  • For the accurate inspection of the resources and space in the ocean, the method of locating the measurement equipments in the seafloor and retrieving these equipments later after a certain period of time. is generally used. In this method, the reliability of retrieving measurement equipments is very important. In our proposed remotely-controlled acoustic release system, an underwater ultrasonic wave recognition algorithm by which we can recognize the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environment changes is developed, and a battery is used for the reduction of electric power consumption. we show the effectiveness of our proposed system through experimental results.

  • This paper proposes an indirect fault detection method for an onboard degaussing coil system, installed to reduce the underwater magnetic field from the ferromagnetic hull. The method utilizes underwater field signals measured at specific magnetic treatment facilities instead of using time-consuming numerical field solutions in a three-dimensional space. An equivalent magnetic charge model combined with a material sensitivity formula is adopted to predict fault coil locations. The purpose of the proposed method is to yield reliable data on the location and type of a coil breakdown even without information on individual degaussing coils, such as dimension, location and number of turns. Under several fault conditions, the method is tested with a model ship equipped with 20 degaussing coils.

  • A new milling machine was designed and manufactured for underwater cutting of rotary specimen racks(RSR) used in the Korea Research Reactor. To cut out intermediate level radioactive stainless steel parts from RSR effectively and safely, the machine was designed to be operated in four directions of X, Y, Z axes and a rotation upon Z axis. The stress and displacement of main frame were simulated by using a structural analysis tool(Design Space) and the pressure of clamping device was evaluated.

  • For underwater milling of parts of nuclear reactor, a waterproof main spindle system was developed. which used a servo meter. Particularly, a waterproof system is available to cope with emergencies such as an electricity failure so that it prevents hazards from cutting radioactive materials. A developed spindle was designed to be capable of horizontal and vertical cutting and structural analysis was conducted with a FEM tool(Design Space) when the forces were loaded in each axis-direction.

  • This paper presents a study of position tracing system for Underwater Vehicle Robots(UVR) that is inspecting an atomic furnace. This system development is the basic research for the purpose of position estimation of UVR and preventing that UVR crash into the wall of an atomic furnace. For this purpose, Pan/Tilt Unit that is attached Laser is pointing PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) Sensor which is stuck to the upper side of UVR. Through this action, we can find the Position of UVR. In this paper, we construct the system for aiming the laser pointer at PSD Sensor using pan/tilt and study the optimum algorithm for finding the optional position that is located at the space which is pointable area by Laser device.

  • Crowd behaviors on cyber underwater environment are often produced in entertainment contents, such as films and games. It is easy for us to come in contact with the scenes appearing a lot of characters as digital films and animation works are increased gradually, owing to developing of computer graphics. Though the processing a scene of crowd and the behavior system of crowd, related to the processing techniques of crowd behavior in cyber space, have been implemented so far, the research for developing the natural crowd behavior simulator can not be still satisfying. In this paper, we designed a realistic and efficient Fish Schooling Behavior Simulator for the contents production of cyber underwater environment, which showed each type of fish behavior in cyber underwater smartly, and which generated the animating the behavior automatically, reducing the time and cost.

  • This paper discusses the structural design and analysis of a 6,000 meters depth-rated capable deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) system. The UUV system is currently under development by Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute(MOERI), Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI). The UUV system is composed of three vehicles - a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and a Launcher - which include underwater equipment. The dry weight of the system exceeds 3 tons hence it is necessary to carry out the optimal design of structural system to ensure the minimum weight and sufficient space within the frame for the convenient use of the embedded equipments. In this paper, therefore, the structural design and analysis of the ROV and launcher frame system were carried out, using the optimizing process. The cylindrical pressure vessels for the ROV were designed to resist the extreme pressure of 600 bars, based on the finite element analysis. The collapse pressure for the cylindrical pressure vessels was also checked through a theoretical analysis.

  • Stirling engines are regarded as an efficient and promising power system for underwater devices. Currently, many researches on one-dimensional model is used to evaluate thermodynamic performance of Stirling engine, but in which there are still some aspects which cannot be modeled with proper mathematical models such as mechanical loss or auxiliary power. In this paper, a four-cylinder double-acting Stirling engine for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) is discussed. And a one-dimensional model incorporated with empirical equations of mechanical loss and auxiliary power obtained from experiments is derived while referring to the Stirling engine computer model of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The P-40 Stirling engine with sufficient testing results from NASA is utilized to validate the accuracy of this one-dimensional model. It shows that the maximum error of output power of theoretical analysis results is less than 18% over testing results, and the maximum error of input power is no more than 9%. Finally, a Stirling engine for UUVs is designed with Schmidt analysis method and the modified one-dimensional model, and the results indicate this designed engine is capable of showing desired output power.

  • Robust and high speed underwater communication is severely limited when compared to communications in terrestial. In free space, RF communication operates over long distances at high data rates. However, the obstacle in seawater is the severe attenuation due to the conducting nature. Acoustic modems are capable of long range communication up to several tens of kilometers, but it has low data-rate, high power consumption and low propagation speed. An alternative means of underwater communication is based on optics, wherein high data rates are possible. In this paper, the characteristics of underwater channel in the range of visible wavelength is investigated. And the possibility of optical wireless communication in underwater is also described. The LED-based transceiver and CMOS sensor module are integrated in the system, and the performance of image transmission was demonstrated.

  • In this paper, and estimation method for estimating the states of underwater vehicle systems with external unknown disturbance is proposed. First, the dynamics of underwater vehicle are induced by Taylor series expansion in the vertical plane and horizontal plane, respectively. For constructing the system model, the external efforts, i.e., the sea surface disturbances, the current, wave and etc., are regarded as external unknown disturbances. Thus the disturbance is added as external input into state-space form of underwater vehicle system. To estimate the state of systems with unknown disturbance, a disturbance observer which does not effected the external unknown input is proposed, and the existence condition for the observer is given. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed disturbance observer for robust control of underwater vehicle systems is verified by using numerical simulation.
