A Case Study of Snowfall Event over Yeongdong Region on March 1-2, 2021 (2021년 3월 1-2일 영동지역 강설 사례 연구)

  • The synoptic, thermodynamic, and dynamic characteristics of a snowfall event that occurred in the Yeongdong region on March 1-2, 2021, were investigated. Surface weather charts, ERA5 reanalysis data, rawinsonde data, GK-2A satellite data, and WISSDOM data were used for analysis. The snow depth, exceeding 10 cm, was observed at four weather stations during the analysis period. The maximum snow depth (37.4 cm) occurred at Bukgangneung. According to the analysis of the weather charts, old and dry air was trapped within relatively warm, humid air in the upper atmosphere over the East Sea and adjacent Yeongdong region. This caused unstable atmospheric conditions that led to developing convective clouds and snowfall over Bukgangneung. In particular, based on the thermodynamic and kinematic vertical analysis, we suggest that strong winds attributable to the vertical gradient of potential temperature in the low layer and the development of convective instability due to cold advection played a significant role in the occurrence of snowfall in the Yeongdong region. These results were confirmed from the vertical analysis of the rawinsonde data.

  • Loss of posterior bite support might cause unstable occlusal relationship and when the mandible slides forward in the centric or habitual occlusion, excessive load is applied to the anterior region followed by causing the occlusal plane to collapse or leading to a decrease in occlusal vertical dimension. In addition, disorder of temporomandibular joint function may occur. The inter-dental arch discrepancy causes a mismatch in the vertical and horizontal overlap of the anterior and posterior regions. The deep bite in the anterior region and the scissor bite in the posterior region cause unstable occlusal contact and insufficient occlusal contact area. This report was to rehabilitate a patient with above-mentioned complex problems. Physiologic adaptation to increased vertical dimension and new occlusal plane were evaluated using provisional prostheses, and definitive prostheses was fabricated using cross-mounting technique. Stable occlusion, harmonious teeth overlap and adequate occlusal plane were established, so functionally and aesthetically satisfactory results are obtained.

An Analysis of Low-level Stability in the Heavy Snowfall Event Observed in the Yeongdong Region (영동지역 대설 사례의 대기 하층 안정도 분석)

  • Extreme heavy snowfall episodes have been investigated in case of accumulated snowfall amount larger than 50 cm during the past ten years, in order to understand the association of low-level stability with heavy snowfall in the Yeongdong region. In general, the selected 4 events have similar synoptic setting such as the Siberian High extended to East Sea along with the Low passing by the southern Korean Peninsula, eventually inducing easterly in the Yeongdong region. Specifically moist-adiabatically neutral layer has been observed during the heavy snowfall period, which was easily identified using vertical profiles of equivalent potential temperature observed at Sokcho, whereas convective unstable layer has been formed over the East sea due to relatively warm sea surface temperature (SST) about $8{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ and lower temperature around 1~2 km above the surface, obtained from RDAPS. Difference of equivalent potential temperature between 850 hPa and surface as well as difference between air and sea temperatures altogether gradually increased before the snowfall period. Instability-induced moisture supply to the atmosphere from the East sea, being cooled and saturated by the upper cold surge, would make low-level ice cloud, and eventually move inland by the easterly flow. Heavy snowfall will be enhanced in association with low-level convergence by surface friction and upslope wind against Taebaek mountains. This study emphasizes the importance of low level stability in the Yeongdong region using the radiosonde sounding and RDAPS data, which should quantitatively be examined through numerical model as well as heat and moisture supply from the ocean.

  • We collected data of hydraulic fracturing tests and overcoring tests conducted in 84 boreholes in the south-east Korea in order to analyze the contemporary state of stress in this region. The average direction of the maximum horizontal stress was determined to be $N66^{\circ}{\pm}31^{\circ}E$. The relative magnitudes of the three principal stresses was ${\sigma}_v$ (vertical stress) < ${\sigma}_h$ (minimum horizontal stress) < ${\sigma}_H$ (maximum horizontal stress), indicating thrust fault stress regime.   • Formation of filaments and subsequent dense cores in ISM is one of the essential questions to address in star formation. To investigate this scenario in detail, we recently started a molecular line survey namely 'Filaments, the Universal Nursery of Stars (FUNS)' toward nearby filamentary clouds in Gould Belt using TRAO 14m single dish telescope equipped with a 16 multi-beam array. In the present work, we report the first look results of kinematics of a low mass star forming region L1478 of California molecular cloud. This region is found to be consisting of long filaments with a hub-filament structure. We performed On-The-Fly mapping observations covering ~1.1 square degree area of this region using C18O(1-0) as a low density tracer and 0.13 square degree area using N2H+(1-0) as a high density tracer, respectively. CS (2-1) and SO (32-21) were also used simultaneously to map ~290 square arcminute area of this region. We identified 10 filaments applying Dendrogram technique to C18O data-cube and 13 dense cores using FellWalker and N2H+ data set. Basic physical properties of filaments such as mass, length, width, velocity field, and velocity dispersion are derived. It is found that filaments in L~1478 are velocity coherent and supercritical. Especially the filaments which are highly supercritical are found to have dense cores detected in N2H+. Non-thermal velocity dispersions derived from C18O and N2H+ suggest that most of the dense cores are subsonic or transonic while the surrounding filaments are transonic or supersonic. We concluded that filaments in L~1478 are gravitationally unstable which might collapse to form dense cores and stars. We also suggest that formation mechanism can be different in individual filament depending on its morphology and environment.

