The main considerations in the design and safety assessment case study for Deep & Large size of Tunnel station (대심도 대단면 터널정거장 설계시 주요고려사항 및 안정성 평가에 대한 사례 연구)

  • The design of high-depth and large-section tunnel facilities has been increased lately. The purpose of the design is to avoid inference of existing facilities, enhance public relations and reducing the size of the station, which is advantageous for effective use of underground spaces. Diverse downtown tunnel experience, advanced excavation equipment, reinforcement methods, monitoring technologies and numerical analysis made the design possible. This paper is to introduce the design of high-depth and large-section tunnel facilities via Gimpo airport area of Deagok-Sosa railway BTL project of double-tracking.

Structural Analysis of Arch Anchor Brackets in Ground Anchor Construction (그라운드 앵커공법용 아치형 앵커브라켓의 구조해석)

  • When we excavate an underground to build basement, the ground anchors are needed to prevent collapse of neighboring ground, subsidence and movement. Ground anchor construction required shore sheet piles, wales and struts as to maintain secure excavation. Existing box-type bracket using head part of ground anchor can not be possibly adjustable to the boring angle because the brackets are manufactured with unified angle in a factory. Also, box-type brackets have imperfection and instability caused by inequable force. In this study, a new bracket system is proposed. The bracket's side plate is reinforced and the angle of boring can be controlled. To investigate the structural performance of presented brackets, FEM analysis has been performed by using ANSYS commercial program. As a result, this bracket shows sufficient stability for all angle case and the strength is increased about 24% than existing bracket.

Application of TBM/TBE to Mechanical Excavation in Rock (암반기계굴착공법의 적용연구)

  • As tunnel becomes longer and larger, TBM has become one of the most popular methods of excavatio in rock. This paper describes the degree of operation the degree of availability and penetration rate of TBM and TBE applied in Namsan roadway tunnelling site. Net penetration rate was 1.62m/hr for TBM and 0.72m/hr for TBE. Net penetration rate showed no direct relation to daily advance or penetration time, but the lower bound of penetration rate could be obtained from the relation with daily advance. For both of TBM and TBE, the degree of operation and the degree of availability were 33.8% and 68.6% respectively. Life time of normal cutter was $310m^3$ for TBM and $194m^3$ for TBE, while that of center and gauge cutter was about $50m^3$. When the two machines were compared, TBM showed 80% higher penetration rate, and 40% shorter life time of cutter.

  • Soil and rock improvement and reinforcement techniques are applied to achieve safe tunnel excavation in difficult geological conditions. The Umbrella Arch Method(UAM), one of the auxiliary techniques, is used to reduce ground permeability and improve stabtility of the tunnel by inserting a series of steel pipes into ground around the crown inclined to the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. Additionally, multi-step grouting is added through the steel pipes. UAM combines the advantages of a modern forepoling system with the grouting injection method. This technique has been applied in subway, road and utility tunneling sites for the last few years in Korea. This paper presents the results of analysis of the case studies on ground movements associated with UAM used in the Seoul Subway line 5 constructon site. Improvement of tunnel stability and decrease of ground settlement expected with pipe insertion are also discussed. Finally, the method to minimize ground settlements caused by NATM tunnelling are suggested.

  • Input data play an important role in numerical analyses. However, it is difficult to obtain appropriate data for many reasons. In order to overcome those difficulties, an automatic MPBX(Multi-Position Borehole Extensometer) monitoring system is developed. This system can be applied to the analyses of measured data which include evaluation of the stabiliyt, efficiency of construction and the validity of numerical analyses. At first, the MPBX among field measurement tools is considered in this study. Also, 3-dimension finite element analyses are carried out to verify the influence of geological conditions and excavation sequence on the MPBX displacement. The effect of geological conditons on the displacement can be estimated qualitatively qualitavely from the measured data by plotting displacement vs. depth.

Case Study of Oil Spills in Soil; Oil Concentration Distribution in Soil (토양에 유출된 유류의 오염도 조사에 관한 사례연구)

  • Between 40,000 and 60,000 liters of light oil were spilled when an underground pipe broke at a newly constructed landfill site in coastal area, Korea. Methods were presented to examine the subsurface distribution of the contaminants in hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. As results, large quantities of oil and grease were found to have migrated horizontally at the site. Oil and grease plume at concentrations of 38-88 mg/kg was formed horizontally through silty sand with gravel fill and the vertical movement of the contaminants was thought to be limited to groundwater level between 2 and 4 m corresponding to sea water level. Right after finding the leakage area, the early action of excavation and pumping out the mixture of groundwater and oil was taken and it was proved to be very effective for preventing further contamination. Two months after the leakage, oil and grease in sea water sample near contaminated area was not detectable.

  • In general, it is considered that a pillar between closely-spaced tunnel is sensitive for stress concentration. Stability of a pillar is key factor for excavation of closely-spaced tunnel. In this paper, the study is focused on tracing the behaviors, displacement and plotting damages around tunnels that is modelled with Particle Flow Code, $PFC^{2D}$. Parametric study was performed with changing distance between center of tunnels and coefficient of earth pressure(K). Scaled-model tests were also carried out to validate a numerical analysis model. It was found that $PFC^{2D}$ could show dynamic visualized result in quite good agreement with the experimental test.

  • Rock Mass Rating has been widely applied to the underground tunnel excavation and many other practical problems in rock engineering. However, Rock Mass Rating is hard to make out because it is difficult to estimate each valuation items through all kind of field situations and items of RMR have interdependence. So the experts of tunnel assessment have problems with rating rock mass. In this study, using multivariate analysis based on domestic data(1011EA) of water conveyance tunnel, we presented rock mass rating system which is objective and easy to use. The constituents of RMR are decided to RQD, condition of discontinuities, groundwater conditions, orientation of discontinuities, intact rock strength, spacing of discontinuities in important order. In each step, we proposed the best multiple regression model for RMR system. And using data which have been collected at other site, we examined that presented multiple regression model was useful.

Overview of Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Protection Technology in Tunnel Construction (터널 건설에 따른 환경영향 평가 및 대응기술 개발 방향)

  • The environmental influence in tunnel construction is the drying of the ground water, the drop of the ground water level, and noise and vibration by tunnel excavation. The environmental influence can cause the change of natural ecosystem and the source of popular complaints. In case of popular complaints, the tunnel construction can be stopped or the construction period can be extended. Also, the financial loss may be reached to hundreds of billions won. The technology development to minimize the environmental influence in the tunnel construction is very important in order to control popular complaints and to preserve ecosystem. It should be required the investigation, the evaluation, and the assessment of environmental impact to reduce environmental influence in the tunnel construction. The objective of this research is to review the environmental impact assessment in Korea and to introduce the environmental protection technology which minimizes the environmental influence generated in the tunnel construction.

  • The safety factor of a tunnel considering the failure of supports is important because the failure of supports might cause the collapse of the tunnel. In the previous studies, shotcrete was modelled as beam elements and the failure of the shotcrete was checked according to the allowable working stress concept. In this study, shotcrete was modelled by both beam elements and continuum (elasto-plastic) elements. Safety factors of tunnels were estimated by two dimensional numerical analysis with varying rock mass class, coefficient of lateral pressure, thickness of shotcrete, rock bolt reinforcement and excavation method. Also the study suggested not only a proper amount of supports but also modelling method.
