  • RAM (Reliability, Availability and Maintenance) has been applied to design and analysis tools which affects system's operational sustainability and its life cycle cost as RAM-c(2009 DoD). RAM-c plays also an important role to guarantee the system engineering for mission assurance. Reliability is highly related to the probability of system failure. Availability means mission capability or the condition of ready to mission. Maintenance includes both the repair to recover the system in the event of failure/unexpected breakdown and proactive maintenance to prolong the design service life of the system or machinery. It is the purpose that this paper is to analyze and conclude the objective service life of UAV. The more UAV is operated, the less the level of its reliability becomes. Repairing failures and supplying spare parts on time, system reliability could be improved up until the time over target. Applying statistical Weibull distributions, this paper suggests the analysis of the design service life and economic life of UAV based on RAM-c with operational data.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic loads generated by rotating rotor and wakes. The present UAV (TR-S5-03) finite element model is constructed as a full three-dimensional configuration with different fuel conditions and tilting angles for helicopter, transition and airplane flight modes. Practical computational procedure for modal transient response analysis (MTRA) is established. using general purpose finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The dynamic loads generated by rotating blades in the transient and forward flight conditions are calculated by unsteady CFD technique with sliding mesh concept. As the results of present study, transient structural displacements and accelerations are presented in detail. In addition, vibration characteristics of structural parts and installed equipments are investigated for different fuel conditions and tilting angles.

  • The UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) which is remotely operating with long endurance in high altitude must have a very reliable propulsion system. The precise fault diagnostic system of the turboprop engine as a propulsion system of this type UAV can promote reliability and availability. This work proposes a diagnostic method which can identify the faulted components from engine measuring parameter changes using Fuzzy Logic and quantify its faults from the identified fault pattern using Neural Network Algorithms. It is found by evaluation examples that the proposed diagnostic method can detect well not only single type faults but also multiple type faults.

  • In this paper, three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamic(CFD) analyses based on overset grid technique have been performed for a hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) considering the wake effect generated by a rotating propeller. In addition, the defection of rudder is considered in order to consider to predict the equilibrium condition of yawing moment during cruise flight conditions. It is importantly shown in this paper that the wake interference effect of the propeller is significant to accurately predict the yawing moment of the UAV and the yawing moment coefficient corresponding to a flight speed can be different because of its different amount of wake effect due to the different rotating speed of the propeller.

  • In the present study, we assessed the parallel computing performance of Agisoft Metashape for orthomosaic generation, which can implement aerial triangulation, generate a three-dimensional point cloud, and make an orthomosaic based on SfM (Structure from Motion) technology. Due to the nature of SfM, most of the time is spent on Align photos, which runs as a relative orientation, and Build dense cloud, which generates a three-dimensional point cloud. Metashape can parallelize the two processes by using multi-cores of CPU (Central Processing Unit) and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). An orthomosaic was created from large UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) images by six conditions combined by three parallel methods (CPU only, GPU only, and CPU + GPU) and two operating systems (Windows and Linux). To assess the consistency of the results of the conditions, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of aerial triangulation was measured using ground control points which were automatically detected on the images without human intervention. The results of orthomosaic generation from 521 UAV images of 42.2 million pixels showed that the combination of CPU and GPU showed the best performance using the present system, and Linux showed better performance than Windows in all conditions. However, the RMSE values of aerial triangulation revealed a slight difference within an error range among the combinations. Therefore, Metashape seems to leave things to be desired so that the consistency is obtained regardless of parallel methods and operating systems.

  • The high-altitude and mobility characteristics of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have made them a key element of new radio systems, particularly because they can exceed the limits of terrestrial networks. However, at high altitudes, UAVs can be significantly affected by intercell interference at a high line-of-sight probability. To mitigate this drawback, we propose an algorithm that selects the optimal beam to reduce interference and maximize transmission efficiency. The proposed algorithm comprises two steps: constructing a user-location-based fingerprint database according to the user types presented herein and cooperative beam selection. Simulations were conducted using cellular cooperative downlink systems for analyzing the performance of the proposed method, and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise cumulative distribution function and spectral efficiency cumulative distribution function were used as performance analysis indicators. Simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm could reduce the effect of interference and increase the performance of the desired signal. Moreover, the algorithm could efficiently reduce overheads and system cost by reducing the amount of resources required for information exchange.

  • UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) have an INS(Inertial Navigation System) equipment and also have an electro-optical Equipment for mission. This paper proposes the vision based attitude estimation algorithm using Kalman Filter and Optical flow for UAV. Optical flow is acquired from the movie of camera which is equipped on UAV and UAV's attitude is measured from optical flow. In this paper, Kalman Filter has been used for the settlement of the low reliability and estimation of UAV's attitude. Algorithm verification was performed through experiments. The experiment has been used rate table and real flight video. Then, this paper shows the verification result of UAV's attitude estimation algorithm. When the rate table was tested, the error was in 2 degree and the tendency was similar with AHRS measurement states. However, on the experiment of real flight movie, maximum yaw error was 21 degree and Maximum pitch error was 7.8 degree.

  • Understanding of current features of collapsed buildings, terrain, and other infrastructures is a critical issue for disaster site managers. On the other hand, a comprehensive site investigation of current location of survivors buried under the remains of a building is a difficult task for disaster managers due to the difficulties in acquiring the various information on the disaster sites. To overcome these circumstances, such as large disaster sites and limited capability of rescue workers, this study makes use of a drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) to effectively obtain current image data from large disaster areas. The framework of 3D model reconstruction of disaster sites using aerial imagery acquired by drones was also presented. The proposed methodology is expected to assist fire fighters and workers on disaster sites in making a rapid and accurate identification of the survivors under collapsed buildings.
