As an alternative approach to evaluate the unit heating load for apartment houses, we newly developed and proposed unit building method. The new method, which calculates the heating load of an apartment building as a whole, conceptually corresponds to integral analysis of building heat loss, while the existing unit apartment method to differential analysis. Four typical building models of Korean-style apartment house and two dynamic load calculation programs were selected to validate the present method under realistically imposed conditions. Eight sets of unit heating load calculated respectively by unit building and unit apartment methods showed excellent agreements regardless of building model and simulation program. It is expected that the unit building method can take the place of the unit apartment method due to fewer modeling assumptions as well as less computational efforts. Additional calculations to investigate the effects of various parameters on unit heating load yield good consistencies with known facts, and re-confirm the validity.
This research analyzed the runoff patterns and estimated unit loads of selected pollutatnts using monitored data conducted for three years in a bridge area. Three estimating methods; the arithmetic average method, the regression method and the rainfall class method were used to estimate the unit load. Results of three estimating methods were compared with the unit pollutant loads from landuses in Korea and the unit pollutant loads from urban watersheds in Milwaukee, USA. Unit load using the arithmetic mean method were found to be overestimated. In terms of TSS, unit loads of two estimate were half lower than that of USA. Estimated TN and TP unit loads of three estimate were lower than that of Ministry of Environment in Korea.

The unit quantity is an important factor influencing the durability, workability, and quality of concrete. Methods for measuring the unit quantity include a high frequency heating method, a unit volume mass method, a capacitance method, and a microwave method. However, these methods have disadvantages of poor measurement method, time required, and accuracy, and a relatively experimental method compensating for these disadvantages was used to measure the unit quantity using a high frequency main sensor (FDR) capable of simple and fast measurement. In addition, the unit quantity was evaluated by analyzing the measurement data through deep learning.

The unit quantity that affects the workability, shrinkage cracking, and durability of concrete is an important factor. Methods for measuring the unit quantity include a high frequency heating method, a capacitance method, a unit volume mass method, and a simple method. However, these methods have the disadvantage of poor measurement method, time required, and precision. To solve this problem, a relatively simple and fast measurement method was adopted to compensate for the shortcomings through a Frequency Domain Reflection (FDR) sensor, and the unit quantity was used. In addition, the measurement data was analyzed by deep learning to evaluate the unit quantity of concrete.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP) accident, level 3 probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) has emerged as an important task in order to assess the risk level of the multi-unit NPPs in a single nuclear site. Accurate calculation of the radionuclide concentrations and exposure doses to the public is required if a nuclear site has multi-unit NPPs and large number of people live near NPPs. So, there has been a great need to develop a new method or procedure for the fast and accurate offsite consequence calculation for the multi-unit NPP accident analysis. Since the multi-unit level 3 PSA is being currently performed assuming that all the NPPs are located at the same position such as a center of mass (COM) or base NPP position, radionuclide concentrations or exposure doses near NPPs can be drastically distorted depending on the locations, multi-unit NPP alignment, and the wind direction. In order to overcome this disadvantage of the COM method, the idea of a new multiple location (ML) method was proposed and implemented into a new tool MURCC (multi-unit radiological consequence calculator). Furthermore, the MURCC code was further improved for the multi-unit level 3 PSA that has the arbitrary number of multi-unit NPPs. The objectives of this study are to (1) qualitatively and quantitatively compare COM and ML methods, and (2) demonstrate the strength and efficiency of the ML method. The strength of the ML method was demonstrated by the applications to the multi-unit long-term station blackout (LTSBO) accidents at the four-unit Vogtle NPPs. Thus, it is strongly recommended that this ML method be employed for the offsite consequence analysis of the multi-unit NPP accidents.
The objective of this paper is to suggest a new quantification method for multi-unit probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) that removes the overestimation error caused by the existing delete-term approximation (DTA) based quantification method. So far, for the actual plant PSA model quantification, a fault tree with negates have been solved by the DTA method. It is well known that the DTA method induces overestimated core damage frequency (CDF) of nuclear power plant (NPP). If a PSA fault tree has negates and non-rare events, the overestimation in CDF drastically increases. Since multi-unit seismic PSA model has plant level negates and many non-rare events in the fault tree, it should be very carefully quantified in order to avoid CDF overestimation. Multi-unit PSA fault tree has normal gates and negates that represent each NPP status. The NPP status means core damage or non-core damage state of individual NPPs. The non-core damage state of a NPP is modeled in the fault tree by using a negate (a NOT gate). Authors reviewed and compared (1) quantification methods that generate exact or approximate Boolean solutions from a fault tree, (2) DTA method generating approximate Boolean solution by solving negates in a fault tree, and (3) probability calculation methods from the Boolean solutions generated by exact quantification methods or DTA method. Based on the review and comparison, a new intersection removal by probability (IRBP) method is suggested in this study for the multi-unit PSA. If the IRBP method is adopted, multi-unit PSA fault tree can be quantified without the overestimation error that is caused by the direct application of DTA method. That is, the extremely overestimated CDF can be avoided and accurate CDF can be calculated by using the IRBP method. The accuracy of the IRBP method was validated by simple multi-unit PSA models. The necessity of the IRBP method was demonstrated by the actual plant multi-unit seismic PSA models.

