Tall buildings are often subjected to steady and unsteady forces due to external wind flows. Measurement and mitigation of these forces becomes critical to structural design in engineering applications. Over the last few decades, many approaches such as modification of the external geometry of structures have been investigated to mitigate wind-induced load. One such proven geometric modification involved the rounding of sharp corners. In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of rounded corner radii on the reducing the flow-induced loading on a square cylinder. We perform 3-Dimensional (3D) simulations for high Reynolds number flows (Re=1 × 105) which are more likely to be encountered in practical applications. An Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) method capable of capturing flow accurately at large Reynolds numbers is employed in this study. The IDDES formulation uses a k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for near-wall modelling that prevents mesh-induced separation of the boundary layer. The effects of these corner modifications are analyzed in terms of the resulting variations in the mean and fluctuating components of the aerodynamic forces compared to a square cylinder with no geometric changes. Plots of the angular distribution of the mean and fluctuating coefficient of pressure along the square cylinder's surface illustrate the effects of corner modifications on the different parts of the cylinder. The windward corner's separation angle was observed to decrease with an increase in radius, resulting in a narrower and longer recirculation region. Furthermore, with an increase in radius, a reduction in the fluctuating lift, mean drag, and fluctuating drag coefficients has been observed.
A sudden pressure drop caused by the pressure relief valve acts as a strong noise source and propagates the compressible pressure fluctuation along the pipe wall, which becomes a excitation source of Acoustic Induced Vibration (AIV). Therefore, in this study, the numerical methodology is developed to evaluate the reduction effect of compressible pressure fluctuation due to curved pipe in the pressure relief valve system. To describe the acoustic wave caused by density fluctuation, unsteady compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique, which is high accuracy numerical method, Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid scale model is applied. Wavenumber-frequency analysis is performed to extract the compressible pressure fluctuation component, which is propagated along the pipe, from the flow field, and it is based on the wall pressure on the upstream and downstream pipe from the curved pipe. It is shown that the plane wave and the 1st mode component in radial direction are dominant along the downstream direction, and the overall acoustic power was reduced by 3 dB through the curved pipe. From these results, the noise reduction effect caused by curved pipe is confirmed.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of various turbulence models on the aerodynamic noise of an air-conditioner (AC) indoor unit. The results from URANS (unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations with the standard k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ shear stress transport (SST) and Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence models were analyzed and compared with the noise data from the experiments. The frequency spectra of the far-field acoustic pressure were computed using the Farrasat equation derived from the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation based on the acoustic analogy model. Two fixed fan casings and the rotating cross-flow fan were used as the source surfaces of the dipole noise in the Farrasat equation. The result with the standard k-$\epsilon$ model showed a much better agreement with the experimental data compared to the k-w SST and S-A models. The differences in the pressure spectra from the different turbulence models were discussed based on the instantaneous vorticity fields. It was found that the over-estimated power spectra with the k-w SST and S-A models are related to the emphasized small-scale vortices produced with these models.

This paper presents computations of the dynamic derivatives of three dimensional flight vehicle configurations using CFD. The pitch dynamic derivatives are computed from the pitch sinusoidal motion, while the roll damping is computed based on steady state calculation using a non-inertial frame method. The Basic Finner and the SDM(Standard Dynamic Model) are chosen for the benchmark tests against other numerical and experimental results. For the flow calculations, a 3-D Euler solver that can be run both on the non-inertial frame and on the inertial frame is developed. A dual-time stepping method is applied for the unsteady time accurate simulations. A good agreement of pitch-roll dynamic derivatives with previously published numerical results and the experimental results is observed.

A RANS(Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) based numerical method is developed for the evaluation of ship resistance and self-propulsion performances. In the usability aspect of CFD for the hull form design, the field grid around practical hull forms is generated by solving a grid Poisson equation based on the hull surface grid generated from station offsets and centerline profile. A body force technique is introduced to model the effects of the propeller in which the propeller loads are obtained from potential flow analysis using an unsteady lifting surface method. The free surface is captured by using a two-phase level-set method and the realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. The hull attitude in vertical plane, i.e., trim and sinkage, is calculated by using a quasi-steady method and then considered in the computation by translating and rotating the grid system according to the values. For the validation of the proposed method, the numerical results of resistance tests for KCS, KLNG, and KVLCC1 and of self-propulsion test for KCS are compared with experimental data.

This work investigates the influence of water compressibility on pressure pulsations induced by rotor-stator interaction (RSI) in hydraulic machinery, using the commercial CFD solver ANSYS-CFX. A pipe flow example with harmonic velocity excitation at the inlet plane is simulated using different grid densities and time step sizes. Results are compared with a validated code for hydraulic networks (SIMSEN). Subsequently, the solution procedure is applied to a simplified 2.5-dimensional pump-turbine configuration in prototype with different speeds of sound as well as in model scale with an adapted speed of sound. Pressure fluctuations are compared with numerical and experimental data based on prototype scale. The good agreement indicates that the scaling of acoustic effects with an adapted speed of sound works well. With respect to pressure fluctuation amplitudes along the centerline of runner channels, incompressible solutions exhibit a linear decrease while compressible solutions exhibit sinusoidal distributions with maximum values at half the channel length, coinciding with analytical solutions of one-dimensional acoustics. Furthermore, in compressible simulation the amplification of pressure fluctuations is observed from the inlet of stay vane channels to the spiral case wall. Finally, the procedure is applied to a three-dimensional pump configuration in model scale with adapted speed of sound. Normalized Pressure fluctuations are compared with results from prototype measurements. Compared to incompressible computations, compressible simulations provide similar pressure fluctuations in vaneless space, but pressure fluctuations in spiral case and penstock may be much higher.
Nowadays, the world has suffered by natural disaster of climate change due to global warming. Korea has also faced with similar situation. To prevent these natural disaster, Four Major River Management has conducted. One of conducted content in Four Major River Management is the levee maintenance which classified into fill-up the inland, levee of reinforcement and so on. These maintenances may make the characteristics of groundwater flow change and affect to the levee safety (piping phenomenon). Therefore, analysis on groundwater fluctuation according to level of riverside and inland should be required. This study focus on levee of Hoe stream, which is connected to Nakdong river, and piping safety factor in the levee analyzed by using pore water pressure. Besides, groundwater fluctuation, which is depended on level of riverside and inland, is simulated by using the SEEP/W (2D ground water model). This simulation considered steady flow and unsteady flow. As a result, piping safety factor increased due to rising the inland level. Piping safety factor of riverside was effected by only river water level. Therefore, external levee factor considering inland level raising and suitable control of river water level is need to increase piping safety factor.

