  • Although ultrasonic CT is one of the useful techniques for tissue characterization, the reconstructed images, such as the velocity distribution and attenuation constant distribution, are degraded by reflection and refraction of ultrasonic beam. This paper studied the degradation effects on attenuation images using agar gel phantoms which were developed to evaluate ultrasonic CT. We found that the reconstructed attenuation constants at the center of the phantoms were less than the actual values by 0.6 dB/cm when phantom velocity differs by 25 m/s from surrounding saline. We also studied a correction method for refraction and phase cancellation effects, where the correction was made using the maximum value in the received subdata, as obtained by sub-arraying microprobes located at each sampling point. Using this method, we could obtain an improvement in the reconstructed image by the correction on the attenuation effect.

  • It is required that the compressive strength of concrete should be estimated accurately from the view point of efficient quality control and maintenance of buildings. In this paper, the equations to estimate the compressive strength of concrete using granite aggregates were suggested for both rebound hammer method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method. The results were compared with those for different age or curing condition. The rebound numbers for concrete cured in air were larger than for concrete cured in water. The difference between rebound numbers for concrete cured in water and in air was larger than for concrete cured in water. The difference between rebound numbers for concrete cured in water and in air was larger when water cement ratio was high. Also, with the increase of age, the velocity of ultrasonic pulse for concrete cured in air was measured larger when compared with that in water.

  • The remaining life estimation for the aged component is very important because mechanical properties of the compo-nents are degraded with time of service exposure in high temperature etc. The destructive method is widely used for the estimation of material degradation, but it has a difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. In order to evaluate the feasibility of ultrasonic evaluation method for properties of high temperature materials, 2.25Cr-1Mo steel specimens which were prepared by the isothermal aging heat treatment at 63$0^{\circ}C$ were evaluated by ultra-sonic measurements investigating the change of velocities and attenuation coefficient. In this results, attenuation coefficient was found to be sensitive to material degradation mainly attributed to the change of grain size and the precipitation of impurities in grain boundaries, but velocity was not for all specimens.

  • In case of tissue characterization from ultrasonic echo signal, it is difficult to evaluate an absolute physical quantity because of redundancy in the echo signal. For it, in this paper a possibility of characterization of ultrasonic velocity distribution in multilayered medium using dip points analysis method from the reflected echo spectrum is discussed. To prove the possibility of this method, effect of interference phenomenon, impedance difference, attenuation, and thickness is discussed by computer simulation, and then the results confirm the effectiveness. And results of simple experiment are presented.

  • Recently, remodeling is increasing due to aging of buildings. Therefore, the importance of quality control of structures has been raised, and interest in safety diagnosis and evaluation of structures has been increasing. In order to accurately diagnose old buildings, a diagnostic evaluation technique is needed to evaluate the defects of structures in advance. In addition, as the safety diagnostic criteria for reconstruction are improved and the weight of structural safety is increased, researches on safety diagnosis techniques of structures that are faster and more reliable are needed. In this study, we tried to estimate the compressive strength by examining the correlation between ultrasonic pulse velocity and compressive strength of a 1 story structure consisting of vertical and horizontal members of reinforced concrete using ultrasonic pulse velocity method, which is one of the nondestructive testing methods. The purpose of this study is to examine the applicability in the field. As a result, the estimated average error rate of the compressive strength of the structure using the ultrasonic pulse velocity method was 28.7%, which confirmed the applicability in the field. However, in order to increase the accuracy of the estimation, the necessity of the reliable diagnostic method using the composite nondestructive testing method was confirmed.

  • This paper descirbes about effects of refraction of ultrasonic beam on B-mode tomogram. Both compution based on Snell's law and the experiments performed using B-mode scanner and schlieren optical method are discussed on a circular phantom immersed in water. In these results, if the discrepancy of sound velocity is more than 0. 6%, the distortion of the B-mode image becomes conspicuous and a target beyound the phantom may disappear or displayed as two targets depending on the velocity of the phantom.

  • To evaluate rock bolt integrity, destructive test such as pull-out test has been commonly carried out. This method is known as time consuming, expensive, and inaccurate procedure. To improve destructive method, non-destructive techniques using transmitted guided ultrasonic waves were suggested. Note for the transmission method, the source for the generation of ultrasonic waves should be installed during the rock bolt construction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reflection method using reflected guided ultrasonic waves to evaluate the integrity of the rock bolt grouted, and to compare the results evaluated by the reflection and transmission methods. The guided waves are generated by PZT element and received by AE sensor. The measured signals are analyzed by the wavelet transform. The results show that the energy velocities of guided ultrasonic waves increase with the defect ratio in both transmission and reflection method. The reflection method produces the lower velocity in all defect ratio. This research demonstrates that the reflection method may be suitable and easer method for the field tests.

  • Multi-path ultrasonic Sow measurement system uncertainty is determined by assigning an expected error of each component of flow measurement and then defining the total flow measurement uncertainty as square root of the sum of squared values of the individual error. Sources of uncertainty for flow measurement are geometry, transit time and velocity profile integration uncertainty. A theoretical uncertainty model for multi-path ultrasonic transit time flowmeter configured with parallel 5 chords, is derived from and calculated by dry calibration method.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of guided ultrasonic waves propagating in aluminum-epoxy-aluminum adhesive plates. In particular, this study investigated the effect of the epoxy thickness on the dispersive patterns, such as the phase velocity and group velocity of guided ultrasonic waves. In addition to investigating the dispersive curves, a numerical simulation using the pulse-echo method was carried out. This simulation showed that the degree of sensitivity of the epoxy thickness is dependent on the curvature of the phase and group dispersion curves, the maximum amplitude of the received time signals, and the peak frequency of the real components of the Fourier transform. Then, the linear relations between the epoxy thickness and the received and transformed signals were constructed to estimate the epoxy thickness.

  • A five path ultrasonic and/or magnetic flowmeter were installed after valve. Five path ultrasonic flowmeter were tested to obtain it's performance in a water flow standard system and magnetic flowmeter. It's varied with straight pipe length(nD), install direction and valve position. All the results are summerized. The multi-path flowmeters(MUF) showed up to $\pm0.5{\%}$ at a 2, 4, 8, 15D spacing : the MUF was significantly better than magnetic flowmeter at disturbed flow conditions.
