A high-order accurate Euler flow solver based on a discontinuous Galerkin method has been developed for the numerical simulation of unsteady flows on unstructured meshes. A multi-level solution-adaptive mesh refinement/coarsening technique was adopted to enhance the resolution of numerical solutions efficiently by increasing mesh density in the high-gradient region. An acoustic wave scattering problem was investigated to assess the accuracy of the present discontinuous Galerkin solver, and a supersonic flow in a wind tunnel with a forward facing step was simulated by using the adaptive mesh refinement technique. It was shown that the present discontinuous Galerkin flow solver can capture unsteady flows including the propagation and scattering of the acoustic waves as well as the strong shock waves.

A rupture in a high-pressure pipe causes the fluid in the pipe to be discharged in the atmosphere at a high speed resulting in a supersonic jet that generates the compressible flow. This supersonic jet may display complicated and unsteady behavior in general. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to investigate the compressible flow generated by a supersonic jet ejected from a high-pressure pipe. A Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model was selected to analyze the unsteady nature of the flow, which depends upon the various gases as well as the diameter of the pipe. In the CFD analysis, the basic boundary conditions were assumed to be as follows: pipe of diameter 10 cm, jet pressure ratio of 5, and an inlet gas temperature of 300 K. During the analysis, the behavior of the shockwave generated by a supersonic jet was observed and it was found that the blast wave was generated indirectly. The pressure wave characteristics of hydrogen gas, which possesses the smallest molecular mass, showed the shortest distance to the safety zone. There were no significant difference observed for nitrogen gas, air, and oxygen gas, which have similar molecular mass. In addition, an increase in the diameter of the pipe resulted in the ejected impact caused by the increased flow rate to become larger and the zone of jet influence to extend further.
This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

In this study, nonlinear flow-induced vibration(flutter) analyses of a 2-DOF launch vehicle airfoil have been conducted in supersonic and hypersonic flow regimes. Advanced aeroelastic analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics and computational structural dynamics is successfully developed and applied to the present analyses. Nonlinear unsteady aerodynamic analyses considering strong shock wave motions are conducted using inviscid Euler equations. Aeroelastic governing equations for the 2-DOF airfoil system is solved by the coupled integration method with interactive CFD and CSD computation procedures. Typical wedge type airfoil shapes with initial angle-of-attacks are considered to investigate the nonlinear flutter characteristics in supersonic(15). Also, the comparison of detailed aeroelastic responses are practically presented as numerical results.
The supersonic flow around tandem cavities was investigated by three- dimensional numerical simulations using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation with the $\kappa-\omega$ thrbulence model. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves, and the acoustic effect transmitted from wake flow to upstream. The upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split using van Leer's limiter was used as the numerical method. Numerical calculations were performed by the parallel processing with time discretizations carried out by the 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. The aspect ratio of cavities are 3 for the first cavity and 1 for the second cavity. The ratio of cavity interval to depth is 1. The ratio of cavity width to depth is 1 in the case of three dimensional flow. The Mach number and the Reynolds number were 1.5 and $4.5{\times}10^5$, respectively. The characteristics of the dominant frequency between two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows were compared, and the characteristics of the second cavity flow due to the fire cavity flow cavity flow was analyzed. Both two dimensional and three dimensional flow oscillations were in the 'shear layer mode', which is based on the feedback mechanism of Rossiter's formula. However, three dimensional flow was much less turbulent than two dimensional flow, depending on whether it could inflow and outflow laterally. The dominant frequencies of the two dimensional flow and three dimensional flows coincided with Rossiter's 2nd mode frequency. The another dominant frequency of the three dimensional flow corresponded to Rossiter's 1st mode frequency.

In this paper, experimental studies on the shroud separation were performed to investigate characteristics of the shroud separation at mach 3. Shroud separation tests were carried out in the vertical free-jet wind tunnel that is capable of testing separable structures. A shroud model was miniaturized to meet test objectives and test section dimensions of the wind tunnel. Pneumatic Locking and separation mechanisms were designed considering external force due to free stream. High speed cameras were used to record the shroud motion and unsteady shock patterns over the deploying shrouds during the shroud separation process. Also, unsteady pressures on the nose surface were measured by using the pressure sensors. Through the tests, the measurement data necessary for researches on the shroud separation technology were obtained. Shroud separation behaviors and characteristics of unsteady pressure on the nose surface for each external flow conditions were analyzed.

Separation motion analysis of staging system is conducted using combined analysis programs, which include unsteady aerodynamic analysis codes and dynamic motion analysis tools. In this study, the analysis is for the long-rang missile staging system. The purpose of this study is to verify the safety and reliance of the proposed staging system, and to find out the influence of angle of attack perturbation on staging. A structured parallel overset mesh called Chimera grid is used for the simulation of unsteady supersonic Euler flow solver. In addition, unsteady dynamic simulations are also performed.

Hysteresis phenomena are often encountered in a wide variety of fluid flow systems used in industrial and engineering applications. Hence, in recent years, a significant amount of research been focusing on clarifying the physics of the flow hysteresis appearing during the transient change of the pressure ratios and influencing the performance of the supersonic wind tunnel. However, investigations on the hysteresis phenomenon, particularly when it occurs inside the supersonic wind tunnel, are rare. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the hysteresis phenomena of the shock waves encountered in a supersonic wind tunnel. The unsteady and compressible flow was analyzed with an axisymmetric model, and the N-S equations were solved by using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The optimal pressure ratio was determined from the hysteresis curves, and the results can be utilized to operate the wind tunnel efficiently.

The present study aims at investigating the effectiveness of a new passive cavity flow control technique, sub-cavity. The characteristics of cavity flow oscillation with the device are compared with those with other control techniques tested previously, including a triangular bump and blowing jet. In the computation, the three-dimensional, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations governing the supersonic cavity flow are solved based on an implicit finite volume scheme spatially and multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme temporally. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The present results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations, and the amplitude of the pressure oscillation can be reduced in the presence of a sub-cavity.
