Naïve Decode-and-Forward Relay Achieves Optimal DMT for Cooperative Underwater Communication

  • Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) characterizes the fundamental relationship between the diversity gain in terms of outage probability and the multiplexing gain as the normalized rate parameter r, where the limiting transmission rate is give by rlog SNR (here, SNR denote the received signal-to-noise ratio). In this paper, we analyze the DMT and performance of an underwater network with a cooperative relay. Since over an acoustic channel, the propagation delay is commonly considerably higher than the processing delay, the existing transmission protocols need to be explained accordingly. For this underwater network, we briefly describe two well-known relay transmissions: decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF). As our main result, we then show that an instantaneous DF relay scheme achieves the same DMT curve as that of multiple-input single-output channels and thus guarantees the DMT optimality, while using an instantaneous AF relay leads at most only to the DMT for the direct transmission with no cooperation. To validate our analysis, computer simulations are performed in terms of outage probability.

Sonar-based yaw estimation of target object using shape prediction on viewing angle variation with neural network

  • This paper proposes a method to estimate the underwater target object's yaw angle using a sonar image. A simulator modeling imaging mechanism of a sonar sensor and a generative adversarial network for style transfer generates realistic template images of the target object by predicting shapes according to the viewing angles. Then, the target object's yaw angle can be estimated by comparing the template images and a shape taken in real sonar images. We verified the proposed method by conducting water tank experiments. The proposed method was also applied to AUV in field experiments. The proposed method, which provides bearing information between underwater objects and the sonar sensor, can be applied to algorithms such as underwater localization or multi-view-based underwater object recognition.

Estimation of Equivalent Circuit Parameters of Underwater Acoustic Piezoelectric Transducer for Matching Network Design of Sonar Transmitter (소나 송신기의 정합회로 설계를 위한 수중 음향 압전 트랜스듀서의 등가회로 파라미터 추정)

  • This paper presents an estimation technique of the equivalent circuit parameters for an underwater acoustic piezoelectric transducer from the measured impedance. Estimated equivalent circuit can be used for the design of the impedance matching network of the sonar transmitter. A fitness function is proposed to minimize the error between the calculated impedance of the equivalent circuit and the measured impedance of the transducer. The equivalent circuit parameters are estimated by using the fitness function and the PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the applications to a sandwich-type transducer and a dummy load. In addition, the impedance matching network is also designed by using the estimated equivalent circuit model.

  • 최근 해양자원의 중요성이 대두됨에 따라, 해양환경을 모니터링 하기 위해 Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks(UW-ASN)가 활발히 연구되고 있다. UW-ASN 는 해양환경에 대한 데이터를 Sensing, gathering 하고 이를 Monitoring Center로 delivering 하는 Mission 을 수행한다. 이 논문에서는 해양에서 수집한 데이터를 수질 자동 측정망(TMS: Tele Monitoring System)에 전송하기 위해, 음파통신을 통해 수신된 해양 데이터를 수질 자동 측정망의 규격에 맞는 데이터로 변환시키고 CDMA 통신을 통해 가상의 TMS에 전송하는 Gateway 구현을 제안한다.

  • Acoustic signal, which is a main carrier of underwater communication, attenuates along the traveled path heavily depending on the frequency as well as inter-node distance. In addition, since it has a long propagation delay, the conventional medium access control (MAC) schemes requiring complex signaling procedures and accordingly heavy overhead messages would not be appropriate in underwater communications. In this paper, we propose a code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme as a solution for MAC of underwater communication and evaluate the performance. A hierarchical data-gathering tree topology is considered and a staggered wake-up pattern is employed for the purpose of energy saving. As a performance measure, the data rate at each level of hierarchical topology is derived.

  • Cooperative multihop communications support effective transmissions over underwater acoustic channels as inferior wireless channels. But the performance of cooperative multihop systems may degrade due to the lack of cooperative nodes at the initial operation time duration. At the initial time duration, the lack of cooperative nodes causes more errors, and the multihop network propagates these errors. In this paper, we apply fountain code to the cooperative multihop system at the initial time duration, and show performance improvements by simulations.

  • In this paper, we proposed Channel Transfer Function estimation based on Delay and Doppler Profile for underwater acoustic OFDM communication system. It improved the estimation accuracy of the channel transfer function by linear time interpolation the change of Scattered Pilot (SP) insertion frequency in the time direction and the time by Delay and Doppler profile that analyzes the multipath situation of the channel investigated the performance of interpolation by simulation and report it. Previous works is inserted SP every 4 OFDM. It was effective under the environment without multipath, but it has observed that the effect of CTF compensation has been lowered in multipath channel condition. In addition to be better when inserted SP every 2 OFDM. But the amount of sending data will be decrease. Therefore, we conducted research to improve 4 OFDM with new interpolator. A computer simulation was performed as a comparison of SP inserted every 4 OFDM, SP inserted every 2 OFDM, and 4 OFDM with new interpolator. the performance of the proposed system is overwhelmingly improved, and the performance is slightly improved even 64 QAM.

  • In the earth more than half of the space filled with water. In that water most of the part is in the form of oceans. The ocean atmosphere determines climate on the land. Combining the Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network (UWASN) system with Internet Of Things (IoT) is called Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT). Using IoUT we can find the changes in the ocean environment. Underwater sensor nodes are used in UWASN. Underwater sensor nodes are constructive in offshore investigation, disaster anticipation, data gathering, assisted navigation, pollution checking and strategic inspection. By using IoT components such as Database, Server and Internet, ocean data can be broadcasted. This paper introduces IoUT architecture and and explains fish forming application scenario with this IoUT architecture.

A Study of a Wideband Acoustic Transducer for Underwater Communication Using 1-3 Type Piezoelectric Transducer (1-3형 압전 복합체를 이용한 광대역 수중 통신용 음향 트랜스듀서에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, many researches in relation to data transmission with faster speed and greater volume, many researches have been carried out on sonar systems for underwater communication. According to these researches, an acoustic transducer for underwater communication requires wide bandwidth properties. In domestic researches for underwater communication sonar, an operating frequency in the range of $20{\sim}40\;kHz$ is used. In this paper, we propose anon-resonance type acoustic transducer for underwater communication. The TVR (transmitting voltage response) characteristics increased linearly as the frequency increased, and the RVS (receiving voltage sensitivity) characteristics were constant as the frequency increased. Traditional techniques for wide bandwidth transducershave a limit and a transmission loss difference at lower and higher frequency operating ranges. In this paper, the new transducer proposed decreased the transmission loss under some conditions. It was optimized with the FE analysis tool (ATILA) and evaluated using the TVR and the RVS characteristics in the range of $10{\sim}90\;kHz$. The value of TVR was 138 dB at 20 kHz and 148 dB at 40 kHz, and the differences was 12 dB. The value of RVS was $195{\pm}2\;dB$ and nearly constant. From theseresults, it is certain that the developed transducers can be used for an underwater communication network in the 1.3 km range with both a 20 kHz bandwidth and 30 kHz center frequency.

  • Multicast has been a key routing service for efficient data dissemination in underwater acoustic sensor networks. In sensor networks, there are several multicast routing protocol which reflects sensor network nature. However, existing routing scheme was not targeted at underwater acoustic sensor networks which is hard to provide battery continually. Therefore, a specialized routing algorithm is essential for acoustic sensor networks. In this paper, we propose angle aided multicast routing algorithm for decreasing routing computation complexity, including virtual Euclidean Steiner point. Simulation results show better performance than exist routing Position Based Multicast, Geographic Multicast Routing. such as low computation capability and limited power consumption.
