin content 9%,11% and 13%, respectively. The particle boards consisted of three layers, in which face layer had the same proportion of a weight 25% of the particleboard each. And the core layer had a weight 50% of the board. The core layer and face layer had the particle dimension passing 6 mesh (3.35 mm), 12 mesh (1.70 mm), respectively. The study was carried out to determine the effect of the growing time of 3 months and 3 years on particleboard properties. The physical and mechanical properties of boards were measured and compared to the Korean standard (KS) requirements of particle boards. The results were as follows; 1. The longer the growing time, the higher the density of bamboo. Density of the upper part of bamboo showed higher than that of lower part. 2. Density and moisture content of the two particle boards did not show significant differences. Three-months-old bamboo particleboard gave higher thickness swelling than three-years-old bamboo particleboard. Bamboo particleboard passed the thickness swelling test of KS. 3. The static bending and internal bond strength of three-months-old bamboo particleboard were higher than those of three-years-old bamboo. Increase of resin contents in bamboo particleboard increased bending and internal bond strength, proportionally. Strength properties of bamboo particle board were above KS. 4. Formaldehyde emission of all the bamboo particleboards satisfied E2 level (5.0 mg/L) of KS F 3104.

  • This study purpose was to know the effects 30 aged females forehead ms by SUKI intervention(4weeks). Total tested group were 18 persons, It used for SUKI intervention of SUKI process C1, SUKI process C2, SUKI process C3, SUKI process C4 were adopted three times a week in 4 weeks. The research conclusion like this. EG was a significant difference in forehead ms. Therefore, to maintaining elasticity on forehead ms. showed as some research of SUKI intervention effects for the forehead ms(p<.05). In this study, even though limited, it was judged that wrinkles due to a decrease in elasticity of the forehead ms located on the upper surface of a woman's face in her 30s could have a profound effect on women's external appearance, so SUKI intervention was applied. In addition, the role of the elastic on the forehead ms was to suggest an alternative semester method that can effectively control the management of external appearance by managing which it suitable for the life cycle of women in their 30s. In conclusion, we hope that in the future, various experiments will be used as new research data on how to prevent females facial skin beauty and wrinkles and help improve elasticity of facial ms around the face.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the thermal protective function of firefighter clothes and gloves through real scale fire simulations. Methods: Firstly, the fire simulation by real scale flame was performed for firefighter clothes. A manikin equipped with firefighter clothes was directly exposed to flames which energy average is 84 Kw/m2. for 22 seconds. Heat flux gauges attached on the body measured surface temperature elevation. Secondly, we also performed the other fire simulation by hot plate exposure to firefighter gloves. Firefighter gloves with heat flux gauges exposed hot plate which temperature is 300℃ in both dry and moist conditions. Primary outcome was surface temperature change of manikin body (first simulation) and hand (second simulation) over times. Results: In the first flame simulation, the surface temperature of face and shoulders elevated more rapidly comparing with the other body surface area when initial period of flame shutter open. After 18sec of shutter open, the surface temperature of upper trunk elevated rapildy. After shutter closure, high surface temperature kept continuously on right side of face and left shoulder. In the second hot plate simulation, fingers and palms showed higher surface temperature than the other areas of hands in the both dry and wet conditions. Conclusion: This study suggests that the real scale flame enables firefighter clothes to lose their heat protective function suddenly after 18 seconds. Additionally, the protective function of firefighter gloves were relatively weaker in the palmar side of fingers than the other parts of hand. There should be additional study for evaluate thermal protection performance of firefighter clothes. And, further effort for reinforce palmar side of fingers of firefighter gloves should be done.

  • We report a case of generalized dystonia that developed from oromandibular dystonia and improved following Korean medicine treatment. The patient was hospitalized for 18 days and treated with herbal medicine, mainly Hyeongbangsabaek-san and Soyangbowi-tang, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. To evaluate the clinical effects of the treatment, we used the Unified Dystonia Rating Scale (UDRS) and Global Dystonia Severity Rating Scale (GDS) and checked dyskinesia occurrence in a diary recorded by the patient's guardian. After 18 days of hospitalization, the UDRS for the trunk, upper extremities, and lower face improved by more than 50%, and the GDS for the whole region, except the larynx and lower face, also improved. In addition, the maximum duration of dystonia decreased from 6 hours to 3 hours, and the pain and numbness associated with dystonia disappeared. This case suggests that Korean medicine treatment is effective in treating generalized dystonia.

