The finite element method has been widely used in the analysis of ring rolling. For ring rolling it requires a high computational expense due to the non-steady state material flow characteristics of the process. The high computational expense causes the finite element analysis to be impractical for industrial applications. In the current study, we aim to develop a practical implicit finite element modeling method for ring rolling. This method uses a step-wise steady state assumption and is called the “Stepped method”. The stepped method divides the whole process time of unsteady-state flow model into a finite number of steady-state models. It then solves the process at several specific time steps until convergence is reached. In order to confirm the performance and validity of the newly proposed stepped method, the result from the stepped method were compared to the results from a Lagrangian finite element method and to results from experiments reported in the literature.
Long-span bridge decks are often shaped as streamlined to improve the aerodynamic performance of the deck. There are a number of important shaping parameters for a streamlined bridge deck. Their effects on aerodynamics should be well understood for shaping the bridge deck efficiently and for facilitating the bridge deck design procedure. This study examined the effect of various shaping parameters such as the bottom plate slope, width ratio and side ratio on aerodynamic responses of single box streamlined bridge decks by employing unsteady RANS simulation. Steady state responses and flow field were analyzed in detail for wide range of bottom plate slopes, width and side ratios. Then for a particular deck shape Reynolds number effect was investigated by varying its value from $1.65{\times}10^4$ to $25{\times}10^4$. The aerodynamic response showed very high sensitivity to the considered shaping parameters and exhibited high aerodynamic performance for a particular combination of shaping parameters.
A dynamic water quality model is presented in order to simulate water quality under slowly varying flow conditions over time. To improve numerical accuracy, the proposed model uses a lumped system approach instead of extended period simulation, unlike the other available models. This approach can achieve computational efficiency by assuming liquid and pipe walls to be rigid, unlike the method of characteristics, which has been successfully implemented in rapidly varying flows. The discrete volume method is applied to resolve the advection and reaction terms of the transport equation for water quality constituents in pipes. Numerical applications are implemented to the pipe network examples under steady and unsteady conditions as well as hydraulic and water quality simulations. The numerical results are compared with EPANET2, which is a widely used simulation model for a water distribution system. The model results are in good agreement with EPANET2 for steady-state simulation. However, the hydraulic simulation results under unsteady flows differ from those of EPANET2, which causes a deviation in water quality prediction. The proposed model is expected to be a component of an integrated operation model for a water distribution system if it is combined with a computational model for rapidly varying flows to estimate leakage, pipe roughness, and intensive water quality.
Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.

Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes codes are used to simulate the shock tunnel in Konkuk university. In order to design experiments in impulse facilities properly and to interpret data from such facilities, it is necessary to understand how the flow approaches steady state. This is done by determining the transient flow field and flow establishment time around a given model. This will be accomplished by developing appropriate CFD codes which solve the Navier-Stokes equations, and simulating the starting process and resulting unsteady viscous flow phenomena. The starting process in a shock tunnel consists of multiple shock interactions and contact discontinuities, which are difficult to solve with the classical shock capturing schemes. A recently developed high resolution scheme is adapted for resolving the unsteady phenomena of those multiple shock interactions and contact surfaces during the starting process. The bifurcation phenomenon due to the interactions of the reflected shock from the end of the shock tube with the boundary layer generated by the incident shock becomes of particular interest. By comparing with the experiment results, the accuracy of the numerical analysis is validated and it is demonstrated that the properties which can hardly be obtained through the experiment can be estimated.

Steady and unsteady numerical simulations are conducted for the comparison with the experiments performed to investigate the ram accelerator flow field by using an expansion tube facility in Stanford University. Wavier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flows are analyzed by fully implicit and time accurate numerical methods with Jachimowski's detailed chemistry model for hydrogen-air combustion involving 9 species and 19 reaction steps. Although the steady state numerical simulation shows a good agreement with the experimental schlieren and OH PLIF images for the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$17N_2$ fails in reproducing the combustion region behind the shock intersection point shown in the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$12N_2$ mixture. Therefore, an unsteady numerical simulation is conducted for this case and the result shows all the detailed flow stabilization process. From the result of unsteady numerical simulation, the experimental result seems to be an instantaneous state during the flow stabilization process. The combustion behind the shock intersection point is the result of a normal detonation formed by the intersection of strong oblique shocks that exist at early stage of the stabilization process. At final stage, the combustion region behind the shock intersection point disappears and the steady state result is retained. The time required for stabilization of the reacting flow in the model ram accelerator is found to be very long in comparison with the experimental test time.
In this study, variation of effluent of residual chlorine concentration was estimated from bench scale distribution reservoir test according to variation of flow and baffle condition. According to the bench scale test results, when the flow rate was an unsteady state, difference between the case of no-baffle in the reservoir and the case of two-baffles in the reservoir became less than the condition when the effluent flow was in a steady state. Consequently, the results are caused by the flow rate variation. Thus, the baffle is less effective than a clearwell of steady state condition.

When the heat release and acoustic pressure fluctuations are generated in the combustor by irregular combustion, these fluctuations affect the mass flow rate of the propellants injected through the injectors. Also, the variations of the mass flow rate by these fluctuations again bring about irregular combustion and furthermore that is related with combustion instability. Therefore, it is very important to identify the mass variation for the pressure fluctuation on the injector and to investigate its transfer function. So, we first have studied quantifying the variation of mass flow rate generated in simplex swirl injector by injection pressure fluctuation. To acquire the transient mass flow rate in orifice with time, we have tried to measure of the flow axial velocity and liquid film thickness in orifice. The axial velocity is acquired through theoretical approach after measuring the pressure in orifice and the flow area in the orifice is measured by electric conductance method. As results, mass flow rate calculated by axial velocity and liquid film thickness measuring in orifice accorded with mass flow rate acquired by direct measuring method in the small error range within 1 percents in steady state and within 6 percents as average mass flow rate in pulsated state. Hence this method can be used to measure the mass flow rate not only in steady state but also in unsteady state because the mass flow rate in the orifice can acquire with time and this method shows very high accuracy based on the experimental results.
Turbulent airflow in channels of rectangular cross section with symmetric centerbodies is studied numerically. Shock wave configurations formed in the channel and in front of the entrance are examined. Solutions of the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are obtained with finite-volume solvers of second-order accuracy. The solutions demonstrate an expulsion/swallowing of the shocks with variations of the free-stream Mach number or angle of attack. Effects of the centerbody length and thickness on the shock wave stability and flow bifurcation are examined. Bands of the Mach number and angle of attack, in which there exist non-unique flow fields, are identified.

A comprehensive numerical analysis has been carried out for both non-reacting and reacting flows in a scramjet engine combustor with and without a cavity. The theoretical formulation treats the complete conservation equations of chemically reacting flows with finite-rate chemistry of hydrogen-air. Turbulence closure is achieved by means of a k-$\omega$ two-equation model. The governing equations are discretized using a MUSCL-type TVD scheme, and temporally integrated by a second-order accurate implicit scheme. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered over a broad range of injection pressure. The corresponding equivalence ratio of the overall fuel/air mixture ranges from 0.167 to 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the previous studies. In particular, the oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the .underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only to the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flow-field. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The roles of the cavity, injection pressure, and heat release in determining the flow dynamics are examined systematically.
