The sight distance at unsignalized intersections is the one of the fundamental geometric design elements, and can ensure safety and efficient operations. Despite its importance, little research attention has been directed in Korea compared to developed countries such as European countries, the United States, and Japan. AASHTO ISD policies have been applied to the intersection design in Korea without any revise, which can produce unrealistic and unadoptable design values. Those values are emerged from several reasons because the AASHTO ISD has been calibrated based on the local data. Therefore the ISD hardly takes into account the local characteristics of Korea such as driving behavior. vehicular movement and roadway conditions. The objective of this study is to calculate the appropriate ISD values for unsignalized intersections in the urban area in Korea. In this study, we employed the ISD model of AASHTO(2001), which is based on gap acceptance theory and can account for and take the driving and roadway conditions in Korea into consideration. The approach can also consider the complex driving maneuvers at the intersections in a proper and simple manner. The results in this study show that the ISD design criteria currently used in Korea are more conservative(safer) than those of the USA. In other words, the ISD using field data collected in this study has generally smaller values than those in USA.

This paper presents a practical guidence for determining an optimal traffic control system at intersections in the urban areas in Korea. Two alternative systems, unsignalized and signalized, are considered. For analyzing the unsignalized system, two kinds of simulation model are developed ; gap acceptance model and first -in -first - out model. For the signalized system the total delay function for general arrival distribution is developed under the assumption that departure time is constant and it is used to find an optimal cycle time. Finally, the results in these two alternative systems are compared under the minimum average delay criterion and an optimal traffic control system is determined. This approach supports the decision making whether to install a traffic signal system in an intersection with given traffic flows and, if installed, determines what is the optimal cycle time and how the traffic signal phases are divided. And it also gives upper bounds of traffic flows to be passed in the unsignalized and the signalized system, which can be effectively used whenever an intersection is designed.
The purposes of this study are to identify Traffic Flow characteristics and to develop approach delay model of unsignalized intersection based on the travel speed in the conflicting area. The results of this study are as following ; 1. The cumulative frequency distributions of Left-turning speed show a few differences among approaches and they are distributed to lower range of speeds. On the other hand, those of through speed show obvious differences among bounds. The similar results also show in the analysis of Percentile speed. 2. The effectiveness of conflicting movements to travel speed in the conflicting area are analyzed using regression analysis. Left-turning speed model shows that Left-and Right-Conflicting speed. Through-speed model is also developed, when approaching through volume is less than 420vph. 3. Since the lost time due to the acceleration stop, and decelerlation is occured in the conflicting area, approach delay model is delivered using the travel speed models under the condition of small queuing delay.
When the capacity and traffic operation at signalized intersections are analyzed in Korea, the unprotected left-turn saturation flow rate, which is an important parameter for the analysis, is estimated form the USHCM model. thus, exact analysis of the left-turn is not possible because of the difference of traffic environments between two contries. In order to improve this problem, it is undertaken in this study to develop techniques for the estimation of unprotected left-turn saturation flows based on Korean drivers' data. As study intersections, signalized or unsignalized intersections on the 6, 4 and 2 lane streets are selected. the data for the saturation flow measurement and gap-acceptance behavior analysis are inputed in a notebook computer on the sites. The critical acceptance gaps of the 6, 4, and 2 lane streets are analyzed to be 6.0 secs, 4.6 secs, and 4.3 secs respectively. the average minimum headway of the left-turn vehicle was observed to be 2.6 secs. As the model to estimate unportected left-turn saturation flows, the drew model is recommended for 6 and 4 lane streets, and a graph is suggested for the 2-lane street. As the values of the parameters of the Drew model, the 2.6 secs of this study is recommended for the average minimum headway of the left-turn. But, the critical acceptance gap varies according to the approach speed of opposing traffic and driver population, it requires field survey to measure the gap of an intersection; however, the values of the gaps studied in this study may be used for the general intersections in urban area in Korean.
This study aims at developing a method for estimating passenger car equivalency (PCE) values for various vehicle types that could be considered in estimating capacity and delay at intersections without traffic signals, especially at modern small 3-leg roundabouts. Unlike signalized intersections, the PCE value has not yet been treated explicitly in traffic operations involving unsignalized intersections. Both empirical and theoretical approaches for determining the PCE values at modern small 3-leg roundabouts were evaluated. As a result, the PCEs derived in this study were highly correlated with those of field measurements.

The purpose of this study is to find the driving difficulty of automated vehicles in terms of road infrastructure operation. It was judged out of this study that the level of automated driving would be enhanced if the road situation recognition ability was advanced through the presentation of infrastructure information during the difficult driving situations. The difficulty evaluation index was divided into three stages, and a survey of experts and an AHP were conducted. The result of the AHP showed that the driving difficulty of the interrupted flow was much higher than that of the uninterrupted flow. The AHP results also showed that and the driving difficulty of unsignalized intersections and roundabouts under an interrupted flow was evaluated as the highest. The top six driving situations with high difficulty were also evaluated to occur under unsignalized intersections and roundabouts.
Though many studies regarding roundabout have been recently conducted, most of them have focused on operational aspect. Moreover, majority of the previous researches analyzes operational effects of single roundabout, but seldom investigate the effects of multi-roundabouts constructed on road networks. In this study, we seek ways to construct multiple roundabouts on road network maximizing their operational effects. The analysis investigate influence of both adjacent signalized and unsignalized intersections as well as influence of the distance from those intersections to roundabouts. The results show that the optimal distance between two adjacent intersections were calculated to be 150m, and any two intersections located within 150m apart influence each other thus imposing operational restrictions on each other. In addition, those results are confirmed using simulation analysis conducted on the real urban network in Nonheon regional area, Incheon City.

According to the National Police Agency, the total number of traffic accidents which occurred in 2010 was 226,878. Intersection accidents accounts for 44.8%, the largest portion of the entire traffic accidents. An research on the signalized intersection is constantly made, while an research on the unsignalized intersection is yet insufficient. This study selected traffic volume, road width, and sight distance as the input variables which affect unsignalized intersection accidents, and number of accidents as the output variable to build a model using ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). The forecast performance of this model is evaluated by comparing the actual measurement value with the forecasted value. The compatibility is evaluated by R2, the coefficient of determination, along with Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Square Error (MSE), the indicators which represent the degree of error and distribution. The result shows that the $R^2$ is 0.9817, while MAE and MSE are 0.4773 and 0.3037 respectively, which means that the explanatory power of the model is quite decent. This study is expected to provide the basic data for establishment of safety measure for unsignalized intersection and the improvement of traffic accidents.