  • The most effective modality for cold application and the length of the application have not been determined despite many studies about the use of cold. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the most effective modality among three methods of cold application, the most effective length of time for the application and the continuing effect after each type of cold application. Thirty adult patients admitted to medical and neurosurgical unit and with high fever (above 38.2 ℃) were assigned randomly to each of three cold ap-plication methods : (a) ice bag: (b) cold compress; and (c) tepid water sponge bath. Each method was applied to the whole anterior surface except the face and neck with the patient in the supine pos-ition. Rectal temperatures and skin temperatures (mid chest, upper arm, thigh and leg) were measured be-fore each application and every 10 minutes during ,each application for a period of 60 minutes. They were also measured every 10 minutes for 30 minutes after each cold application was finished. The experiments were carried out from Dec. 22. 1992 through Feb. 26, 1993. The data were analysed using means, ANCOVA Sheffe test and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The results of this study are as follows : 1. There were no significant differences among the three cold application methods in the reduction of body temperature, 2. Among the ice bag, cold compress and tepid water sponge bath groups, the ice bag proved to be the most effective method for lowering skin temperature while the cold compress was least effective. 3. Both rectal and skin temperature continued to decrease during the 60 minutes of cold application, but the hunting phenomena was not observed at any of the cold application sites. 4. There were no significant correlations between mean rectal and skin temperatures. 5. Skin temperatures according to the cold application sites decreased to a range of 3.46℃ to 5.20℃ (mid chest), a range of 4.48℃ 4.96℃ (upper arm), a range of 3.86℃ to 5.05℃ (thigh), and a range of 5.42℃ -7.12℃ (leg ). 6. In continuing effect after the cold applications were finished, rectal temperatures according to ice bag, cold compress and tepid sponge bath decreased to 0.29℃, 0.23℃ and 0.09℃ respectively, while the mean skin temperatures increased to 2.39℃ , 2.04℃ and 2.22℃ respectively. In this experiment the ice bag was the most effective modality for lowering skin temperature. when-ever cold is applied for systemic effect, the continuing effect of cold should be considered. The determination of the most effective length of time for cold application needs further study.

  • It has been well known that the splanchnic nerve block is effective for patients who suffer from intractable upper abdominal pain. However, it is unclear whether the effect of the splanchnic nerve block depends on varied alcoholic concentration. In this study, an attempt was made to use absolute ethanol on patients who recieved a splanchnic nerve block at Severance Hospital during the period from September l990 to April l991. The results are as follows; 1) Among the 33 patients, including 22 males and 1l females, the fifties and sixties were the major age groups. 2) Stomach cancer was the most common underlying disease(13 cases), with pancreatic can- cer next(9 cases). 3) The main locations of pain were the upper abdomen, epigastrium, and entire abdomen in decreasing order. 4) There were 17 cases who had had chemotherapy, and 1l cases of whom had had surgery before the splanchnic nerve block. 5) The volume of alcohol used was 12 ml bilaterally. 6) Among the 33 patients, 15.2% required a second block within two weeks of the first block. One case required a third block. 7) The most common complications of splanchnic nerve block were hypotension(33.3%), occasional transient sharp burning pain, flushing of face, pain on injection site, nausea, vomiting, dyspnea, chest discomfort and diarrhea. 8) The supplemental block most commonly used was a continuous epidural block. It was used both as a diagnostic block and to afford relief from pain before the splanchnic nerve block was done. 9) The interval between the receiving the absolute ethanol block and discharge was within 2 weeks in l5 cases. But, in the patients with poor general health, the interval between the splanchnic nerve block and discharge prolonged. The above results suggest that bilateral splanchnic nerve block done with absolute ethanol after an effective test block with 1% lidocaine under C-arm fluroscopic control is satisfactory and reliable. Still, 26.6% of the patients received a repeat block within 2 weeks. Insufficient spread of ethanol due to its small volume seems to be a major factor in the repeat block. Minimizing the incidence of repeat block remains a problem to be solved.

  • To examine various aspects of Hg exchange processes, we measured Hg$^{\circ}$concentration gradients over soil surfaces in a residential area of Seoul during Sept. 1997. From these measurements, we found that Hg$^{\circ}$concentrations in lower(20 cm) and upper(200 cm) levels varied in the range of 3.15~14.38 (5.30$\pm$1.88: N=236) and 2.07~15.10ng/m$^3$(4.06$\pm$1.69: N=236), respectively. When our data were divided into emission and dry deposition, emission of Hg$^{\circ}$was overwhelmingly dominant (up to 98% in frequency) over dry deposition. The concentration gradients for emission and deposition events were 1.29$\pm$0.86(N=231) and -1.0$\pm$1.27ng/m$^3$(N=5), respectively. The observation of excessively high concentrations in both levels and development of strong gradients suggest that our study site be greatly affected by certain pollution sources of mercury. In face, those data were quite comparable to that had previously been observed from highly contaminated soil environs of Tennessee, USA. To provide some insights into the processes governing the Hg$^{\circ}$exchange processes, we have conducted correlation analyses between Hg$^{\circ}$data and other concurrently determined meteorological plus chemical data. In general, Hg$^{\circ}$concentrations of both levels exhibited similarly the existence of strong correlations with parameters like windspeed, temperature, and relative humidity. Although its concentration gradient data showed similarly strong correlations with meteorological parameters, they showed somewhat unique patterns in that their correlations with Hg$^{\circ}$concentration were noticeably stronger for the lower level than the upper level. To provide rough estimates of Hg$^{\circ}$fluxes in this study, we computed its flux using our gradient data and the predicted K values from previous studies. According to this approach, Hg$^{\circ}$emissions were generally in the range of 103$\pm$80(N=231), while its depositions, being scarcely found, were on the similar magnitude of -92$\pm$128ng/m$^2$/hr(N=5). The findings of excessive emission of Hg$^{\circ}$in residential area of Korea suggests that contamination of mercury be a significant process and hence be dealt more seriously.

