Going underwater is supposed to begin with the history of human beings. At first it was confined to relatively shallow level, less than several meters by holding breath. Recently, deep level diving has been necessary for such purpose as construction, maritime salvage, military operations, research and sports by using SCUBA(self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) equipment. As one goes down into water, the pressure on the diver is increased due to water pressure with depth, usually 1 atm for each 10 m water level. In deep water, mixed gas or nitrox(EAN, enriched air nitrox) could be applied for the divers lest they should get disease due to high pressure. Of these, the former is usually composed of oxygen and inert gas like helium or hydrogen, the latter contains higher oxygen content than that in normal air in which the oxygen concentration is designated by the character "EAN" followed by vol. % of oxygen, for example, "EAN 40" contains 40% of oxygen. In this case, a victim was found at the 39 m below the sea surface breathing air and nitrox in cylinder wrongly marked as EAN 36, which was analyzed to contain 63% of oxygen by GC/TCD. The cause of death could not be exactly related with the oxygen content in the nitrox cylinder, because the accurate depth for the victim to dive was not known, even though the victim was just found at the depth of 39 m. However, the wrongly marked nitrox could be believed to be the main cause of the death at the depth unless there happened any other accident except that during diving.

Optimizing investigation of characteristics of underwater welding by a gravity type arc welding process was experimentally carried out by using six types of domestic coated welding electrodes for welding of domestic marine structural steel plates (KR Grade A-1, SWS41A, SWS41B,) in order to develop the underwater welding techniques in practical use. Main results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The absorption speed of the coating of domestic coated lime titania type welding-electrode became constant at about 60 minutes in water and it was about 0.18%/min during initial 8 minutes of absorption time. 2. Thus, the immediate welding electrode could be used in underwater welding for such a short time in comparison with the joint strength of in-atmosphere-and on-water-welding by dry-, wet-or immediate-welding-electrode. 3. By bead appearance and X-ray inspection, ilmenite, limetitania and high titanium oxide types of electrodes were found better for underwater-welding of 10 mm KR Grade A-1 steel plates, while proper welding angle, current and electrode diameter were 6$0^{\circ}C$, above 160A and 4mm respectively under 28cm/min of welding speed. 4. The weld metal tensile strength or proof stress of underwater-welded-joints has a quadratic relationship with the heat input, and the optimal heat input zone is about 13 to 15KJ/cm for 10mm SWS41A steel plates, resulting from consideration upon both joint efficiency of above-100% and recovery of impact strength and strain. Meanwhile, the optimal heat input zone resulting from tension-tension fatigue limit above the base metal's of SWS41A plates is 16 to 19KJ/cm. Reliability of all the empirical equations reveals 95% confidence level. 6. The microstructure of the underwater welds of SES41A welded in such a zone has no weld defects such as hydrogen brittleness with supreme high hardness, since the HAZ-bond boundary area adjacent to both surface and base metal has only Hv400 max with the microstructure of fine martensite, bainite, pearlite and small amount of ferrite.

The surfgrass Phyllospadix iwatensis is native in the exposed rocky shores of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. In Korea, P. iwatensis is mainly found on the rocky subtidal zone in the central eastern coast. In this study, to examine the ecological characteristics of P. iwatensis, we investigated changes in morphological characteristics, density, biomass, and leaf productivity as well as changes in the underwater irradiance and water temperature of its habitat monthly from August 2017 to July 2018. Underwater irradiance and water temperature showed clear seasonal changes; increases in spring and summer and decreases in fall and winter. Morphological characteristics, shoot density, biomass, and leaf productivities of P. iwatensis exhibited significant seasonal variations, increasing in winter and spring and decreasing in summer and fall months. P. iwatensis leaf productivities both per shoot and per unit area showed significant positive correlations with underwater irradiance. The average leaf productivity of P. iwatensis per area was $6.3{\pm}1.3g\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$, while minimum and maximum values were $2.4{\pm}0.3g\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in February 2018 and $16.4{\pm}4.4g\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in May 2018, respectively. The optimum water temperature for the growth of P. iwatensis in this study was between $12-13^{\circ}C$.
This paper was prepared to investigate the behavior of fragments in underwater torpedo explosion beneath a frigate or surface ship by using an explicit finite element analysis. In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) methodology, called the multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (MM-ALE) approach in LS-DYNA, was employed to obtain the responses of the torpedo fragments and frigate hull to the explosion. The Euler models for the analysis were comprised of air, water, and explosive, while the Lagrange models consisted of the fragment and the hull. The focus of this modeling was to examine whether a worst-case fragment could penetrate the frigate hull located close (4.5 m) to the exploding torpedo. The simulation was performed in two separate steps. At first, with the assumption that the expanding skin of the torpedo had been torn apart by consuming 30% of the explosive energy, the initial velocity of the worst-case fragment was sought based on a well-known experimental result concerning the fragment velocity in underwater bomb explosion. Then, the terminal velocity of the worst-case fragment that is expected to occur before the fragment hit the frigate hull was sought in the second step. Under the given conditions, the possible initial velocities of the worst-case fragment were found to be very fast (400 and 1000 m/s). But, the velocity difference between the fragment and the hull was merely 4 m/s at the instant of collision. This result was likely to be due to both the tremendous drag force exerted by the water and the non-failure condition given to the frigate hull. Anyway, at least under the given conditions, it is thought that the worst-case fragment seldom penetrate the frigate hull because there is no significant velocity difference between them.

