  • The purpose of this study is to explore high school students' environmental literacy and from its result, to suggest ways to reform environmental education. 1047 students from Seoul and Kyeongki province participated in the survey. The questionnaire consisted of four criteria of environmental literacy including knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior. The result was analyzed and the factors which affect high school students environmental literacy were explored. From this result, we made suggestions to improve environmental education as follows. First, environmental education in school should focus on knowledge criterion. Though school environmental education has been helpful for students to build environmental literacy in attitude and behavior criteria, its effect has not been good enough in knowledge criterion. Second, science education can enhance students' environmental literacy. Students who like science best and students who belong to science major classes were reported to possess better understanding in knowledge criterion. Also, students who like life science appeared to have a more positive attitude in environmental literacy. Third, informal education must be considered to form students' environmental literacy. In particular, the effect of mass media is inarguable. Thus, we should find a way to link formal education and informal education to improve environmental education. Fourth, high school students' interest in the environment must be encouraged since it is evident that higher interest would result in better outcome in environmental education.

  • This research was conducted to assess the effects of an engineering education accreditation program devised by the University of Seoul on higher education outcomes by comparing and analyzing the evaluation results of engineering accredited students (31) and those who are not accredited (47) with the OECD AHELO (Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes) in 2013. The AHELO assessment tool consisted of 25 multiple-choice questions which evaluated generic skill-learning outcomes, also using contextual surveys to establish the students' backgrounds. The results were evaluated statistically. In the results from the multiple-choice exam for generic skill learning outcomes, accredited students scored 1.35 points higher than non-accredited students. Secondly, according to the contextual survey related to students' university education experience, such as lectures, seminars, group projects, and online tutoring, it was found that accredited students were provided more activities in seminars and group projects. Moreover, for class activities, more of these were provided to accredited students, especially in the areas of assortment-structuralization and teamwork-based activities. Thirdly, according to the contextual survey results related to participation in class, specifically regarding asking questions and participating in discussions, interacting with the professor, and opportunities for study time, there were no recognizable differences between accredited and non-accredited students, However, while accredited students at least had opportunities to gain experience in most areas, there were some areas for which education resources were not provided to non-accredited students. Therefore, for the University of Seoul, our results imply that accredited students may show better performance in the areas of academic accomplishment and in their educational environment as compared to non-accredited students. These results demonstrate that the engineering education accreditation program positively contributes to employment competitiveness while also improving the necessary global standards of higher education outcomes.

  • This study was initiated to understand what students know, how they feel, and how they act in the perspectives of environmental literacy. This study takes it a very serious problem that there has been no data about Korean students’status of environmental literacy so far. Based on the correct diagnosis of Korean students’ environmental literacy, environmental education in Korea, including national curriculum, teaching materials and strategy, would take the right way. This study accepts Simmon (1995)’s framework of environmental literacy, consisting of 5 areas, environmental knowledge, skills, affect, and behavior, which is consistent with general goals of environmental education. This study analyzed the relationship between areas in environmental literacy and factors contributing to improving students’ environmental literacy. This study also checked which factors, including age, gender, parents’ schooling, environmental education in schools, and students’ science-related attributes, contributed to improving students’ environmental literacy. The results of this study will help science educators keep in mind how important it is to teach science from the perspectives of environmental literacy.

The study is based on the assumption that students' dietary behavior, nutrition knowledge and weight-control are considerably influenced by whether they get nutrition education or not. A total of 495 students aged between $14{\sim}16$ (249 boys and 246 girls) were surveyed one middle school located Siheungsi, Gyeonggido. The survey reveals that 55.4% of the boy students and 63.0% of the girl students have been provided nutrition education in curriculum related to nutrition, for instance home economics, technology class, and/or some other classes. The results showed that the students who have been provided nutrition education don't skip breakfast and have three meals regularly(p<0.05). The score of dietary behavior is based on Mini-Dietary Assessment. The average score of the students who have been provided nutrition education is higher than the students who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.01), meaning the nutrition education are affected positively on dietary behavior. The average score of students' knowledge of nutrition is as follows. The average score of the students who have been provided nutrition education is 5.0/10, while the average score of the students who have never been provided nutrition education is 3.9/10. The gap of the average score does come up to an inevitable conclusion that the students who have been provided nutrition education are supposed to get higher score than those who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.0001). • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students in natural science track and engineering major university students' perceptions about the writing and composition education. A total of 318 high school students in natural science track from two high schools in a metropolitan area and 447 university students majoring in engineering from three universities participated in the survey and asked to response their perceived status and needs of writing education for science-engineering track. The survey instrument, developed by Lee et al.(2009), was used for this study. The data was analyzed through the SPSS 18.0 program for Windows for Multiple Response Frequency Analysis, Descriptive Statistics, Independent Samples t-test, and One-way Analysis of Variance. The results indicated that high school students relatively perceived that writing education was less necessary compared to university students. In addition, high school students found writing less difficult than university students do. In related to studying their experience with writing and composition education, almost no high school students have taken writing classes and university students have taken an average of one class. Most university students who took writing classes took basic writing classes that were not programmed for students in Science and Engineering. In the basic survey to revitalize writing and composition education for Science and Engineering students in different majors, the level of writing and composition education required by students in each major was different. Writing was considered most necessary for students majoring in Chemical Engineering, followed by students majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Engineering. The study of writing and composition education for high school and college should extend to studies on teachers or professors who teach writing, studies on contents and methods of writing education, and studies on the development of writing programs for different majors in university.