The risk of multi-unit nuclear power plants (NPPs) at a site has received considerable critical attention recently. However, current probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) procedures and computer code do not support multi-unit PSA because the traditional PSA structure is mostly used for the quantification of single-unit NPP risk. In this study, the main purpose is to develop a multi-unit Level 2 PSA method and apply it to full-power operating six-unit OPR1000. Multi-unit Level 2 PSA method consists of three steps: (1) development of single-unit Level 2 PSA; (2) extracting the mapping data from plant damage state to source term category; and (3) combining multi-unit Level 1 PSA results and mapping fractions. By applying developed multi-unit Level 2 PSA method into six-unit OPR1000, site containment failure probabilities in case of loss of ultimate heat sink, loss of off-site power, tsunami, and seismic event were quantified.
Pollutant unit load (unit-load) reported by Ministry of Environment (MOE) in 1995 has been a useful method for watershed management and environmental policy decision. The unit-load has been estimated using effective rainfall ratio method. However, reliability of unit-load determined by the method has been criticized especially for paddy field and upland conditions. In this paper the unit-load of paddy field estimated by effective rainfall ratio method was compared with continuous monitoring data. Annual loads was simulated by the method choosing 5~6 storm events randomly from whole events collected. Probability distribution of difference between results by the method and measured data was investigated. The results showed that unit-load derived by the method was generally lesser than measured unit-load and showed wide variations. Therefore, unit-load estimation of paddy fields by effective rainfall ratio method need caution.

This paper presents a new method for solving a long term unit commitment problem including hydro and pumped storage hydro units in a large scale power system. The proposed method makes it possible to get variable power of hydro and pumpde storage hydro units and results in the better unit commitment with good convergency. Moreover this paper proposes an unit commitment algorithm to consider variable power of these units effectively by Lagrangian Relaxation method. By applying the proposed method to the test system and the real system, it is verified the usefulness of this method.
A practical method is derived for determining the unit hydrograph and S-curve from complex storm events by using a smoothed unit kernel approach. The using a unit kernel yields more convenient way of constructing a unit hydrograph and its S-curve than a conventional method. However, with use of real data, the unit kernel oscillates and is unstable so that a unit hydrograph and S-curve cannot easily obtained. The use of non-parametric ridge regression with a Laplacian matrix is suggested for deriving an event averaged unit kernel which reduces the computational efforts when dealing with the Nash instantaneous unit hydrograph as a basis of the kernel. A method changing the unit hydrograph duration is also presented. The procedure shown in this work will play an efficient role when any unit hydrograph works is involved.
