Characteristic of Road Traffic Noise According to Road Vertical Alignment (도로 종단선형에 따른 도로교통 소음 특성 분석)

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to research the influence of road traffic noise by road slope through the analysis of the field road traffic noise and determine consideration of road slope in the case of appling active noise cancellation. METHODS: This study measures vehicle's noise by the NCPX method at the three field sections such as uphill, downhill, and flatland. Total sound pressure and sound pressure level by the 1/3 octave band frequency are calculated through the raw field data. Total sound pressure level is compared by ANOVA test and T test statistically. The results obtained are compared in accordance with the road slope and the progress of the uphill section. RESULTS : The noise characteristic of early, medium, and last parts of uphill was found to be consistent when the vehicle was travelling uphill section. The result of statistical test, it was shown that total sound pressures are not different each other. According to the comparison by the geometry, sound pressure of the uphill section was higher than those of the flatland and downhill section in high frequency band. By the result of statistical test, total sound pressure are different according to geometry in the case of high vehicle speed. In the comparison result by road slope, each sound pressure level was found to be consistent in total frequency. However, total sound pressure proportionally increased according to road slope. CONCLUSIONS: It is found that the effect of road slope on noise generation was little in this experimental sites.

The Effect of Arm Swing on Uphill Road Gait in Healthy Adults (팔 흔들기가 건강한 성인의 오르막길 보행에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of present study is to effect of arm swing on uphill road gait in healthy adults. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: This study was Participated in 15 healthy subjects. The subjects were allowed to walk uphill, about 10m from the line drawn on the floor. The subject stood at the starting line and started by pressing the start button with the signal "start", and I pressed Stop at the last incoming point. Walking with and without arm swing was measured twice in random draws. Results: Walking path with arm swing showed good results in walking path duration, cadence, speed, stride length, and Gait cycle duration rather than uphill walk without arm swing. Conclusion: As a results of this study, The arm swing is important in getting uphill.

Estimation of Asphalt Pavement Internal Behavior under Decreasing Truck Speed on Uphill Lanes (오르막 경사구간에서 중차량 속도감소를 고려한 아스팔트 포장구조체 내부거동 분석)

  • PURPOSES : This study estimated an asphalt pavement internal behavior under uphill lanes considering reducing speed of heavy truck on uphill slope. METHODS : Truck performance curve which has been adapted to "Korea Highway Capacity Manual" was analyzed. And asphalt pavement internal behaviors were estimated with Multi-layered elastic analysis using KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) dynamic modulus prediction equations. RESULTS : As a result, it is shown that when the standard truck drives 2.0 km at a speed of 80 km/h in 8% climbing slope, it's speed reduced to 25.4 km/h, at same time frequency in asphalt layer decrease to 67.2% and it's dynamic modulus degrades to 30.9%. Based on these results, internal behavior as decreasing vehicle speed on uphill lanes were estimated. CONCLUSIONS : From the results of Multi-layered elastic analysis, internal behavior showed that when the standard truck drives 2.0 km at a speed of 80 km/h in 8% slope on uphill lanes, vertical strain was increased to 44.4% at the bottom of surface course, and lateral tensile strain was increased to 20.5% at the bottom of base course.

Driving Information System of Bicycle by Using 3-Axis Acceleration Sensor (3축 가속도 센서를 응용한 자전거 주행정보 시스템)

  • In this paper, the driving information system of the bicycle has been studied by using the 3-axis acceleration sensor. The sensor module composed of 3-axis acceleration sensor and MCU(Microcontroller Unit) was mounted onto the handle of bicycle and the experiments were conducted on the flatland, uphill and downhill of bicycle road. Three axis acceleration values were converted to the pitch and roll angles, then four major compensation methods have been applied to achieve meaningful data for driving information system. The experimental results of pitch angles showed 2.46, -1.26, 7.79 degrees in case of flatland, uphill, downhill, respectively. When the steering handle turned to the left direction, roll angles showed -29.35, -41.67, -36.98 degrees at each road condition. With the right-turn, roll angles presented 20.05, 33.75, 24.44 degrees in case of flatland, uphill, and downhill, respectively. The pitch angle has been increased more than 40 degrees at stop mode. By using the change of pitch and roll angles, we could obtain the driving information system of bicycle successfully.

Development of a Fuel-Efficient Driving Method based on Slope and Length of Uphill Freeway Section (고속도로 오르막 구간의 경사도와 길이에 따른 연료 효율적 주행방법 개발)

  • In 2011, greenhouse gas emissions of transport sector were 85.04 million $tonCO_2eq$ and road emissions accounted for 95% of total emissions in the transport sector. There are few innovative technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions aside from eco-driving education and public relation program. Therefore, this paper focused on analyzing optimal acceleration by certain road grades and suggested fuel-efficient driving method for various uphill sections. Scenarios were established by driving modes. Speed profiles were generated by scenarios and speed variations. Each speed profile applied to Comprehensive Modal Emission Model and then each fuel consumption was estimated. Driving mode and speed variation that minimized fuel consumption were driven according to grade percent and uphill distance. When driving in the eco-friendly mode of the driving and speed variation, reduction rate of fuel consumption was evaluated by comparison between eco-driving and cruise control mode. When a vehicle drove under eco-driving mode at 100kph, 90kph and 80kph on uphill road, fuel consumptions were reduced by 33.9%, 30.8% and 5.3%, respectively.

