  • We have developed the spirometer system; many patients having weak respiration have difficulties in using conventional spirometers in hospitals, because their weak breath can be affected by the errors of inertia and instrumental pressure. We have developed a new ultrasound spirometer using an ARM 920T processor. To detect weak respiratory signals, we add a comparator circuit, which can afford more information of respiration characteristics such as respiration volume, directions, and velocities. We have also developed Gill for graphical display of respiration characteristics. Through the pilot test, it has been verified that the developed spirometer is operating reliably.

  • Accurate volume measurement of the prostate is a significant role in determining the result of diagnosis and treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia. The purpose of this study was to determine, when measuring prostate volume by TRUS, whether location is more accurately determined by transaxial or longitudinal scanning. With reference to the patient's image, it was produced six prostate model. It compares the actual volume and the measurement volume, and find the optimal measurement position of each specific model. Prostate volume measured by TRUS closely correlates with prostate phantom volume. There was no significant difference(p = .156). To measure the accurate volume of prostate with focal protrusion, its length should be measured exclude the protrusions.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine, when measuring prostate volume by TRUS, whether height is more accurately determined by transaxial or midsagittal scanning. Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients who between March 1995 and March 1998 underwent both preoperative TRUS and radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer were included in this study. Using prolate ellipse volume calculation (height × length × width × 𝜋/6), TRUS prostate volume was determined, and was compared with the measured volume of the specimen. Results: Prostate volume measured by TRUS, regardless of whether height was determined transaxially or midsagittally, correlated closely with real specimen volume. When height was measured in one of these planes, a paired t test revealed no significant difference between TRUS prostate volume and real specimen volume (p = .411 and p = .740, respectively), nor were there significant differences between the findings of transaxial and midsagittal scanning (p = .570). A paired sample test, however, indicated that TRUS prostate volumes determined transaxially showed a higher correlation coefficient (0.833) and a lower standard deviation (9.04) than those determined midsagittally (0.714 and 11.48, respectively). Conclusion: Prostate volume measured by TRUS closely correlates with real prostate volume. Furthermore, we suggest that when measuring prostate volume in this way, height is more accurately determined by transaxial than by midsagittal scanning.

  • Pulmonary function tests are widely used to diagnose and determine patients' therapy in clinic. And it was also applied in the research of the physiology and dynamics for lung disease. Among the pulmonary function tests, spirometry is the most easy and economic test. Spirometers are medical instruments that measure the instantaneous rate of volume flow of respired Bas. The mechanical spirometer was mostly used in the past. Up to the present, the most popular method of spirometer is the differential pressure technique with which change in the volume of flow are transferred to change in pressure. This kind of instrument suffers from several limitations, pressure drop, difficulty in maintenance and short period of calibration. Therefore, this study has begun to implement ultrasound spirometer, which is free of pressure loss and has wide range, focusing on the flow measurement technique and diagnostic algorithm.

  • 3-D orthogonal woven carbon/Al composites were fabricated using a pressure infiltration casting method. Especially, to minimize geometrical deformation of fiber pattern and $Al_4C_3$ formation, the process parameters of the minimum pressurizing force, melting temperature, delay and holding time of molten aluminum pressurizing was optimized through the PC-controlled monitoring system. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) was utilized to measure the effective elastic constants of 3-D orthogonal woven carbon/Al composites. The CTE measurement was conducted using strain gages in a heating oven.

  • The objective of this research was to study the effect of contact force of ultrasonic probe on the ultrasonic attenuation measurement of radish. The relationship between ultrasonic attenuation (y) and contact force (x) for radish can be expressed as equation y=a+bLn(x), where a=8.7194+2.l68x(porosity) and b =-9.9188+0.0075 ${\times}$ (volume). The relationship between ultrasonic power spectrum (y) and contact force (x) for radish is also represented by equation y=a+bLn(x), where a= 60.l965-1.47l4${\times}$(porosity). The coefficient b has no significant relation with radish properties.