A Modified Capacitor Current Feedback Active Damping Approach for Grid Connected Converters with an LCL Filter

  • Capacitor current feedback active damping is extensively used in grid-connected converters with an LCL filter. However, systems tends to become unstable when the digital control delay is taken into account, especially in low switching frequencies. This paper discusses this issue by deriving a discrete model with a digital control delay and by presenting the stable region of an active damping loop from high to low switching frequencies. In order to overcome the disadvantage of capacitor current feedback active damping, this paper proposes a modified approach using grid current and converter current for feedback. This can expand the stable region and provide sufficient active damping whether in high or low switching frequencies. By applying the modified approach, the active damping loop can be simplified from fourth-order into second-order, and the design of the grid current loop can be simplified. The modified approach can work well when the grid impedance varies. Both the active damping performance and the dynamic performance of the current loop are verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • By setting a new model to describe the time-discontinuous operation of PLL loop which used tri-state and sample-hold method, the stability analysis of nonlinear PLL has been performed in z-domain and the state equations for the transient response has been introduced. Until now, the lin-ear analysis by approximation of time-discontinuous to time-continuous operation had not found then stable region of time-discontinuous digital PLL exactly. However, the analysis In z-domain by the new model has been found the unstable region where the time-continuous analysis had have not. 1'herefore the limit of loop coefficient has been computed to design digital PLL optimally.

  • The study region encompasses about 5,900$km^2$ including the topographic maps of Kimhae, Pusan, Miryang, Yangsan, Panguhjin, Tonggok, Uhnyang, Ulsan, Youngchon, Kyongju, Pulguksa, and Kampo, all at a scale of 1:50,000. The paper discusses how to have prepared the four thematic maps, landslide and unstable slope distribution map, slope classification amp, soil classification map, and lineament density map. Using all the above maps and GIS, the relative slope-stability map for the study regiun was produced at a scale of 1:100,000 ; the map can be utilized for the regional land-use planning in the study region.

AU-rich elements (ARE) found in the U-rich region of Alu repeats at 3' untranslated regions

  • A significant portion (about 8% in human genome) of mammalian mRNA sequences contains AU(Adenine and Uracil) rich elements or AREs at their 3' untranslated regions (UTR). These mRNA sequences are usually stable. ARE motifs are assorted into three classes. The importance of AREs in biology is that they make certain mRNA unstable. We analyzed the occurrences of AREs and Alu, and propose a possible mechanism on how human mRNA could acquire and keep A REs at its 3' UTR originated from Alu repeats. Interspersed in the human genome, Alu repeats occupy 5% of the 3' UTR of mRNA sequences. Alu has poly-adenine (poly-A) regions at the end that lead to poly -thymine (poly-T) regions at the end of its complementary Alu. It has been discovered that AREs are present at the poly -T regions. In the all ARE's classes, 27-40% of ARE repeats were found in the poly -T region of Alu with mismatch allowed within 10% of ARE's length from the 3' UTRs of the NCBI's reference m RNA sequence database. We report that Alu, which has been reported as a junk DNA element, is a source of AREs. We found that one third of AREs were derived from the poly -T regions of the complementary Alu.

Specific Recognition of Unusual DNA Structures by Small Molecules: An Equilibrium Binding Study

  • The binding interaction of ethidium to a series of synthetic deoxyoligonucleotides containing a B-Z junction between left-handed Z-DNA and right-handed B-DNA, was studied. The series of deoxyoligonucleotides was designed so as to vary a dinucleotide step immediately adjacent to a B-Z junction region. Ethidium binds to the right-handed DNA forms and hybrid B-Z forms which contain a B-Z junction, in a highly cooperative manner. In a series of deoxyoligonucleotides, the binding affinity of ethidium with DNA forms which were initially hybrid B-Z forms shows over an order of magnitude higher than that with any other DNA forms, which were entirely in B-form DNA The cooperativity of binding isotherms were described by an allosteric binding model and by a neighbor exclusion model. The binding data were statistically compared for two models. The conformation of allosterically converted DNA forms under binding with ethidium is found to be different from that of the initial B-form DNA as examined by CD spectra. The ratio of the binding constant was interestingly correlated to the free energy of base unstacking and the conformational conversion of the dinucleotide. The more the base stacking of the dinucleotide is unstable, or the harder the conversion of B to A conformation, the higher the ratio of the binding constant of ethidium with the allosterically converted DNA forms and with the initial B-Z hybrid forms. DNA sequence around a B-Z junction region affects the binding affinity of ethidium. The results in this study demonstrate that ethidium could preferentially interact with unusual DNA structures.
