The authors fabricated ultrasonic transducer with PVDF[poly(vinylidene fluoride)] piezoelectric polymer film. When impulse waves were applied to the PVDF ultrasonic transducer, the dependence of the response properties on the backing material with copper was investigated through not only theoretical calculations using Mason's equivalent circuit but also experimental measurements. The experimental pulse response properties agree with those of the theoretical calculations and the pulses were shorter than those for a PZT transducer. If such short-pulse properties are used in an medical ultrasonic image diagnosis apparatus, the resolution of the apparatus will be improved. When the insertion loss was calculated theoretically to the PVDF ultrasonic transducer, the frequency characteristics of its showed wideband frequency.

Ultrasonic treatment of KOCC was tried to explore the possibility for improvement of KOCC quality as a raw material for making industrial packaging paper and paperboard. The effect of pH, stock consistencies and treatment times on the ultrasonic response of KOCC were investigated. WRV, apparent density, tensile index and burst index were improved as pH of KOCC slurry is increased. However highest tear index and stiffness were obtained at pH 8. It was also found that the highest WRV and strength properties could be obtained at 0.5% of KOCC consistency during ultrasonic treatment. WRV and most strength properties were improved with ultrasonic treatment time. It was found that ultrasonic treatment can be used as a useful mean for KOCC modificaton.

Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy (Ultrasonic-AFM) has been used to investigate the elastic property of the ultra-thin coating layer in a thin-film system. The modified Hertzian theory was applied to predict the contact resonance frequency through accurate theoretical analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the cantilever. We coat 200 nm thick Aluminum and Titanium thin films on the substrate using the DC Magnetron sputtering method. The amplitude and phase of the contact resonance frequency of a vibrating cantilever varies in response to the local stiffness constant. Ultrasonic-AFM images were obtained using the variations in the elastic property of the materials. The morphology of the surface was clearly observed in the Ultrasonic-AFM images, but was barely visible in the topography. This research demonstrates that Ultrasonic-AFM is a promising technique for visualizing the distribution of local stiffness in the nano-scale thin coatings.
This study focused on the influences regarding the use of polyepoxide-based polymer and silica fume (SF) on the fresh and hardened state properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC) along with their impacts on electrical resistance and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). To do so, two series of compositions each of which consists of twelve mixes, with water to binder (W/B) ratios of 0.35 and 0.4 were cast. Three different silica fume/binder ratios of 0, 5%, and 10% were considered along with four different polymer/binder ratios of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Afterwards, the rupture modulus, tensile strength, 14-day, 28-day, and 90-day compressive strength, the UPV and the electrical resistance of the mixes were tested. The results indicated that although the use of polymer could enhance the passing and filling abilities, it could lead to a decrease of segregation resistance. In addition, the interaction of the SF and the polymeric contents enhanced the workability. However, the impacts regarding the use of polymeric contents on fresh state properties of SCLC were more prevalent than those regarding the use of SF. Besides the fresh state properties, the durability and mechanical properties of the mixes were affected due to the use of polymeric and SF contents. In other words, the use of the SF and the polymer enhanced the durability and mechanical properties of SCLC specimens.

The ultrasonic horn used for bonding of flip chip has been designed to vibrate at a natural frequency. The ultrasonic horn must be manufactured accurately in physical terms, because the small change of mechanical properties may result in the significant change of natural frequency. Therefore, tight tolerance is inevitable to keep the natural frequency in acceptable range. However, since tightening of the tolerance increases the manufacturing cost significantly, trade-off between the cost and accuracy is necessary. In this research, an attempt was made to design the ultra sonic horn within acceptable natural frequency while the manufacturing cost was kept as low as possible. For this purpose, among the 18 tolerances of physical terms of the ultrasonic horn, the most important 4 factors were selected using Taguchi method. The equation to relate those main factors and the natural frequency was made using response surface method. Finally, optimal design scheme for minimum manufacturing cost without a loss of performance was determined using SQP method.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the fabrication of $\beta$-PVDF($\beta$-Polyvinylidene fluoride, $\beta$-PVF2) organic thin films through the vapor deposition method and to investigate the ultrasonic response properties of the organic thin films produced. Vapor deposition was performed under the following conditions : the temperature of evaporator, the applied electric field and the pressure of reaction chamber were $270^{\circ}C$, 142.4 kV/cm and $2.0{\times}10^{-5}\;Torr$, respectively. The results showed that the degree of crystallinity increased from 47% to 67.8% with an increase in the substrate temperature. In the case of a sensor response characteristic by varying the distance from 1cm to 100cm, the output voltage decreased from 0.615V to 0.4V.

