Permeability Coefficient of Unsaturated Soil in Steep Slope Failure Area (붕괴가 발생한 급경사지의 현장 투수계수)

  • To examine saturation characteristics of an unsaturated soil in the steep slope area with collapse, it separated dry season from rainy season and measured water content and permeability, and measured permeability by using a tension infiltrometer in the site. In addition, it conducted electrical resistivity survey to look into thickness of ground and geological structure of underground. The collapsed slope increased depth of weathered zone compared to upper slope, and there electrical resistivity anomalous zone caused by the filtrated underground water was observed. The permeability of the collapsed area was observed high compared to upper and lower slopes of retarding basin without collapse, and the permeability measured by dividing the dry season and rainy season was measured high in case of dry season.

  • A room-and-pillar underground structure is characterized by its grid-type array of room and pillar. As a result, its construction and economical efficiency can be governed by excavation sequence. In this study, the construction period by the drill and blast method which can be treated as a main sequence for excavation was examined by considering the regulation for blasting and construction standard of estimation in Korea. To evaluate the construction period for the room-and-pillar underground structure constructed in 4 kinds of square-type area ($30{\times}30{\sim}57{\times}57m$), the concurrent excavation pattern which was suggested in the previous researches was used. From the suggested condition, the total construction period by drill-and-blast method can be estimated with the consideration of the construction area, number of jumbo drill and faces in operation.

Three-dimensional Stability Analysis of A Large Underground Hall in Mined Area (채굴적 주변 대형 지하광장의 3차원 안정성해석)

  • Numerical analysis using FLACSD has been conducted to estimate the stability of a large underground hall that is to be excavated in a mined area and constructed as an unit of a resort park. Numerical modelling is divided into two stages. The first stage is related to the analysis of the mechanical stability of the hall itself and the second to that of the influence of an adjacent mined cavity upon the hall. In the first stage, the stability of the hall is judged from the interpretation of numerical results in three respects: convergence of the unbalanced force of the model, occurrence of plastic zones and distribution of the displacement. In the second stage, variation of the stress state around the underground hall due to the existence of the cavity is compared to that in the case of the absence of the cavity. Through these analyses, it could be known that the large underground hall is not exposed to any mechanical problems and also not affected by the adjacent cavity.   • Recently, in order to solve the traffic congestion in urban areas and to improve the peripheral environment, research on the design and construction technology development of great depth underground double-deck tunnel is under way by using the underground space in the urban area. The network type double-deck tunnel is in the form of an intersection with a small cross section and a steep slope as per construction at the base of a flatland, so that the fire smoke spreads rapidly in case of fire, which is expected to cause damage of human life. Therefore, this study is analyzed the delay effect of fire smoke diffusion according to the installation and non - installation of delay system for fire smoke diffusion at the intersection. Fire fumes were delayed up to 270 seconds when the delay system for fire smoke diffusion was installed at the intersection and it is analyzed that the greater the operating area of the delay system for fire smoke diffusion, the more preventable the damage of human life of the intersection.

Geochemical Evolution of Mixing Zone with Freshwater and Seawater near the Coast Area during Underground Space Construction (지하공간건설 시 해안인근 담수-해수 혼합대의 지화학적 진화)

  • To understand the hyrogeochemical variation of bedrock aquifer during underground space construction, various graphical methods including multiple-component plots and chemical trends were used to estimate the mixing rate between seawater and freshwater and to investigate the evolution of water quality. The water chemistry and mixing rate between fresh and sea waters, which are generally localized in the construction area (MW-7, in land), shows typical characteristics of freshwater that doesn’t affect its validity as seawater intrusion. Especially, the water chemistry of a MW-4 (coastline) was classified as Na-Cl type, Na-HCO3 type, and Ca-Cl type due to the influence of the seawater intrusion. And hydrogeochemical and isotopic data show that local freshwater is subjected to geochemical processes, such as reverse ion-exchange. Throughout the Chadha’s diagrams, four different case histories with the temporal and spatial variation of groundwaters in the study area were proposed, which is recommended to interpret the hydrogeochemical reactions effectively.