This study is an experimental study on how to use phase change materials(PCM) to generate electrical energy for long-term operation of underwater unmanned vehicles. The electrical energy generation method is a volume change and a pressure change that occur as a phase change material changes to a solid or liquid state according to temperature, and the change in pressure creates a flow of fluid to create electrical energy. Polyethylene glycol was used as a phase change material considering the temperature of the ocean. In addition, an electrical energy generating device that converts volume change into pressure at low temperature (1℃~2℃) in solid state and high temperature (21℃~25℃) in liquid state was fabricated. As a result of the experiment, the pressure change according to the phase change rapidly changed between 1 hour and 2 hours, and maintained a pressure of about 24MPa after 4 hours. Through this, it was confirmed that it can be used as a power source for underwater unmanned vehicles using phase change materials and temperature differences. In addition, it was found that a more improved design should be made in order to apply the phase change material to an underwater unmanned vehicle.
This study focuses on the raw material characteristics, including firing temperature and the similarity of clay body, and making techniques on the underwater ceramics from offshore of Taean Mado, the Republic of Korea. The ceramic specimens include various types of celadons, Buncheongwares and white porcelains with very similar physical characteristics. All the clay bodies composed of same mineral phases within mullite and quartz, while cristobalite were also found in some white porcelains. Also, the geochemical composition of the clay body shows regular behavior properties for all the elements consisting of the celadons and Buncheongwares. In contrast, the irregular properties of trace and incompatible elements were found in white porcelains. Therefore, it is presumed that the white porcelains were made using the clay body with different source from the celadons and Buncheongwares. Notably, some white porcelains in low Th content are assumed to be made with clay formed in a different environments. Meanwhile, most of the ceramics had gone through the firing of 1,200 to 1,300℃, with some celadons fired from 1,150℃ to 1,200℃. Also, it can be interpreted as some white porcelains were fired on even up to 1,500℃.
In this study, an flexural test on half-scale spliced PSC-I girder was conducted to verify the efficiency of the long span spliced girder as suggested by the Korean Highway Design Specification. The experimental results showed that the specimens developed a complex failure mode due to flexural-compression and torsional stress. The cracking moment of each girder was higher the experiment than was calulated by the ACI and the ultimate strength were the almost same. To estimate the safety and the structural efficiency of the spliced girder, the proposed Yielding Resistance Index(YRI) and ductility index by American Concrete Institutes were used based on the energy concept. The proposed YRI defined the ratio of crack resisting energy and the total energy calculated from load-displacement relationship. Based on the analysis of YRI and ductility index, the flexural behavior of the spliced girder was found to be efficient. Through the experimental results, the structural behavior of proposed spliced PSC I-type girder for long span bridge was found to be more efficient than the exsisting PSC I-type girders.

The acoustic communication channel in shallow underwater is typically shown as time-varying multipath fading channel characteristics. The received signal through channel transmission cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) owing to multiple components of different time delay and amplitude. To compensate for this, several techniques have been used, and one of them is acoustic equalizer. In this study, we used four equalizers - feed forward equalizer (FFE), decision directed equalizer (DDE), decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and combination DDE with DFE to compensate ISI. And we applied two adaptive algorithms to adjust coefficient of equalizers - normalized least mean square algorithm and recursive least square algorithm. As result, we found that it has a significant performance improvement over 6 dB on SNR in nonlinear equalizer. By combination of DFE and DDE has almost best performance in any case.

The bistatic scattering of an incident wave by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder is of particular interest because it has rarely been studied until the present day. The configuration of a hemi-spherically capped cylinder is similar to naval underwater weapons (submarines, mines, torpedos, etc.), but which is not exactly the same. This paper describes a novel laboratory experiment aimed at direct measurement of bistatic scattering by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder. Bistatic scattering by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder was measured in an acoustic water tank (5m long, 5m wide, 5m deep) using a high frequency projector (120kHz) and hydrophone. Measurements of monostatic scattering were also made under the same conditions. The bistatic scattering pattern by a hemi-spherically capped cylinder was measured against the incident angles $(0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;90^{\circ})$ in order to verify various scattering pattern characteristics by the change of incident angle. The results indicate that the bistatic scattering TS at a wide scattering angle is much stronger than the mono static scattering TS. In bistatic scattering, the forward scattering TS is significantly stronger than the backward scattering TS, and the forward scattering pattern is also broader. In case of seven incident angles, the maximum value of forward scattering TS is about 14dB stronger than that of backward scattering TS. It is also found that forward scattering varies with the incident angle of sound to a much less extent than backscattering, and it is not seriously affected by the incident angle. These features could be the advantages of using forward scattering for detecting underwater targets at long range and increasing detection area and probability.