In this paper, a uniform speed controller for an ultrasonic rotary motor is developed using the phase-difference method. The phase difference method uses traveling waves to drive the ultrasonic motor. The traveling waves are obtained by adding two standing waves that have a different phase to each other. A compact phase-difference driver system is designed and integrated by combining VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) and phase shifter. Theoretically the relationship between the phase difference in time and the rotational speed of the ultrasonic motor is sine function, which is verified by experiments. Then a series of experiments under various loading conditions are conducted to characterize the motor's performance that is the relationship between the speed and torque. Proportional-integral control is adopted for the uniform speed control. The proportional control unit calculates the compensating phase-difference using the rotating speed which is measured by an encoder and fed back. Integral control is used to eliminate steady-state errors. Differential control for reducing overshoot is not used since the response of ultrasonic motor is prompt due to its low inertia and friction-driving characteristics. The developed controller demonstrates reasonable performance overcoming disturbing torque and the changes in material properties due to continuous usage.

The aim of the study is to develope the processing technique of PZT-Polymer piezoelectric composite materials for ultrasonic transducer application such as biomedical probe and hydrophone. Piezoelectric composite of PZT and polymer with 1-3 connectivity patterns have been fabricated by dicing-filling method and extrusion forming method. In this study processing forming method. In the study processing steps by extrusion forming method in the preperation of PZT/polymer piezoelectric composites are described. The PZT powder used in the study is commercial powder which is prepared by mixing PbO, TiO$_2$ and ZrO$_2$. The binder, water and plasticizer are mixed with the PZT powder to form a slip. It is necessary to adjust the viescosity of slip according on the PZT rod diameters to be extruded. The electromechanical properties of the piezoelectric composites are characterized in terms of the thickness resonance mode. The pulse response characteristics by the ultrasonic transducer analyzer and osciloscope are evaluated.

The characteristics of ultrasonic signal in insulation oil were investigated by optical fiber sensor(OFS) utilizing Mach-Zehnder interferometer. For checking the response properties of OFS ultrasonic signal was generated by function generator in various kinds of insulation oil. The attenuation of ultrasonic signal linearly increased with the increase of viscosity of insulation oil in log scale. Discharging signal was produced by neele-sphere electrode system. Intensity of discharging signal was plotted in terms of cumulative $y^2$ and the intensity of discharging signal in new oil was little bigger than that in serviced one.
Investigating the properties and durability of high-strength concrete exposed to sulfuric acid attack for the purpose of its application in structures exposed to this acid is of outmost importance. In this research, the resistance and durability of high-strength concrete containing macro-polymeric or steel fibers together with the pozzolans of silica fume or nano-silica against sulfuric acid attack are explored. To accomplish this goal, in total, 108 high-strength concrete specimens were made with 9 different mix designs containing macro-polymeric and steel fibers at the volume fractions of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0%, as well as the pozzolans of silica fume and nano-silica with the replacement levels of 10 and 2%, respectively. After placing the specimens inside a 5% sulfuric acid solution in the periods of 7, 21, and 63 days of immersion, the effect of adding the fibers and pozzolans on the compressive properties, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and weight loss of high-strength concrete was investigated and the respective results were compared with those of the reference specimens. The obtained results suggest the dependency of the resistance and durability loss of high-strength concrete against sulfuric acid attack to the properties of fibers as well as their fraction in concrete volume. Moreover, compared with using nano-silica, using silica fume in the fibrous concrete mix leads to more durable specimens against sulfuric acid attack. Finally, an optimum solution for the design parameters where the crushing load of high-strength fibrous concrete is maximized was found using response surface method (RSM).