  • The west underground express way is a recent initiated BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) project for releasing heavy traffic of the existing west express way which is notorious on-ground road for extremely traffic stuck area in the west of Seoul, South Korea. The new express way for light vehicles is the first double-deck tunnel ever designed in South Korea and 10.91 km long including both open cut structures and concrete lining with middle-deck in bored tunnel. Because the new express way is going through underground of heavily populated area, mechanical & electrical design for the safety of drivers in tunnel is one of the most important parts among many design issues. This paper discusses M & E design focuses including ventilation-evacuation plan and various safety facilities.

Deeper Underground Greater Metropolitan Express Train Network Effect (긴급제언 - 대심도 광역지하급행철도 네트워크 효과)

  • The modal split structure of the Korea's transportation system has been dominated by road-oriented structure. The shortage of the inftrastructure to accommodate the rapidly increasing travel demand has brought about socio-economic losses such as severe traffic congestion and high logistic costs, and thereby weakened the competitiveness of the country. Highway transportation sector is more vulnerable to energy consumption comparing with railway sector since the highway sector is dependent mostly on fossil fuels for its energy source. In 2006 annual road cogestion costs in Korea reached 24.6 trillion won, with an average annual growth rate of 5.4%. The annual road congestion cost of intercity highways were 9.2 trillion won. As the new cities that recently developed are located far from Seoul area, the boundary of commuting in Seoul metropolitan area is extended. It makes passengers have longer trips with longer travel time, and the congestion problem to be more serious. In this regards, Gyeonggi Provincial Government proposed a deeper underground metropolitan express train system for the greater Metropolitan area. which is named as GTX. Gyeonggi Province suggested 3 key underground lines, based on the outcome of the feasibility study conducted by the Korea Society of Transportation, and submitted to the Ministry of Land Transportation and Maritime Affairs for its review. If the project is approved for construction and completed in 2016, the daily volume of surface traffic bound for Seoul will be reduced substantially and therefore the users will be benefitted for time savings by an annual amount of 2 trilion won every year.

  • Discontinuities developed in a sedimentary rock mass are the most important factor to determine mechanical properties of the rock mass. Parameters described discontinuities in rock mass generally connote heterogeneity and uncertainty. In this study, probabilistic statistics method was used to determine parameters of discontinuities quantitatively and objectively. The field survey was conducted at 33 sedimentary rock slopes in Ulsan area, according to the suggested methods for the quantitative description of discontinuities in rock mass(ISRM, 1978). The engineering geological characteristics of the sedimentary rocks at Ulsan area was determined as probability distribution function deduced by analyzing parameters of discontinuities.

Investigation of water qualities and microbials on the flow-through olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus farms using coastal seawater and underground seawater in Jeju (연안해수와 지하해수를 사용하는 제주 넙치 양식장의 수질과 미생물 변동)

  • This study assessed the levels of water qualities and microbials contamination of inland olive flounder farms in Jeju in the summers from 2015 to 2017. Three farms (A-C) located in a concentrated area using mixing coastal seawater and underground seawater and one farm (D) located in an independent area using only coastal seawater were selected. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) reached a maximum of 0.898 ± 1.024 mg/L as N in the coastal seawater of A-C, which was close to the limit of the water quality management goal of the fish farm. TAN in the influent from A-C was up to three times higher than that of D, so that the discharged water did not spread to a wide range area along the coast and continued to affect the influent. TAN of the effluent in A-C increased by 2.7-4.6 times compared to the influent, resulting in serious self-pollution in the flounder farm. Heterotrophic marine bacteria in the influent of A-C was about 600 times higher than D, and the discharge of A-C was increased by about 30 times compared to the influent.