  • Objective: This study was performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency (RF) myolysis under transvaginal ultrasound guidance. Methods: Transvaginal RF myolysis had been performed in one hundred nine women with uterine leiomyoma at Chung-Ang University hospital between Dec. 2004 and Mar. 2007. All patients, mean aged $42.8{\pm}5.8$ years, desired their uterine conservation. Patients underwent physical examination, transvaginal pelvic ultrasound for measurement of the lesions preoperatively. Follow up was done at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months after RF myolysis by same physician and measurement of size and volume of myoma and improvement of myoma specific symptoms such as menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea were checked at each visit. Results: The mean maximal diameter of myomas treated by RF myolysis was $6.1{\pm}0.5\;cm$ and average time of the procedure was $16.3{\pm}8.5$ minutes. A significant decrease of myoma size and volume was observed at 1 month after myolysis. Mean reduction in maximal diameter was $29.9{\pm}4.8%$ at 1 week (p<0.001), $41.5{\pm}1.5%$ at 1 month (p=0.05), $46.2{\pm}3.9%$ at 3 months (p=0.003), $54.6{\pm}6.1%$ at 6 months (p<0.001) after RF myolysis respectively. Mean reduction in volume was $44.4{\pm}8.3%$ (p=0.001), $68.1{\pm}4.2%$ (p=0.035), 73.9$73.9{\pm}4.8%$ (p=0.042), $84.5{\pm}5.1%$ (p<0.001) at the same follow up period respectively. Significant improvement of symptom was observed at 3 months after RF myolysis. Transient low abdominal pain and prolonged vaginal bleeding were detected in 3 patients each but spontaneously resolved and no serious complication has been noticed or found. Conclusion: This study shows transvaginal RF myolysis could be a safe and effective method to treat uterine leiomyoma, allowing uterine conservation with significant volume reduction and rapid return to normal activity.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of vibratory stimulation on recovery of muscle function from delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Volunteers performed 3 set of 70 % maximal voluntary eccentric muscle contraction and induced DOMS. volunteers were allocated to one of three treatment group after DOMS : group I (control), group II (ultrasound), group III (vibration). Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Range Of Motion (ROM), Root Mean Square (RMS), Median frequency (MDF), Blood Serum Creatine Kinase (CK), Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) were recorded at baseline, and 24, 48, 72 hours post-exercise. In MVIC measurement, there was a statistically significant difference in group III compared to group I (p < .05). In VAS measurements, there were a statistically significant difference in group II and III compared to group I (p < .05). In ROM measurement, there was a statistically difference in group II and III compared to group I (p < .05). In Muscle Volume with Ultrasonography measurement, there was no statistically significant difference in any groups (p > .05). In RMS and MDF measurement, there were a statistically significant difference in group II and III compared to group I (p < .05). In Blood samples of CK and LDH measurements, There were no statistically significant difference in any groups (p > .05). From the above result, Vibratory stimulation had a positive effect on recovery of muscle function from delayed onset muscle soreness. Further studies should be undertaken to ascertain the more effectiveness of vibratory stimulation and may be a promising treatment modality.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a badge-type passive sampler for the measurement of short-term nitrogen dioxide and to evaluate its performance. The principle of the method is a colorimetric reaction of nitrogen dioxide with sulfanilic acid, N-1-naphthylethylendiamine, and phosphoric acid. First, it has been shown that the filter paper should be rinsed with ultrapure water and ultrasound, and then dried in a vacuumed desiccator. The concentration and volume of absorption reagent (triethanolamine) were $20\%$ and 100 ${\mu}L$, respectively. The extraction time was determined as 60 min. Second, duplicate measurements (n= 116) were carried out for evaluating the precision of the passive sampler. The relative error and the correlation coefficient between duplicates are $3.4\pm 3.0\%$ and 0.994, respectively. In addition, the $95\%$ confidence interval of intraclass correlation coefficient and the estimated value are 0.992$\sim$0.996 and 0.994, respectively. Third, a paired t-test was carried out for evaluating the accuracy of the passive sampler (n=40). In the result of the test, the $95\%$ confidence interval of the difference was -1.710 ppb <$\gamma$< 0.788 ppb. Finally, the average concentration of blanks, measurement detection limit, limit of detection, and limit of quantification are $2.4\pm 0.4$ ppb, 104 ppb, 3.8 ppb, and 7.0 ppb, respectively.

  • Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been widely used nowadays for several common orthopaedic-related sports medicine conditions with the theoretical basis that PRP supplies numerous autologous growth factors from concentrated platelets needed to promote the healing process of injured tissue. Even though there are many basic sciences, animal studies and some clinical studies regarding PRP injections for musculoskeletal injuries which suggested good results, it is difficult to compare these various studies due to marked methodological differences such as PRP preparation method, the timing, volume and number of injection, and the outcome measurement tool. In addition, many studies have no control groups or a limited sample size, and there are few prospective randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of PRP injections. Therefore, well designed high-quality randomized studies are required to confirm the preliminary results until now and provide scientific evidence to support its use, and the paucity of scientific clinical evidence suggest that the administration of PRP on humans for musculoskeletal injuries should be performed with caution.
