The underwater channel is known to offer poor communications channel. The channel medium is highly absorptive and the transmission bandwidth is limited. In addition, the channel is highly frequency selective; the degree of selectiveness depends on a detailed geometry of the channel. Furthermore, the response changes over time as the channel conditions affecting the response such as water temperature, sea surface wind and salinity are time-varying. The transceiver design to deal with the frequency and time selective channel, therefore, becomes very challenging. It has been known that deep fading at certain specific sub-carriers are detrimental to OFDM systems. To mitigate this negative effect, the proposed coded OFDM system employs an LDPC code based modulation. In this paper, we aim 1) to provide a detailed underwater channel model; 2) to design a robust LDPC coded OFDM system; 3) to test the proposed system under a variety of channel conditions enabled by the channel model.

Underwater acoustic communication channel is influenced by environmental parameters such as multipath, background noise and scattering. Therefore, a transmitted signal is influenced by the sea surface and the sea bottom boundaries, and a received signal shows a delay spread. These factors create a noise in the image and degrade the quality of underwater acoustic communication. To solve these problems, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of an underwater acoustic communication model using a denoising auto-encoder used for unsupervised learning. Noise images generated by the underwater multipath channel were collected and used as training data. Experimental results were analyzed as a PSNR parameter that expressed the noise ratio of the two images.

Underwater acoustic(UWA) communication is one of the most difficult field because of several factors such as multipath propagation, high temporal and spatial variability of channel conditions. Therefore, it is important to model and analyze the characteristics of underwater acoustic channel such as multipath propagation, transmission loss, reverberation, and ambient noise. In this paper, UWA communication channel is modeled with a ray tracing method and applied to image transmission. Quadrature phase shift keying(QPSK) and multichannel decision feedback equalizer(DFE) are utilized as phase-coherent modulation method and equalization technique, respectively. The objective is to improve the performance of vertical sensor array than that of single sensor in the viewpoint of bit error rate(BER), constellation output, and received image quality.
Recently, the necessity of underwater acoustic communication and demand for transmitting and receiving various data such as voice or high resolution image data are increasing as well. The performance of underwater acoustic communication system is influenced by underwater channel characteristic. Especially, a delay spread caused by reverberation and multi-path induces the ISI (Inter-Symbol-Interference) and reduces the communication performance. In this paper, we study the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique for robust the delay spread in underwater channel. We also use the clipping method to overcome the performance degradation in high PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio). We confirm the performances of underwater communication system by the underwater channel model simulation model and experiment in small water tank. As a result, the multi-carrier modulation with clipping method presented low BER and the previous single carrier modulation had high BER.
Most underwater acoustic arrays for low frequency operation are deployed vertically, but a mid-range frequency horizontal array system is being developed by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). The horizontal array platform is deployed underwater and kept in place by weather vaning mooring. This is essential because it is nearly impossible to keep a submerged body at a given position in the water without any external force. Hence, the horizontal array platform can maintain the desired position in the presence of a weak tidal current. The objective of this study is to design an underwater platform that can maintain its horizontal position in a weak current. First, the authors investigated various virtual models, selected one of the models, and performed a small model test of the selected model at a basin. We calculated the external forces associated with the 2D motion, and then we conducted a large basin test followed by a circulation water channel test for the manufactured array platform. The results of the simplified 2D motion calculation essentially matched the results of the underwater test.
In this paper, broadband underwater propagation channel modeling based on eigenray analysis is discussed. Underwater channels are often formulated in frequency domain time-harmonic signals, which are impractical for simulating broadband signals in time domain. In this regard, time domain modeling of the underwater propagation channel is required for the simulation of broadband signals, for which the eigenray analysis based on ray tracing, resulting in multipath propagation delays in time-domain, is used in this paper. For discrete time system application, the phase, frequency-dependent loss and non-integer sample delays for each eigenray, are approximated by the finite impulse response of the broadband propagation channel.

In this paper, we first analyze the differences of underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and conventional terrestrial OFDM system, and give a simple introduction of the backgrounds. By considering the real UWA channel environments, the measured channel data is used to generate the UWA channel model and calculate the relative parameters for underwater OFDM systems. Practical least square (LS) based channel estimation with linear interpolation are adopted to obtain the channel state information (CSI) at receiver side. As multi-input multi-output (MIMO) processing techniques, Alamouti code is implemented and evaluated to perform for space time block coding (STBC) and space frequency block coding (SFBC) for UWA OFDM systems with the MIMO configuration of $2{\times}1$, at the same time, $1{\times}2$ maximum ratio combining (MRC) is performed for the purpose of comparison. The simulation results show that, with perfect channel estimation, SFBC failed to work duo to the serious frequency selectivity of UWA channel environments. When the practical channel estimation is applied, in the case of STBC, the proposed 4-column pilot pattern gives better performance about 7dB than SISO system.

Underwater acoustic communication can be applied to various area such as scientific, commercial and military survey using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles. Underwater communication is studying very actively by advanced country like United States. But differ from wireless communication in the air, underwater acoustic communication has some difficult problems, ISI(Inter Symbol Interference) due to multipath and limit of transmission bandwidth due to slow propagation of sound wave. In this paper, SC-FDE and OFDM transmission system for the cancellation of ISI in conjunction with underwater acoustic channel modeling are applied to the underwater simulation of communication. The performance of these methods in the simulation guide to possibility of adopting in underwater acoustic communication algorithm. For this purpose, we compare SER performance of SC-FDE with that of OFDM for modelled underwater channel. Underwater channel is generated by Bellhop model. Simulation results show above 5dB SNR gain at 10-3 SER. And it demonstrate SC-FDE is efficient method for underwater acoustic communication.
The paper presents a numerical underwater channel model developed in MATLAB for estimating the optical link budget between a light emitting diode (LED) based optical transmitter and a photo diode (PD) receiver when operated in the harbor, coastal and deep waters locations in the Bay of Bengal. The water samples are collected at different locations in the Bay of Bengal using a water sampler during an offshore research cruise. The optical attenuation, the main inherent parameter determining the range of the optical communication link is identified for the different waters using an underwater irradiance measurement system in the laboratory. The identified parameters are applied to the numerical model and found that a 10 W LED and a photo diode based system can provide the optical budget required for a horizontal underwater communication range of about 0.5, 14 and 35 m in the harbor, coastal and deep waters locations respectively. By increasing the transmitter power to 50 W, the operating range of the communication link could be increased up to 53 m in deep water locations in the Bay of Bengal.

Researches for oceans are limited to military purpose such as underwater sound detection and tracking system. Underwater acoustic communications with low-probability-of-interception (LPI) covert characteristics were received much attention recently. Covert communications are conducted at a low received signal-to-noise ratio to prevent interception or detection by an eavesdropper. This paper proposed optimal covert communication model based on direct sequence spread spectrum for underwater environments. Spread spectrum signals may be used for data transmission on underwater acoustic channels to achieve reliable transmission by suppressing the detrimental effect of interference and self-interference due to jamming and multipath propagation. The characteristics of the underwater acoustic channel present special problems in the design of covert communication systems. To improve performance and probability of interception, we applied BCJR(Bahl, Cocke, Jelinek, Raviv) decoding method and the direct sequence spread spectrum technology in low SNR. Also, we compared the performance between conventional model and proposed model based on turbo equalization by simulation and lake experiment.