  • As the micro-mobility market grows, the demand for route guidance, that includes uphill information as well, is increasing. Since the climbing angle depends on the electric motor uesed, it is necessary to establish an uphill road DB according to the threshold standard. Although road alignment information is a very important element in the basic information of the roads, there is no information currently on the longitudinal slope in the road digital map. The High Definition(HD) map which is being built as a preparation for the era of autonomous vehicles has the altitude value, unlike the existing standard node link system. However, the HD map is very insufficient because it has the altitude value only for some sections of the road network. This paper, hence, intends to propose a method to generate the road longitudinal slope using currently available data. We developed a method of computing the longitudinal slope by combining the digital elevation model and the standard link system. After creating an altitude at the road link point divided by 4m based on the Seoul road network, we calculated individual slope per unit distance of the road. After designating a representative slope for each road link, we have extracted the very steep road that cannot be climbed with personal mobility and the slippery roads that cannot be used during heavy snowfall. We additionally described errors in the altitude values due to surrounding terrain and the issues related to the slope calculation method. In the future, we expect that the road longitudinal slope information will be used as basic data that can be used for various convergence analyses.

Numerical study on the thermal performance characteristics of the stack system for FCEV (연료전지 자동차용 스택 시스템의 열적 성능 특성에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the heat transfer rate for evaluating the thermal performances of the stack thermal system using the commercial software. In order to perform this, the cooling performances of the stack system for fuel cell electric vehicle were tested under both driving road conditions including the general driving road and uphill driving road and operating conditions with and without of the air conditioning system. The heat transfer rate of the stack radiator for the stack system was increased with the increase of the inlet air flow velocity. The heat transfer rate of the stack radiator increased by 105.3% at the coolant flow rate of 20 l/min and 221.3% at the coolant flow rate of 120 l/min with the increase of the air flow velocity from 2 m/s to 10 m/s. $9.45^{\circ}C$ of inlet coolant temperature of the stack radiator at the severe driving condition of the slope of 8% and velocity of 50 km/h showed higher 85.3% than $5.1^{\circ}C$ of inlet coolant temperature at the general driving condition of the slope of 0% and velocity of 120 km/h. In addition, as the fuel cell electric vehicle with the air conditioning system operation was driving under severe uphill driving condition, the radiator coolant temperature for a stable stack operation could be exceeded over $70^{\circ}C$.

Analysis of Vehicle Noise Effect by Microphone Position and Road Geometry (도로 기하구조에 따른 차량 Microphone 위치별 소음 영향 분석)

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of study is to understand the characteristic of driving noise from the front and rear tire for effective active noise cancellation application. METHODS : As literature review, noise measurement methods were reviewed. Noise measurement conducted at three kind of section by road slope using CPX(Close Proximity Method). Noise data was compared by total sound pressure level and 1/3 octave band frequency sound pressure level. Also, each section was compared by T-test using SPSS. RESULTS : In the case of the uphill section, it was shown that the sound pressure level of the front tire at Sugwang-Ri and Sinchon-RI sections was higher than that of the rear tire in low and high frequency band. In the case of high slope section of Sangsaek-Ri, the sound pressure level of the front tire was higher than that of the rear tire in high frequency. Also, in the case of the downhill section, it was shown that the sound pressure level of the front tire at Sugwang-Ri and Sinchon-RI sections was higher than that of the rear tire in low frequency band. However, the sound pressure levels of both the front and rear tires were approximately the same in the high slope section of Sangsaek-Ri. The result of T-test showed that total sound pressures of the front and rear tires were not different from each other in the case of high slope and high speed. CONCLUSIONS: Road slope was not an important variable for effective active noise cancellation.

A Study on the Characteristics of Battery SOC Management for SUV Extended Range EV (SUV EREV의 주행평가를 통한 배터리 SOC 제어 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes system definition of the extended range EV and presents cruising strategy of EV mode and ER mode. Also high voltage battery strategic SOC could be indicated and compared depends on various generator working cycles. A C-segment SUV has been produced and carried out cruising test in order to validate on highway, city and hill climbing road. This paper shows advantages and disadvantages of SOC variation on each road environments and presents the strategies as the cruising test results. On the basis of the test result, this paper suggests future works and research directions for strategy of battery management to extended range EV.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Traffic Accident Severity on Freeway Climbing Lanes (고속도로 오르막차로 교통사고 심각도 영향요인 분석)

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to analyze factors affecting traffic accident severity for determining countermeasures on freeway climbing lanes. METHODS : In this study, an ordered probit model, which is a widely used discrete choice model for categorizing crash severity, was employed. RESULTS : Results suggest that factors affecting traffic accident severity on climbing lanes include speed, drowsy driving, grade of uphill 3%, gender (male offender and male victim), and cloud weather. CONCLUSIONS : Several countermeasures are proposed for improving traffic safety on freeway climbing lanes based on the analysis of crash severity. More extensive analysis with a larger data set and various modeling techniques are required for generalizing the results.