In the present study, aerodynamic load analysis for a floating off-shore wind turbine was conducted to examine the effect of periodic platform motion in the direction of 6-DOF on rotor aerodynamic performance. Blade-element momentum method(BEM) was used for a numerical simulation, the unsteady airload effects due to the flow separation and the shed wake were considered by adopting a dynamic stall model based on the indicial response method. Rotor induced downwash was estimated using the momentum theory, coupled with empirical corrections for the turbulent wake states. The periodic platform motions including the translational motion in the heave, sway and surge directions and the rotational motion in the roll, pitch and yaw directions were considered, and each platform motion was applied as a sinusoidal function. For the numerical simulation, NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was used as the target wind turbine. The results showed that among the translation modes, the surge motion has the largest influence on changing the rotor airloads, while the effect of pitch motion is predominant for the rotations.

A comprehensive numerical study is carried out to investigate for the understanding of the flow evolution and flame development in a supersonic combustor with normal injection of ncumally injecting hydrogen in airsupersonic flows. The formulation treats the complete conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentration for a multi-component chemically reacting system. For the numerical simulation of supersonic combustion, multi-species Navier-Stokes equations and detailed chemistry of H2-Air is considered. It also accommodates a finite-rate chemical kinetics mechanism of hydrogen-air combustion GRI-Mech. 2.11[1], which consists of nine species and twenty-five reaction steps. Turbulence closure is achieved by means of a k-two-equation model (2). The governing equations are spatially discretized using a finite-volume approach, and temporally integrated by means of a second-order accurate implicit scheme (3-5).The supersonic combustor consists of a flat channel of 10 cm height and a fuel-injection slit of 0.1 cm width located at 10 cm downstream of the inlet. A cavity of 5 cm height and 20 cm width is installed at 15 cm downstream of the injection slit. A total of 936160 grids are used for the main-combustor flow passage, and 159161 grids for the cavity. The grids are clustered in the flow direction near the fuel injector and cavity, as well as in the vertical direction near the bottom wall. The no-slip and adiabatic conditions are assumed throughout the entire wall boundary. As a specific example, the inflow Mach number is assumed to be 3, and the temperature and pressure are 600 K and 0.1 MPa, respectively. Gaseous hydrogen at a temperature of 151.5 K is injected normal to the wall from a choked injector.A series of calculations were carried out by varying the fuel injection pressure from 0.5 to 1.5MPa. This amounts to changing the fuel mass flow rate or the overall equivalence ratio for different operating regimes. Figure 1 shows the instantaneous temperature fields in the supersonic combustor at four different conditions. The dark blue region represents the hot burned gases. At the fuel injection pressure of 0.5 MPa, the flame is stably anchored, but the flow field exhibits a high-amplitude oscillation. At the fuel injection pressure of 1.0 MPa, the Mach reflection occurs ahead of the injector. The interaction between the incoming air and the injection flow becomes much more complex, and the fuel/air mixing is strongly enhanced. The Mach reflection oscillates and results in a strong fluctuation in the combustor wall pressure. At the fuel injection pressure of 1.5MPa, the flow inside the combustor becomes nearly choked and the Mach reflection is displaced forward. The leading shock wave moves slowly toward the inlet, and eventually causes the combustor-upstart due to the thermal choking. The cavity appears to play a secondary role in driving the flow unsteadiness, in spite of its influence on the fuel/air mixing and flame evolution. Further investigation is necessary on this issue. The present study features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the previous works. In particular, the oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is not related to the cavity, but rather to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield, as also shown experimentally by Ben-Yakar et al. [6], The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The work appears to be the first of its kind in the numerical study of combustion oscillations in a supersonic combustor, although a similar phenomenon was previously reported experimentally. A more comprehensive discussion will be given in the final paper presented at the colloquium.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the appropriateness of methodology for designing urban sewer system using a rational method-based model, Makesw and an urban runoff model, SWMM. The Gunja basin was selected as a study area and precipitation, runoff, vegetation, soil, imperviousness data were used to estimate floods. The appropriateness of methodology was evaluated based on comparison analysis between floods estimated from Makesw and SWMM. The comparison analysis was conducted between floods estimated from Makesw and SWMM, which were simulated using design rainfall and measured rainfall from past inundation events. The comparison results showed that in the case of design rainfall, the rational method-based floods were larger than that based on SWMM in all main lines. However in several branch lines, the rational method-based floods were smaller than thoes based on SWMM. In addition, for the case of measured rainfall from past inundation events, it was easily to find the main and branch lines where the rational method-based floods were smaller than SWMM based ones. Especially, the lines where rational method-based floods were underestimated, were mostly main, $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ lines. It was concluded that the rational method-based results were not conservative. Based on rational method (steady flow analysis) and SWMM (unsteady flow analysis), the more conservative results the method provides, the more highly it is recommended to use in designing an urban sewer system.
