  • The octopus type oligo-hydroxypropylene glycol ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosides were successfully synthesized in this studies: the sterospecific compound of allyl 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-O-acetyl-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosides (1) was deacetylated with NaOMe in MeOH lead to allyl-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (2) which was perallylated and followed by hydroboration and subsequent oxidation afforded (3-hydroxy-propyl) 2, 3, 4, 6-tetraO(3-hydroxy-propyl)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (4). As a result, not only allylpropylene glycol ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosides (5, 7, and 9) but also hydroxypropylene glycol ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosides (6, 8, and 10) were synthesized by repeated sequential perallylation followed by hydroboration/oxidation.

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The lower airways contain a rich and diverse microbiome, which may play a significant regulatory role in both health and disease. In COPD, the microbiome becomes perturbed, causing dysbiosis. Increased representation of members in the Proteobacteria phylum and certain members in the Firmicutes phylum has been associated with increased risk of exacerbations and mortality. Therapies such as inhaled corticosteroids and azithromycin may modulate the airway microbiome or its metabolites in patients with COPD. This paper provides an up-to-date overview of the airway microbiome and its importance in the pathophysiology of COPD and as potential therapeutic target in the future.

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects close to 400 million people worldwide and is the 3rd leading cause of mortality. It is a heterogeneous disorder with multiple endophenotypes, each driven by specific molecular networks and processes. Therapeutic discovery in COPD has lagged behind other disease areas owing to a lack of understanding of its pathobiology and scarcity of biomarkers to guide therapies. Single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is a powerful new tool to identify important cellular and molecular networks that play a crucial role in disease pathogenesis. This paper provides an overview of the scRNA-seq technology and its application in COPD and the lessons learned to date from scRNA-seq experiments in COPD.

  • Plunge milling process is used for machining hole and is widely used in aerospace, automobile, and die/mold industries. The cutter is fed in the direction of spindle axis which has the highest structural rigidity. The kinematics of plunge milling differs from the traditional turning and milling in aspect of tool engagement and chip generation. This paper proposes the mechanistic cutting force model for plunge milling. Uncut chip thickness is calculated using the present cutter edge position and the previous cutter edge position. Instantaneous cutting force coefficients, which depend only on instantaneous uncut chip thickness, are derived based on the mechanistic approach. The developed cutting force model is verified through comparison of the predicted and the measured cutting forces.

  • Mechanisms of competition between two canopy algae and an understory alga were investigated by a field manipulative experiment using artificial thalli. The study was carried out in the upper intertidal zone at Nudibranch Point in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, where two fucoids, Fucus gardneri and Pelvetiopsis limitata, and a turf red alga, Mazzaella cornucopiae, were dominant in the algal community. The experiment was designed to test three hypotheses, shading, whiplash, and allelopathy, imposed by potential fucoid effects on M. cornucopiae. Only the shading effect was significant, indicating that adult fucoid thalli reduced. M. cornucopiae biomass underneath the fucoids. Results indicated that reversal of competitive dominance existed between F. gardneri and M. cornucopiae depending on the life history stage of the competitors. By including the turf alga's effects on the fucoids, the well-balanced and non-hierarchical interaction networks among the major macroalgae support the high likelihood of species coexistence in the community.

  • Symplocarpus koreanus (Araceae; Orontioideae) from Korea is described as new. Symplocarpus koreanus has long been considered to be conspecific with S. renifolius in Japan, but phylogenetic, morphological, and cytological data indicate its taxonomic distinction. Compared to S. renifolius, S. koreanus has a much smaller spathe and more spherical spadix with fewer, smaller flowers. Previous phylogenetic studies also suggested that S. koreanus is more closely related to nonthermogenic S. nipponicus than to S. renifolius in Japan. Like its nonthermogenic sister species, S. nipponicus, in Korea and Japan, S. koreanus is diploid (2n = 2x = 30), while S. renifolius in Japan is tetraploid (2n = 4x = 60). A detailed species description, geographical distribution, major morphological differences between the species and a dichotomous key to the species in eastern Asia are provided.

  • The diversity of the denitrifying bacterial populations in Daejeon Sewage Treatment Plant was examined using a culture-dependent approach. Of the three hundred and seventy six bacterial colonies selected randomly from agar plates, thirty-nine strains that showed denitrifying activity were selected and subjected to further analysis. According to the morphological and biochemical properties, the thirty nine isolates were divided into seven groups. This grouping was supported by an unweighted pair group method, using an arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis with fatty acid profiles. Restriction pattern analysis of 16S rDNA with four endonucleases (AluI, BstUI, MspI and RsaI) again revealed seven distinct groups, consistent with those defined from the morphological and biochemical properties and fatty acid profiles. Through the phylogenetic analysis using the 16S rDNA partial sequences, the main denitrifying microbial populations were found to be members of the phylum, Proteobacteria; in particular, classes Gammaproteobacteria (Aeromonas, Klebsiella and Enterobacter) and Betaproteobacteria (Acidovorax, Burkholderia and Comamonas), with Firmicutes, represented by Bacillus, also comprised a major group.
