  • Incessant rainfalls in unsaturated soil raises pore water pressure and drops shear stress. Controlling pore water pressure in unsaturated soil prevents pressure increase and leads to slope stability. Laboratory experiment of pore water absorption in soil tank has been conducted for pore pressure decrease in soil slope under artifical rainfall supplied in varying rainfall indensities. Soil slope failure triggers the deepening of the wetting front to critical depth accompanied by decrease in matric suction induced by water infilteration. This paper addresses an experimental design for absorption pipe to prevent pore pressure increase in unsaturated soil slope from heavy rain. It is expected that absorption pipe will be widely used in unsaturated soil slope to strengthen slope stability.

  • It has been well known that the infiltration of rainfall causes major surfacial slope failures in Korea. However, the hydrological and mechanical behaviors in unsaturated slopes are somewhat complex. When an analysis on unsaturated slope problems is performed, soil-water characteristics curves (SWCC) are considered as major parameters to apply. Since the weathered soil slopes are layered and stressed by overburden pressures, the response of SWCCs should account for its overburden pressure. To deal with this situation, in this study, laboratory testings were conducted to evaluate the SWCC under various overburden stress. In addition, the unsaturated shear strength was estimated using SWCC. Then the performance of unsaturated weathered soil slopes was evaluated under various conditions after applying the effect of overburden pressure on SWCCs. The results demonstrated that the effect of overburden pressure on SWCC could be substantial and the proper application to analysis is very important to enhance the prediction of slope stability.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the soil-water characteristic curves for unsaturated soil. To this ends, a series of suction measured test was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soil which is located in Korea, used the modified pressure plate apparatus. From the test results, the water contents, degree of saturation and volumetric water contents was analyzed with the suction. And was drawn the soil-water characteristic curves was drain from the test results for various factors.

  • The mathematical model was proposed to simulate ozone transport and remediation in unsaturated soils contaminated with phenanthrene. Soil column experiments were also carried out to calibrate the mathematical model. The experimental results successfully matched with the modeling results in various soil conditions. The model proposed nondimensional fraction factor to reveal reactivity between phenanthrene and gas phase ozone and liquid phase ozone. From sensitivity analysis, the fraction factor and stoichiometric coefficient decreased as water content increased. Simulation results showed increased SOM content retarded the ozone transport and the phenanthrene removal due to increased ozone consumption.

  • In order to study hydraulic properties and mechanical properties on unsaturated region, soil-water retention curve was obtained for suction plate method and pressure plate method, respectively. To investigate permeability of unsaturated soil and soil-water retention curve at the same time, unsaturated permeability tests using an improved Richard's method were performed on Joomoonjin Sand. These experimental results were compared with those by empirical equations. The relationship between air entry value and saturated permeability of filter was obtained for selecting a proper filter in unsaturated soil tests.

  • Pneumatic fracturing is an emerging tool to enhance the remediation efficiency of contaminated unsaturated zones by injecting high pressure air and inducing artificial fracture networks. Pneumatic fracturing is reported to be well suited for the cases where the contaminated unsaturated zone thickness is less than 5 m as many contaminated domestic sites in Korea. Nevertheless, there have been almost no studies carried out on the site-specific efficiency and the optimized design of pneumatic fracturing considering the unsaturated zone characteristics of Korea. In this study, we employ numerical simulations to compare the efficiency of pneumatic fracturing on the aspect of the site remediation and the porosity improvement at several hypothetic unsaturated zones composed of four typical soil types. According to the simulation results, it is found that the zone with fine grains soil such as clay and silt shows better efficiency than the zone composed of coarse grains in terms of air flow and porosity enhancements. The results imply that pneumatic fracturing may improve the efficiency of site reclamation by jointly or independently applied to the many contaminated sites in Korea.

  • Studying unsaturated soil mechanics, determination of soil water characteristic curve and permeability equation is an essential factor but it is not easy. In this research a new testing apparatus was developed to determine soil water characteristic curve and permeability equation. The testing to get saturated permeability coefficients and soil water characteristic curves for two soils was performed by using the developed testing apparatus. First, a saturated permeability testing was performed and then the testing to get soil water characteristic curve of a drying process was performed. Next, the testing to get soil water characteristic curve of a wetting process was performed. Testing results showed hysteresis phenomena between soil water characteristic curve of a drying process and soil water characteristic curve of a wetting process. The permeability equations were determined by a theoretical method where a saturated permeability coefficient and a soil water characteristic curve were used.

  • In this study, shear strength behavior of fine-grained soils was investigated under unsaturated conditions. The samples in the unsaturated state were subjected to a net normal stress (σ-ua) of 40 kPa and different matric suctions (ua-uw) of 50, 100 and 150 kPa. The matric suction values applied in the triaxial tests were selected according to the bubbling pressures determined from the SWC curves. The study was carried out on prepared re-constituted cylindrical samples by uniaxial consolidation of soil slurries. First, consolidated drained (CD) triaxial compression tests were performed on the saturated samples and the cohesion and angle of internal friction were determined. After that, drained triaxial compression tests under matric suctions were performed on the unsaturated samples. In order to obtain unsaturated test results, cohesion and internal friction angle values of saturated samples were used. The nonlinear surface representing the shear strength surface was approximated consisting of two planes (double planar surface). The reason for the nonlinear behavior of some soils is that the amount of sand content contained in it is relatively high and the bubbling pressure/permanent water content value is relatively low.

  • Since the water retention curve is considered as a major parameter to evaluate the unsaturated ground or soils, overburden pressure and clay content on soils underneath ground surface have not been considered for estimating water retention characteristics. Therefore, a need exists that the effect of overburden pressure and clay content on water retention characteristics was assessed in typical weathered soils found in Korea. Soil-Water Characteristic Curve and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity were estimated using water retention characteristics under the condition of different overburden pressure, clay content, and de-saturation path. Then, these effects are evaluated with the results of SWCC tests from the laboratory. In addition to that, the unsaturated moisture capacity and diffusivity of each case is discussed.

  • Laboratory scale experiments were carried out to delineate the effects of liquid phases, such as soil water and light nonaqeous phase liquid (LNAPL) on the transport of gaseous ozone in unsaturated soil. Soil water enhanced the transport of ozone due to water film effect, which prevents direct reaction between soil particles and gaseous ozone, and increased water content reduced the breakthrough time of ozone because of increased average linear velocity and decreased air-water interface area. Diesel fuel as LNAPL also played a similar role with water film, so the breakthrough time of ozone in diesel-contaminated soil was significantly reduced compared with uncontaminated soil. Ozone breakthrough time was retarded with increased diesel concentration, however, because of high reactivity of diesel fuel with ozone. In unsaturated soil containing two liquids of soil water and LNAPL, the transport of ozone was mainly influenced by nonwetting fluid, diesel fuel in this study.