  • The landscape systems in Korean island settlements can be recognized as results of ingabitants' ecological adptation to the isolated environment with the limited natural resources. Both the fishery dominant industry in island society and ecological nature of its environments seem to have influenced on inhabitants' environmental cognition as well as the physical landscape of island villages such as its location, spatial pattern in each village, housing form and so on. This study was done mainly by both refering to the related documents and direct observations in case study areas, and results of the study can be summarized as follows. 1. In general, the landscape of an individual island seems to take more innate characteristics of island's own, corresponding to the degree of isolation from mainland. That is, while the landscape of island in neighboring waters takes both inland-like and island-innate landscape character at the same time, the one in the open sea far from land takes more innate landscape character of all island's own in the aspects of village location, land use and housing density etc. 2. The convex landform of most islands brings about more centrifugal village allocation than centripetal allocation in most inland villages. And thus most villages in each island face extremely diverse directions different from the south facing preference in most inland rural villages. 3. Most island villages tend to be located along the ecologically transitional strip between land and sea, so called 'line of life', rather than between hilly slope and flat land as being in most inland village locations. So they are located with marine ecology bounded fishing ground ahead and land ecology bounded agricultural site at the back of them. 4. The settlement pattern of the island fishing villages shows more compact spatial structure than that of inland agricultural villages, due to the absolute limits of usable land resources and the adaptation to the marine environment with severe sea winds and waves or for the easy accessability to the fishing grounds. And also the managerial patterns of public owned sea weed catching ground, which take each family as the unit of usership rather than an individual, seem to make the villagescape more compact and the size of Individual residence smaller than that of inland agricultural village. 5. The folk shrine('Dand') systems, in persrective of villagescape, represent innate environmental cognition of island inhabitants above all other cultural landscape elements in the island. Usually the kinds and the meanings of island's communal shrine and its allocative patternsin island villagescape are composed of set with binary opposition, for example 'Upper shrine(representing 'earth', 'mountain' or 'fire')' and 'Lower Shrine(representing 'sea', 'dragon' or 'water') are those. They are usually located at contrary positions in villagescape each other. That is, they are located at 'the virtical center or visual terminus(Upper shrine at hillside behind the village)' and 'the border or entrance(Lower Shrine at seashore in front of the village)'. Each of these shirines' divinity coincides with each subsystem of island's natural eco-system(earth sphere vs marine sphere) and they also contribute to ecological conservation, bonded with the 'Sacred Forest(usually with another function of windbreak)' or 'Sacred Natural Fountain' nearby them, which are representatives of island's natural resources.

  • Purpose: Congenital midline upper lip sinus is a rare lesion. There are two postulates that can account for the formation of the upper lip sinus based on two major theories of the development of the face: the fusion theory and the merging theory. However, congenital midline lower lip sinus is very rarely reported and described. We report a case of a congenital midline sinus of the lower lip in a 6-year-old female. Methods: A 6-year-old girl presented with a nipple like swelling on the midline lower lip. Physical examination revealed about $5{\times}5$ mm protruding round mass with a just small opening that was non-tender to palpation. The mass was not associated with any skin changes. It umbilicated at the apex and contains a fistulous tract, discharging clear fluid. Only, simple radiologic finding shows bony spur on the lower one third of mandibular symphsis. Results: A small transverse ellipse is made around the opening and elevated mass with sharpe dissection. The tract is excised using the probe and dye as the guide. The tract was extended to periosteum of the lower one third of the mandible. The tract and involved periosteum were excised en bloc, and removed protrusion of the mandibular bone using diamond burr. Microscopic examination of the resected sinus revealed the fistulous tract itself, consisting of fibrous connective tissue covered with cornified stratified squamous epithelium, was observed in the center of the sample. In 6 months follow-up, This patient had a good result was obtained by the method of fistulectomy alone. Conclusion: Midline cranoifacial fistulas represent rare lesions resulting from abnormal fusion of embryologic structures. Our case report describes the excision of a congenital midline sinus of the lower lip in a 6-year-old female. This case represents the first report of a lower lip sinus presenting in a girl as a mass in the skin of the chin with extension to the midline of the mandible. However, the etiology of this rare congenital sinus remains obscure.
