  • With the fast growing popularity of small UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), recent UAV systems have been designed and utilized for the various field with their own specific purposes. UAVs are opening up many new opportunities in the fields of electronics, sensors, camera, and software for pilots. Increase in awareness and mission capabilities of UAVs are driving innovations and new applications driven with the help of low cost and its capability in undertaking high threat task. In particular, small unmanned aerial vehicles should fly in environments with high probability of unexpected sudden change or obstacle appearance in low altitude situations. In this paper, current researches regarding techniques of autonomous flight of smal UAV systems are introduced and we propose a draft idea for planning paths for small unmanned aerial vehicles in adversarial environments to arrive at the given target safely with low cost sensors.

  • Over the past few decades, the impact of natural, manmade and natech (natural hazard triggering technological disasters) disasters has been devastating, affecting over 4.4 billion people. In spite of recent technological advances, the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters and the escalation of manmade threats is presenting a number of challenges that warrant immediate attention. This paper explores the integration of drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's) into infrastructure monitoring and post-disaster assessment. Through reviewing some of the recent disasters, effectiveness of utilizing UAV's in different stages of disaster life cycle is demonstrated and needed steps for successful integration of UAV's in infrastructure monitoring, hazard mitigation and post-incident assessment applications are discussed. In addition, some of the challenges associated with implementing UAV's in disaster monitoring, together with research needs to overcome associated knowledge gaps, is presented.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a popular research topic because of a great ripple effect in the future. However, current UAV technologies cannot be applied to manual aerial vehicles without any modification. As an alternative to current UAV technology, humanoid robots are adopted as pilots. If a humanoid robot controls an aerial vehicle autonomously, not only could manual aerial vehicles be utilized as UAVs, but the humanoid robot would also be put into an environment created for humans and conduct some missions suitable for humans. Humanoid robots are also able to handle tools and equipment designed for humans. In order to prove that a humanoid robot can pilot an airplane, an experiment is performed and the results of this experiment are shown in this paper.

  • Given that the utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is recently increased, a variety of UAV control methods are being applied. In general, it has been used a lot to directly control a UAV via manipulator. However, tangible user interface is required to control UAVs accurately. This paper proposes a method for controlling an UAV based on multiple Myos. The UAV is connected to a ground control station and then controlled by Myos. Intuitive control is possible by controlling the UAV using tangible user interface.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, drones) are becoming increasingly useful in a variety of fields. Advances in UAV and camera technology have made it possible to equip them with ultra-high resolution sensors and capture images at low altitudes, which has improved the reliability and classification accuracy of object identification on the ground. The distinctive contribution of this study is the derivation of sensor-specific performance metrics (GRD/GSD), which shows that as the GSD increases with altitude, the GRD value also increases. In this study, we identified the characteristics of various onboard sensors and analysed the image quality (discrimination resolution) of aerial photography results using UAVs, and calculated the shooting conditions to obtain the discrimination resolution required for reading ground objects.

  • Multi disciplinary approach for aerodynamics, structure, propulsion, and flight control system is necessary to develop High Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (HALE UAV). Various HALE UAV development trends are surveyed to understand their operational requirements. Separating the UAV Take Off Weight by 150kg, Airworthiness implementation direction for HALE UAV is studied under the current Airworthiness regulations. NATO STANAG 4671 and STANAG 4703 Airworthiness certification criteria are analyzed, and their applicability was proposed for future HALE UAV development. In addition, minimization of the risk for UAV is studied by considering probability of cumulative catastrophic failure for HALE UAV. This Hazard Risk Index can support the future UAV Airworthiness Certification Criteria.

  • As Unmanned Aerial Vehicles technology has been widespread, various types of unmanned aircraft and mission equipment have been developed in line with mission diversification. Especially in Korea, small unmanned aerial vehicles have been actively developed. In addition, flight control system and mission equipment interface system for effective control of small unmanned aerial vehicles, efficient communication system configuration and operation for transmission to ground operated systems by processing data are required. This paper addresses efficient system structure and operation of communication equipment for missions and control of small unmanned aerial vehicles.

  • An unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) refers to an aircraft that has all or part of its functions to autonomously fly by grasping the surrounding environment by remote control on the ground without a pilot on board. With the development of unmanned aerial technology, civil/military forces are developing unmanned aerial vehicles for various purposes. In order to control unmanned aerial vehicles from the ground, communication protocols between unmanned aerial vehicles and ground control equipment are required, and civil/military forces have developed and used a photocall for different purposes. In this study, the characteristics of the MAVLink protocol used in the private sector and the STANAG 4586 protocol used in the military are compared/analyzed in detail to find elements to complement each other and to draw improvement measures for protocol unification.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have mostly been used for military purposes but with the progress in ICT and reduced manufacturing costs, they are increasingly used for various private services. UAVs are expected to carry out autonomous flying in the future. In order to carry out complex tasks, swarm flights are essential. Although the swarm flights has been researched a lot due to its different network and infrastructure from the existing UAV system, There are still not enough study on security threats and requirements for the secure swarm flights. In this paper, to solve these problems, UAV autonomous flight technology is defined based on US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and swarm flights and security threat about it are classified. And then we defined and compared security requirements according to security threats of each swarm flights so as to contribute to the development of secure UAC swarm flights in the future.

  • Task assignments of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are examined. The phrase "task assignment" comprises the decision making procedures of a UAV group. In this study, an on-line decentralized task assignment algorithm is proposed for an autonomous UAV group. The proposed method is divided into two stages: an order optimization stage and a communications and negotiation stage. A genetic algorithm and negotiation strategy based on one-to-one communication is adopted for each stage. Through the proposed algorithm, decentralized task assignments can be applied to dynamic environments in which sensing range and communication are limited. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by performing numerical simulations.
