  • This study presents the measured unsteady fluctuation of impeller discharge flow for a centrifugal compressor in unstable operating region. The characteristics of the blade-to-blade flow at rotating stall onset were investigated by measuring unsteady velocity fluctuations at several different diffuser axial distances using a hot wire anemometer. The flow characteristics in terms of the radial and tangential velocity components and the flow angle distribution at the impeller exit were analyzed using phase-locked ensemble averaging techniques. As a result, increase or decrease of the radial velocity component during the rotating stall is dominated by that on the suction side. The radial velocity distributions show the opposite trends in the regions where the radial velocity during rotating stall onset increases and decreases.

  • Most of all combustion system has combustion instability. It is a serious problem in combustion system. Unstable injection is one of the source of combustion instability. The experimental investigation of spray characteristics for simplex swirl injector were conducted experimentally. Two kerosene based fuels were chosen as the atomizing fluid. As the major operating parameters, fuel temperature and injection pressure were chosen, and varied in the range from 253 K to 293 K and from 0.2 MPa to 1.0 MPa, respectively. Direct spray images and mean diameter were measured for the various combination of operating parameters in the flow field. The results of present study show that the injection pressure and spray cone angle are fluctuated at specific conditions while it is continuous steady injection. As the fuel temperature changes continuously, spray cone angle varies discontinuously through the region of injection instability.

  • In this paper, the genetic algorithm is used to design a mixed $H_2/H{\infty}$ controller. Two kinds of controller forms, Youla's form and the general form are considered to design a mixed $H_2/H{\infty}$ controller Efficient searching methods are sought to minimize the given $H_2$ cost function under the $H{\infty}$ constraint. It is verified by an example that the developed algorithm can provide stable results in the region where unstable results are shown by the conventional gradient method.

  • In this paper, a robust levitation controller for an attractive MAGLVE system is designed. The design of an H$\infty$ controller based on LMI method is proposed for the control of a simple magnetic levitation system. Attractive MAGLEV system is highly nonlinear and open-loop unstable, and has a very restricted equilibrium region, Also, this system has to tolerate various disturbances caused by propulsion. Thus a robust feedback controller is needed to control the system efficiently. We first formulate a mathematical model for the single magnet levitation system. Then we set up an H$\infty$ control problem as a mixed sensitivity problem where the augmented plant is constructed with frequency weighting function ...

  • This paper is to discuss the numerical conformal mapping from the unit disk onto Jordan region, which can be solved by Theodorsen equation. Wegmann's method has been known as the most efficient one for the Theodorsen equation. However, we found divergence through numerical experiments by the iterative method of Wegmann. The divergence occurs especially when some degree of difficulty is high. We analyze the cause of divergence and propose an improved method by applying a low frequency pass filter to Wegmann's method. By this proposed method we can get a stable convergence for all the problems which was unstable with the Wegmann's method.

  • Nonlinear parabolized stability equations for compressible flow in general curvilinear coordinate system are derived to deal with a broad range of transition prediction problems on complex geometry. A highly accurate finite difference PSE code has been developed using an implicit marching procedure. Blasius flow is tested. The results of the present computation show good agreement with DNS data. Nonlinear interaction can make the T-S fundamental wave more unstable and the onset of its amplitude decay is shifted downstream relative to linear case. For nonlinear calculations, rather small difference in initial amplitude can produce large change during nonlinear region. Compressible secondary instability at Mach number 1.6 is also simulated and showed that 1.1% initial amplitude for primary mode is enough to trigger the secondary growth.

  • TIG welding process is applied for the active metal such as aluminum and titanium, also sometimes for overlay welding of superalloy. However the welding speed to be applied is very low because of the unstable bead formed in the region of high current and high welding speed. The present study was carried out to examine the basic phenomena of high speed TIG melt run welding by the 2% Th - W electrode(dia.3.2mm) of various tip shapes.

  • Measurements have been made in an automotive HVAC b1ower for two different centrifugal fans. This work is directed at improving the performance of a conventional forward-curved centrifugal fan for a given small blower casing. Mean velocities and pressure have been measured using a miniature five-hole probe and a pressure scanning unit connected to an online data acquisition system. First, we obtained the fan performance versus flow rates showing a significant attenuation of unstable nature achieved with the new fan rotor in the surging operation range. Second, aerodynamic characterizations were carried out by investigating the velocity and pressure fields in the casing flow passage for different fan operating conditions. The measurements stowed that performance coefficients are strongly influenced by flow characteristics at the throat region. The main flow features ware common in both fans, but improved performance is achieved with tole new fan rotor, particularly in lower flow rate legions. Based on the measured results, design improvements were carried out in an acceptable operation range, which gave considerable insight into what features of flow behavior ware most important.

  • In this study the deformation of liquid-air interface of Newtonian or Boger fluids filled between two parallel-plates geometry was investigated when two surfaces were separated at a constant speed. The interface between the fluid and air showed either stable or unstable deformation depending on experimental conditions. Repeated experiments for a wide range of experimental conditions revealed that the deformation mode could be classified into three types: 'stable region', 'fingering' and 'cavitation'. The experimental condition for the mode of deformation was plotted in a capillary number vs. Deborah number phase plane. It has been found that the elasticity of Boger fluids destabilize the interface deformation. On the other hand, the elasticity suppresses the formation and growth of cavities.

  • A gyroscope is a rotating body possessing one axis of symmetry and whose rotation about the symmetry axis is relatively large compared with the rotation about any other axis. Tuning fork is this type of structure that various modem gyro-sensors are based on. In this paper, dynamic behavior of a cantilevered beam subjected ta a base rotation with respect to the eccentric axis that is parallel to the beam axis is analyzed. The final equations of motion in terms of generalized coordinates can be solved with numerical scheme with various values of angular velocities and angular accelerations of the rotating axis. In contrast to the case of rotating cantilever beam like helicopter blade, the rotational motion with respect to the beam axis has effect to decrease the stiffness of the beam and has unstable region depending on the magnitude of the rotational angular velocity and angular acceleration.
