  • In this paper, an estimation method is presented to determine the equivalent circuit model of an underwater acoustic piezoelectric transducer with multiple resonant modes. A fitness function that includes the coupled resonant effects is proposed to minimize an error between the measured impedance of the transducer and the calculated impedance of the equivalent model. Unknown parameters of the equivalent circuit are estimated by using PSO algorithm. The proposed method is applied to an example transducer of the sandwich type with 3 resonances in the frequency band of interest. The analytical impedance of the estimated equivalent circuit model is compared with the measured impedance of the transducer and the validity of proposed method is verified.

  • A linear array acoustic transducer with 12 tonpilz elements mounted independently on a gradual wedge-shaped tail mass was fabricated, tested and analyzed. The compensated transducer, which is modified by including a series inductance of 137 µH in the developed linear array transducer, attained improved figure of merit (FOM) performance characteristics compared with the uncompensated transducer. The four resonant frequency bands were identified from the measured FOM curve. The FOM response patterns over the frequency ranges of 31 to 40 kHz and 50 to 60 kHz were relatively uniform, whereas sharp resonance peaks were observed at around 73 kHz and 84 kHz. These results indicate that the developed linear array transducer can be used as an enhanced broadband transducer of echo sounder, and the operating frequency can be selected for more effective echo surveys in the fishing ground.

  • Several types of cymbal transducers used for underwater detection have been studied. Representative types are Moonie, convex cymbal, and concave cymbal transducers. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of these three types of transducers for underwater broadband projectors and compared them together. First, the influence of structural variables on the acoustic characteristics of the transducers was analyzed. Based on this, we derived the structure of each transducer type to have a specific center frequency and the maximum bandwidth. As a result of comparing the performance of the optimized transducers, the convex cymbal transducer turned out to be best in terms of both broad bandwidth and high power.

  • In the case of designing an acoustic transducer for high power application, we usually aim to transfer the source electric energy to the output acoustic energy as large as possible. For this purpose, we should match the impedance of the power amplifier to the impedance combined with the acoustic transducer impedance and the radiation impedance. Especially if we have electrical source with almost zero impedance, we need improve the power factor of the acoustic transducer in the load. In this paper, we propose a broad band impedance matching method by the improvement of power factor, which applies ABCD matrix.

  • Typical underwater acoustic transducers detect only the magnitude of an acoustic pressure and they have the limitation of not being able to recognize the direction of the sound signal. Hence, the authors of this paper proposed a new vector sensor structure based on Tonpilz transducers that could detect both the magnitude and the direction of a sound pressure. In the proposed structure, the piezoceramic ring was divided into four segments, and proper combination of the output voltages of the segments in response to the external sound pressure could provide the information on the orientation of the sound source. In this paper, a Tonpilz transducer has been fabricated to have the proposed structure and its characteristics has been measured to confirm the validity of the proposed structure.

  • Magnetostrictive materials are used low-frequency sonar transmitter instead of piezoelectric materials. But it is difficult to analyze due to the nonlinearity and hysteresis of magnetostrictive materials. This paper deals with the program development based on finite element method to model the magnetostrictive tonpilz transducers and to analyze their acoustic characteristics. (omitted)

  • In this paper an identification method is presented to obtain the equivalent electric circuit model of a wideband underwater acoustic piezoelectric vibrator. Unknown parameters involved in the equivalent circuit are indentified using the measured electrical admittances in air. The proposed method is applied to an example transducer. The validity of equivalent circuit model is demonstrated by the comparison between the experimental measurements and analytical calculations of TVR(transmitting voltage response) in water.

  • Recently, side scan sonar system has been developed and operated to survey cable laying, sunken bodies, geometry of sea bottom and so on. It uses the acoustic signals, which are emitted from two transducer arrays, left and right sides, to get geometric information of the specified area. This system consists of transceiver board, towed body, deck unit and GPS receiver. The transceiver board, nested in a watertight canister, controls the transmitting and receiving of the acoustic pulses from transducer arrays. After receiving the scattered signals, it processes BP(Band Pass) filtering, AGC(Automatic Gain Control), TVG(Time Varying Gain) and Heterodyne. The deck init has the signal processing part, A/D converter, power supplier, and real-time monitoring part. The towed body has been designed to satisfy the optimal hydrodynamic behavior during towing, In this paper, brief introductions on the design theory of transceiving part and some results from the field which have been operated recently will be introduced.

  • In the using of FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) developed in home land, we designed and manufactured united FBG acoustic transducers the first in Korea. they are being applied to multi-point signal detection of FBG Hydrophone used Hopper WDM(national patent NO 10-1502954) in the underwater. On united FBG transducers manufactured, we made an demonstrated on respective frequency response peculiarities in the underwater and analyzed the special characters. As the experimental result on frequency response peculiarities, we made it possible underwater acoustic detection on united FBG acoustic transducers type to maximum 30Hz~2.5KHz. it's the optimum conditions of 1.2KHz frequency in detection. And for the purpose of realization on multi-point signal detection on wide scope in the underwater, in the using of WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) method and passive band-pass filter system, established arrays system and succeeded in multi-point underwater acoustic signal detection to the frequency 200Hz~1.3KHz out of the two united type FBG transducers. Additionally, it would be possible directivity detection for the object of its source as the intensity of detection signal varies with the sound source's direction and angle. From now on we prepared a new moment on the practical use study on FBG hydrophone in the future.

  • Systems for underwater environment monitoring and natural resources can be considered as a part of digital convergence where real-time data transmission is possible with the help of underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN). One of key technologies required for the deployment of the systems is underwater acoustic micro modem. In this work, we design and implement an acoustic modem equipped with a commercial omnidirectional transducer. We also make experiments at the northern Han river for the verification of the developed modem. According to the experiments, the modem supports the working distance of 250 m and the data rate of 200 bps with a negligible bit error rate. It is expected that the acoustic modem can be used for various applications based on UWSN in a near future.
