A study on influencing factors and revitalization of the adoption of off-site construction - Case study on the construction market of the United Kingdom - (현장외 시공 공법 채택의 영향 인자 및 활성화 방안 연구 - 영국 건설 시장 사례 연구 -)

  • Over a few decades, off-site construction (OSC) has been widely used for building and bridge constructions. OSC is a construction method that build structures at a different location than the location of use, and normally it occurs in a manufacturing plant. There are many studies on the perceived benefits of OSC, yet relatively few studies which quantitatively assess the benefits and factors affecting the decision of the use of OSC have been investigated. This study investigates the influencing factors of the use of OSC system and its revitalization solutions in the construction industry. As the research method, interview and questionnaire survey are conducted by visiting industry experts of OSC and sending a questionnaire to the OSC stakeholders including engineers, manufacturers, contractors and clients in the United Kingdom (UK). The construction industry of the UK is targeted for the study since it has a number of commons with the Korean construction industry in terms of the structure of the construction industry and current low take-up of the OSC. The survey provides the results that the reluctance of clients to use OSC is the key factor of the slow use of OSC despite of the perceived benefits of OSC. In addition, in order to revitalize OSC in the construction market, three revival recommendations are suggested based on the survey results.

Differential Localisation of PARP-1 N-Terminal Fragment in PARP-1+/+ and PARP-1-/- Murine Cells

  • Human PARP family consists of 17 members of which PARP-1 is a prominent member and plays a key role in DNA repair pathways. It has an N-terminal DNA-binding domain (DBD) encompassing the nuclear localisation signal (NLS), central automodification domain and C-terminal catalytic domain. PARP-1 accounts for majority of poly-(ADP-ribose) polymer synthesis that upon binding to numerous proteins including PARP itself modulates their activity. Reduced PARP-1 activity in ageing human samples and its deficiency leading to telomere shortening has been reported. Hence for cell survival, maintenance of genomic integrity and longevity presence of intact PARP-1 in the nucleus is paramount. Although localisation of full-length and truncated PARP-1 in PARP-1 proficient cells is well documented, subcellular distribution of PARP-1 fragments in the absence of endogenous PARP-1 is not known. Here we report the differential localisation of PARP-1 Nterminal fragment encompassing NLS in PARP-$1^{+/+}$ and PARP-$1^{-/-}$ mouse embryo fibroblasts by live imaging of cells transiently expressing EGFP tagged fragment. In PARP-$1^{+/+}$ cells the fragment localises to the nuclei presenting a granular pattern. Furthermore, it is densely packaged in the midsections of the nucleus. In contrast, the fragment localises exclusively to the cytoplasm in PARP-$1^{-/-}$ cells. Flourescence intensity analysis further confirmed this observation indicating that the N-terminal fragment requires endogenous PARP-1 for its nuclear transport. Our study illustrates the trafficking role of PARP-1 independently of its enzymatic activity and highlights the possibility that full-length PARP-1 may play a key role in the nuclear transport of its siblings and other molecules.

Centrifuge modelling of pile-soil interaction in liquefiable slopes

  • Piles passing through sloping liquefiable deposits are prone to lateral loading if these deposits liquefy and flow during earthquakes. These lateral loads caused by the relative soil-pile movement will induce bending in the piles and may result in failure of the piles or excessive pile-head displacement. Whilst the weak nature of the flowing liquefied soil would suggest that only small loads would be exerted on the piles, it is known from case histories that piles do fail owing to the influence of laterally spreading soils. It will be shown, based on dynamic centrifuge test data, that dilatant behaviour of soil close to the pile is the major cause of these considerable transient lateral loads which are transferred to the pile. This paper reports the results of geotechnical centrifuge tests in which models of gently sloping liquefiable sand with pile foundations passing through them were subjected to earthquake excitation. The soil close to the pile was instrumented with pore-pressure transducers and contact stress cells in order to monitor the interaction between soil and pile and to track the soil stress state both upslope and downslope of the pile. The presence of instrumentation measuring pore-pressure and lateral stress close to the pile in the research described in this paper gives the opportunity to better study the soil stress state close to the pile and to compare the loads measured as being applied to the piles by the laterally spreading soils with those suggested by the JRA design code. This test data shows that lateral stresses much greater than one might expect from calculations based on the residual strength of liquefied soil may be applied to piles in flowing liquefied slopes owing to the dilative behaviour of the liquefied soil. It is shown at least for the particular geometry studied that the current JRA design code can be un-conservative by a factor of three for these dilation-affected transient lateral loads.

  • Environmental monitoring sub-system has been developed using gas sensor module, Bluetooth module and PDA phone. The gas sensor module consists of $NO_2or$ CO gas sensor and signal processing chips. Gas sensor is composed of the micro-heater, sensing electrode and sensing material. Metal oxide nano-material was selectively deposited on a substrate with micro-heater and was integrated to the gas sensor module. The change in resistance of the metal oxide nano-material due to exposure of oxidizing or deoxidizing gases is utilized as the principle of this gas sensor operation mechanism. This variation detected in the gas sensor module was transferred to the PDA phone by way of Bluetooth module.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish the category of SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems, technologies and application fields, thus to provide the world-wide trend in SAR research and development activities by analysing SAR-related journal papers. This paper presents an analysis result of SAR-related journal papers published from the late 1960s to early 2005. Abstracts and indices of 2665 peer-reviewed, English journal papers published in 243 journals were collected from the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts and classified into the categories according to the system, technique, and application field. Statistics on each category were provided so that one can understand the historical and on-going development in SAR systems, techniques, and a variety of application fields such as land, ocean, cryosphere and atmosphere. This statistical analysis data would be a valuable guideline to establish a future SAR system application and satellite manoeuvering policy in Korea.

Investigating the cosmic evolution of the black hole mass-bulge luminosity scaling relation

  • We investigate the cosmic evolution of the black hole mass-bulge luminosity relation with a sample of 52 moderate-luminosity AGNs at $z{\simeq}0.36$ and $z{\simeq}0.57$, corresponding to look-back times of 4 and 6 Gyrs. By employing robust multi-component spectral and structural decomposition methods to the obtained high-quality Keck spectra and high-resolution HST images, black hole masses ($M_{BH}$) are estimated from the Hbeta broad emission line with the 5100A nuclear luminosity, and bulge luminosities ($L_{bul}$) are derived from the surface photometry. Based on these consistent measurements, we constrain the redshift evolution of the $M_{BH}-L_{bul}$ relation by performing the Monte Carlo simulations designed to account for selection effects. We provide implications of our results in terms of the black hole-galaxy co-evolution and discuss possible bulge growth mechanisms.
