  • Coefficient of determination $R^2$ is most frequently used descriptive measure in practical use of linear regression analysis. But there have been controversies on defining this measure in the cases of linear regression without the intercept, weighted linear regression and robust linear regression. Several authors such as Kvalseth(1985) and Willet and Singer(1988) proposed many variations of $R^2$ to meet the situations. However, theire measures are not satisfactory due to the lack of a universal principle. In this study, we propose a unfied approach to defining the coefficient of determination $R^2$ using the concept of likelihood distance. This new measure is in good accordance with typical $R^2$ in linear regression and, moreover, can be applied to nonlinear regression models and generalized linear models such as logit and log-linear models.

  • Volumetric capacity metrics at cryogenic condition are critical for technological and commercial development. It must be calculated and reported in a uniform and consistent manner to allow comparisons among different materials. In this paper, we propose a simple and universal protocol for the determination of volumetric capacity of sorbent materials at cryogenic condition. Usually, the sample container volume containing porous sample at RT can be directly determined by a helium expansion test. At cryogenic temperatures, however, this direct helium expansion test results in inaccurate values of the sample container volume for microporous materials due to a significant helium adsorption, resulting significant errors in hydrogen uptake. For reducing this container volume error, therefore, we introduced and applied the indirect method such as 'volume correction using a non-porous material', showing a reliable cold volume correction.

  • This paper describes a study of the collision of hard steel spheres against aluminium thin circular plates at speeds up to 140 m/s. The tests were monitored by a high speed camera and a chronoscope, which allowed the determination of the ballistic limit and the plate deformation pattern. Quasi-static material parameters were obtained from tests on a universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical characterization of two aluminium alloys were conducted in a split Hopkinson pressure bar. Using a damage model, the perforation of the plates was simulated by finite element analysis. Axisymmetric, shell and solid elements were employed with various parameters of the numerical analysis being thoroughly discussed, in special, the dynamic model parameters. A good agreement between experiments and the numerical analysis was obtained.

  • Ab initio periodic Hartree-Fock calculations with the full potential and minimum basis set are applied to interpretation of scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) images on 1TVTe2. Our results show that the simulated STM image shows asymmetry while the simulated AFM image shows the circular electron densities at the bright spots without asymmetry of electron density to agree with the experimental AFM image. The bright spots of both the STM and AFM images of VTe2 are associated with the surface Te atoms, while the patterns of bright spots of STM and AFM images are different.

  • A theory is given for determining the molecular weights of block copolymers from the experimental elution volume in GPC. Interaction effect between a sample of block copolymer and a column packing material as well as the size effect are separately considered for the first time applying the partial exclusion mechanism proposed by Dawkins. The molecular weight determination shows 6${\%}$ standard-deviation from the molecular weights measured by an osmometric method for eight block copolymers, which is much more improved result than other methods, e.g., the universal plot method (13 ${\%}$) and the Runyon's method (12 ${\%}$). The reason which explains the better result is that our theory takes into account the interaction effect correctly.

  • A general and universal detection method, which can be used in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and flow injection analysis (FIA) system for the determination of any metal ions complexing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), is demonstrated. Pulsed amperometric detection scheme is applied in a flow-through thin layer electrochemical cell at an Au working electrode. Fluctuation of peak current level at the same flow rate of carrier solution is minimized at this solid working electrode, whereas not at a dropping mercury electrode. Removal of dissolved oxygen can be omitted with this detection method, which is a required step for cathodic detection methods. Also, a group of metal ions can be determined selectively and indirectly with this detection scheme.

  • The Modigliani-Miller Proposition II (MM2) is a cornerstone in the field of corporate finance, positing that in a frictionless environment with perfect capital markets, the cost of equity capital is linearly related to a firm's leverage. This paper critically re-evaluates this proposition, particularly examining the determination of the cost and value of equity. We find that under specific circum-stances, especially when the value of a tax shield is influenced by endogenous variables, the cost and value of equity may be ambiguous. This calls into question the universal applicability of MM2. Our research offers new perspectives on the theoretical underpinnings of financial management and underscores the significance of situational factors in the practical application of these theories.

  • Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been widely used to estimate potential soil loss because USLE is a simple and reliable method. The rainfall erosivity factor (R factor) explains rainfall characteristics. R factors, cited in the Bulletin on the Survey of the Erosion of Topsoil of the Ministry of Environment in the Republic of Korea, are too outdated to represent current rainfall patterns in the Republic of Korea. Rainfall datasets at one minute intervals from 2013 to 2017 were collected from fifty rainfall gauge stations to update R factors considering current rainfall condition. The updated R factors in this study were compared to the previous R factors which were calculated using the data from 1973 to 1996. The coefficient of determination between the updated and the previous R factors shows 0.374, which means the correlation is not significant. Therefore, it was concluded that the previous R factors might not explain current rainfall conditions. The other remarkable result was that regression equations using annual rainfall data might be inappropriate to estimate reasonable R factors because the correlation between annual rainfall and the R factors was generally unsatisfy.

  • The present study is focused on improving the methodology for the determination of parameters involved in USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation) based on distributed system concept and investigation of sediment delivery ratio. Generally the distributed system concept consists of grid networks throughout the watershed and sediment can be traced from grid to rid in the direction of the steepest descent. The sediment yield data together with physical data of 10 small irrigation reservoirs in Kyounggi-Do are collected. After the sediment delivery ratio of a grid is defined to be related tothe fraction of forested or covered with delivery proofing area of the grid, the preportionality coefficient(C$_1$) is introduced. The distributed system model is calibrated using the available data for 8 reservoirs and is verified with the data for the ramaining 2 reservoirs, and regression analysis is made to express the proportionality coefficient $C_1$ in terms of watershed physical characteristics. By applying this results the verification of the distributed system model for 2 reservoirs showed a fair result, which justifies the applicability of the proposed method in the present study.

  • Soil erosion processes are affected by weather factors, such as rainfall, temperature, wind, and humidity. Among these factors, rainfall directly influences soil erosion by breaking away soil particles. The kinetic energy of rainfall and water flow caused by rain entrains and transports soil particles downstream. Therefore, in order to estimate soil erosion, it is important to accurately determine the rainfall erosivity factor(R) in RUSLE(Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation). The objective of this study is to evaluate the average annual R using 14 years(2002~2015) of 1 minute rainfall data from 55 KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) weather stations. The R results from 1 min rainfall were compared with previous R studies using 1 h rainfall data. The determination coefficients($R^2$) between R calculated using 1 min rainfall data and annual rainfall were 0.70-0.98. The estimation of 30 min rainfall intensity from 1 min rainfall data showed better $R^2$ results than results from 1 h rainfall data. For estimation of physical spatial rain erosivity(R), distribution of annual rainfall was estimated by IDW(Inverse Distance Weights) interpolation, taking elevation into consideration. Because of the computation burden, the R calculation process was programmed using the python GUI(Graphical User Interface) tool.
