A Navier-Stokes equation solver for incompressible viscous flows with free surface is developed and tested. This is based upon a fractional time step method and a non-staggered finite volume formulation for unstructured meshes. For time advancement scheme, Adams -Bashforth method for convective term and Crank-Nicolson method for diffusive term are applied. The interface between two fluids with different fluid properties is tracked with Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC) Volume-of-Fluid(VOF) methods. Computational results are presented for some test problems: the broken dam, the sloshing in a rectangular tank, the filling of a cylindrical tank.
In the present study, unsteady flow simulations of a variable geometry nozzle were conducted using a two-dimensional flow solver based on hybrid unstructured meshes. The variable geometry nozzle is used to achieve efficient performances of aircraft engines at various operating conditions. To describe the motion of the variable geometry nozzle, an algebraic method based on the basis decomposition of normal edge vector was used for the deformation of viscous elements. A ball-vertex spring analogy was used for inviscid elements. The aerodynamic data were obtained for a range of nozzle pressure ratios, and the validations were made by comparing the present results with available experimental data. The unsteady nozzle flows were simulated with an oscillating diverging section and a converging-diverging section. It was found that the nozzle performances are influenced by the nozzle exit flow characteristics, mass flow rate, as well as unsteady effects. These unsteady effects are shown to behave differently depending on the frequency of the nozzle motion.

Detailed flow of a shrouded tail rotor in hover is studied by using a compressible inviscid flow solver on unstructured meshes. The numerical method is based on a cell-centered finite-volume discretization and an implicit Gauss-Seidel time integration. Numerical simulation is made for a single blade attached to the center body and guide by the duct by imposing a periodic boundary condition between adjacent rotor blades. The results show that the performance of an isolated rotor without shroud compares well with experiment. In case of a shrouded rotor, correction of the collective pitch angle is made such that the overall performance matches with experiment to account for the uncertainties of the experimental model configuration. Details of the flow field compare well with the experiment confirming the validity of the present method.

A three-dimensional parallel Euler flow solver has been developed for the simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage interaction aerodynamics on unstructured meshes. In order to handle the relative motion between the rotor and the fuselage, the flow field was divided into two zones, a moving zone rotating with the blades and a stationary zone containing the fuselage. A sliding mesh algorithm was developed for the convection of the flow variables across the cutting boundary between the two zones. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the wake. A low Mach number pre-conditioning method was implemented to relieve the numerical difficulty associated with the low-speed forward flight. Validations were made by simulating the flows around the Georgia Tech configuration and the ROBIN fuselage. It was shown that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of complicated unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction phenomena.

An aerodynamic shape optimization technique has been developed for helicopter rotor blades in hover based on a continuous adjoint method on unstructured meshes. The Euler flow solver and the continuous adjoint sensitivity analysis were formulated on the rotating frame of reference for hovering rotor blades. In order to handle the repeated evaluation of the design cycle efficiently, the flow and adjoint solvers were parallelized using a domain decomposition strategy. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was adopted for the accurate capturing of the tip vortex. Applications were made for the aerodynamic shape optimization of Caradonna-Tung rotor blades and UH60 rotor blades in hover. The results showed that the present method is an effective tool to determine optimum aerodynamic shapes of rotor blades requiring less torque while maintaining the desired thrust level.
A conservative finite-volume numerical method for unstructured grids with the cell-centered method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by combining the attractive features of the existing pressure-based procedures with the advances made in unstructured grid techniques. This method uses an integral form of governing equations for arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedure to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. For both convective and diffusive fluxes the forms superior to both accuracy and stability are particularly adopted and formulated through a systematic study on the existing approximation ones. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are computed by using a linear reconstruction based on the divergence theorem. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent the pressure checkerboarding and a segregated solution strategy is adopted to minimize the storage requirements with the pressure-velocity coupling by the SIMPLE algorithm. An algebraic solver using iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient method is used for the solution of linearized equations. The flow analysis code (PowerCFD) developed by the present method is evaluated for its application to several 2-D structured-mesh benchmark problems using a variety of unstructured quadrilateral and triangular meshes. The present flow analysis code by using unstructured grids with the cell-centered method clearly demonstrate the same accuracy and robustness as that for a typical structured mesh.
A component-scale two-phase analysis code has been developed for a realistic simulation of two-phase flow transients in a light water nuclear reactor component. In the code, a two-fluid three-field model is adopted and the governing equations are solved on an unstructured mesh. For the numerical solution scheme, the semi-implicit method used in the RELAP5 code was selected, which has been proved to be very stable and accurate for most of practical applications. However, some modifications were needed for its application to an unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the modified semi-implicit numerical method for unstructured grid and the preliminary results of the calculations.

A moving mesh system is one of the critical parts in a computational fluid dynamics analysis. In this study, the RBF(Radial Basis Function) which shows better performance than hybrid meshes was developed to obtain the deformed grid. The RBF method can handle large mesh deformations caused by translations, rotations and deformations, both for 2D and 3D meshes. Another advantage of the method is that it can handle both structured and unstructured grids with ease. The method uses a volume spline technique to compute the deformation of block vertices and block edges, and deformed shape.
Two-dimensional steady flowfields generated by slot injection into supersonic flow are numerically simulated by the integration of Navier-stokes equation with two-equation $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. High-order upwind scheme is used on unstructured adaptive meshes. The numerical results are compared with experimental data in terms of surface static pressure distributions, the length of the upstream separation region, and the height of the Mach surface for steady flowfields with a Mach number of 3.71 and a unit Reynolds number of $5.83\times10^6/m$.

A unstructured tetrahedral mesh generation algorithm has been presented. To make better meshes in interior region using an advancing front technique, a connecting operator has been developed in addition to the existing operators. Before applying digging operators that generate new nodes inside of a meshing region, a connecting operator is employed that uses existing nodes which satisfy certain conditions for producing well-conditioned elements if possible. By introducing this new operator, tetrahedral meshing process becomes more robust and produces better quality of meshes.
