  • In this work, modeling and analysis of thermal effects laser drilling under water for ceramics were presented. Laser is a unique tool for machining ceramics due to the characteristic of non-contact material removal. However, ablation by a laser often induces a thermal effect on the material and an increased heat-affected-zone or deposition of debris can be observed on the machined parts. The underwater surrounding improved a heat transfer rate to cooling down the machined part and could prevent any deposition of debris near the machined surfaces and edges. The heat modeling was applied to obtain the temperature distributions as well as temperature gradients between the material and surroundings. The cooling effect of the underwater laser drilling was improved and a more stable temperature distribution was calculated. The actual laser drilling results of ceramic laser drilling were presented to verify the effects of underwater laser drilling.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest environmental guidelines for the conservation of ceramics excavated from underwater. Accordingly, the conditional change of the soluble salt on surface of the excavated ceramics was examined by changing the relative humidity. Examining the relative ratio [high humidity(RH70%+RH80%)/low humidity(RH20%+ RH40%)] for 24 weeks using accumulated conductivity(${\mu}s/cm$), the result showed that the amount of ion elution increased more in high humidity than in low humidity. In particular, the ion elution increased significantly within the celadon sample. In addition, comparing the accumulated conductivity and physical characteristics of the samples in high humidity, the results indicated that the amount of the ion elution is proportioned to the increased rate of the sample's absorption capacity and porosity. Ceramics excavated from underwater has risks of the secondary physical and chemical attacks from remaining salts. Therefore, it is suggested these ceramics be stored in a storage which maintains proper temperature and low humidity conditions. Also, the collections need to be pre-classified according to the properties of the materials.

  • The Tonpilz transducer is one of the essential elements in active sonar application. The characteristics of transducer depend on the piezoelectric ceramics and mechanical elements such as head mass, tail mass, pre-stress rod and so on. One of the important characteristics is electric and mechanical stability of transducer for long term high power transmitting operation. This parer presents the results about long term endurance tests of the underwater acoustic transducer.

  • Once the object has been excavated at underwater condition, it should be subjected to condition that may cause its deterioration. Therefore, it is important that the object immediately keeps stable environment. It means that the object was excavated at underwater and it exposed the deterioration condition, as soon as possible it was not dried on surface, especially metallic and organic material. Iron objects is particularly notorious for rapid disintegration that it kept wet or stored in a stable environment. Ceramics, glass and stone were handled carefully that it prevented physical damage by mishandling. Organic materials of wood, leather, rope, bone must not be allowed to dry out because the creaking, shrinking and warping are well known disintegration. Therefore objects is basis of keeping stable condition in on-site and then it will have to pass through a detailed conservation process in the laboratory.

  • Typical Tonpilz type underwater acoustic transducers making use of piezoelectric ceramics detect the magnitude of an acoustic pressure, a scalar quantity, and convert this pressure into a proportional output voltage. The scalar sensor has no directional sensitivity. In this paper, we have proposed a new vector sensor based on the Tonpilz transducer structure, which is sensitive to both the magnitude and the azimuthal direction of an acoustic wave. Validity of this new design has been confirmed with analytic equations and finite element analyses.
