A numerical analysis of initial unsteady state flow and heat transfer in an enclosed cavity has been performed by the Modified QUICK Scheme. The stable QUICK Scheme which modified the coefficient always to be positive is included in this numerical analysis. The implicit method is applied to solve the unsteady state flow; between iterations the PISO (Pressure - Implicit with Splitting of Operators) algorithm is employed to correct and update the velocity and pressure fields on a staggered grid. The accuracy of the Modified QUICK Scheme is proved by applying fewer grid systems than those which Ghia et al. and Davis applied. The initial unsteady mixed convection in an enclosed cavity is analyzed using the above numerical procedure. This study focuses on the development of the large main vortex and secondary vortex in forced convection, the effects of the Rayleigh Number in natural convection and the relative direction of the forced and natural convection.
Experimental study was conducted to reveal the flow mechanism under rotating stall in an axial flow fan. For this study unsteady pressure was measured using high frequency pressure transducers mounted on the casing wall of rotor passage and total pressure fields were measured at the rotor upstream and downstream. The measured pressure signal was analyzed by Wavelet Transform and Double Phase Locked Averaging Technique. From the result of unsteady pressure field of the casing wall, one period of rotating stall was divided into three zones and the flow characteristics on each zone were described in detail. The pressure field was also analyzed in terms of the pressure distribution along pressure side and suction side of blade tip. From the result of total pressure fields at inlet and outlet of the rotor, the useful information on the characteristics of the stall cell in radial direction was provided.

Most of small air vehicles with moving wing fly at low Reynolds number condition and the reduced frequency of the moving wing ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. The physical phenomena over the wing dramatically vary with the reduced frequency. This study examines experimentally the effect of the reduced frequency at low Reynolds number. The NACA0012 airfoil performs sinusoidal pitching motion with respect to the quarter chord with the four reduced frequencies of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.76 at the Reynolds number $2.3{\times}10^4$. Smoke-wire flow visualization, unsteady surface pressure measurement, and unsteady force calculation are conducted. At the reduced frequency of 0.1 and 0.2, various boundary layer events such as reverse flow, discrete vortices, separation and reattachment change the amplitude and the rotation direction of the unsteady force hysteresis. However, the boundary layer events abruptly disappear at the reduced frequency of 0.4 and 0.76. Especially at the reduced frequency of 0.76, the local variation of the unsteady force with respect to the angle of attack completely vanishes. These results lead us to the conclusion that the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the reduced frequency of 0.2 and 0.4 are clearly distinguishable and the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics below the reduced frequency of 0.2 are governed by the boundary layer events.
Unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by a computational method. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer, and sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The computed fan performance is favorably compared with experimental data, and also indicates that the performance is not significantly altered by the random pitch effect at ${\phi}>0.4$. In the present study, the narrow-band noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random Pitch (type-A and-B) blades are compared by the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra, and their frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are also discussed.
In this study, the unsteady flow field induced by a high-speed train passing through a tunnel is numerically simulated by using an axi-symmetric Euler Equation. The modified patched grid scheme applied to a structured grid system was used to handle the relative motion of a train. The hybrid-dimensional approach which mixed 1D and axi-symmetric dimension was used to reduce the computation time and memory storage. By employing the hybrid-dimensional approach, a long tunnel as much as 5 km was able to be simulated efficiently. The results show that the maximum pressure rise in the tunnel by the entrance of the train is a function of both train speed and train-tunnel cross-sectional area ratio. The unsteady pressure fluctuation in the tunnel and around the train was also investigated in the real condition; Korean high-speed train on the Seoul-Pusan line.
The 3-dimensional unsteady compressible flows around the high speed train have been simulated for the train entering a tunnel and for passing another train. The simulation method employs the implicit approximation-factorization finite difference algorithm for the inviscid Euler equations in general curvilinear coordinates. A moving grid scheme is applied in order to resolve the train movement relative to the tunnel and the other train. The velo-city and pressure fields and pressure drag are calculated to study the effects of tunnel and the other train. The side directional force which is time dependent is also computed for the passing train. Pressure distribution shows that the compression wave is generated in front of the train noise just after the tunnel entrance and proceeds along the inside of tunnel.
In this paper, the unsteady Stokes problem is considered and also the pressure-correction method for the problem is described. At a fixed time level, we reduce the problem to two symmetric positive definite problems which depend on a time step parameter. Linear systems that arise from the problems are large, sparse, symmetric, positive definite and ill-conditioned as the time step tends to zero. Preconditioned problems based on an additive Schwarz method for solving the symmetric positive definite problems are derived and preconditioners are defined implicitly. It will be shown that the rate of convergence is independent of the mesh parameters as well as the time step size.
Three dimensional unsteady numerical calculations were performed to investigate unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow in an axial compressor. The first stage of the four-stage low-speed research axial compressor was examined. Since this compressor has a relatively large tip clearance, the unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow is induced. Through the results from the unsteady calculations, the process of the induced unsteady tip leakage flow was investigated. It was shown that the leakage flow that occurred at a rotor blade tip clearance affected the pressure distribution on the pressure side near the tip of the adjacent blade, thus caused the fluctuation of the pressure difference between the pressure side and suction side. Consequently, the unsteady tip leakage flow was induced at the adjacent rotor blade. The unsteady feature of the tip leakage flow was changed as the operating point was moved. The interface between the tip leakage flow and the main flow only affected the trailing edge region at the design point whereas the interface influenced up to the leading edge at the low flow rate point. As the flow rate decreased, additionally, it was seen that the vortex size of the tip leakage flow increased and the relatively large length scale disturbance occurred. On the other hand, using frequency analysis, it was shown that the unsteadiness was not associated with the rotor speed and was about 40% of the blade passing frequency. This feature was explained in the rotor relative frame of reference, and the frequency decreased as the flow rate decreased.
A new method to calculate the aeroacoustic pressure of a centrifugal fan that is used in a vacuum cleaner has been developed. The centrifugal fan consists of the impeller, the diffuser, and the circular casing. Due to the high rotating speed of the impeller and the small gap distance between the impeller and diffuser, the centrifugal fan makes very high noise levels at BPF and its harmonic frequencies. In order to calculate the sound pressure of a centrifugal fan, the unsteady flow field data is needed. This unsteady flow field is calculated by the vortex method. The sound pressure is then calculated by acoustic analogy. In this paper, only dipole term is considered in the equation. The noise generated by moving impeller and stationary diffuser is calculated separately. The predicted acoustic pressures agree very well with the measured data. The difference between the two is less than 4dB
The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with low aspect ratio. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's $\kappa$-$\omega$ turbulence model. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the shear layer mode" with large aspect ratio. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formul. The aero-acoustic wave analyzed with CPD(Correlation of Pressure Distribution).
