  • This paper describes the evaluation of a force-reflecting interface with ultrasonic motors(USMs). The force-reflecting interface allows a human to feel object within virtual environment. To effectively display the mechanical impedance of the human hand we need a haptic device with specific characteristics, such as low inertia, almost zero friction and very high stiffness. USMs have attracted considerable attention as the actuator satisfied these conditions. USMs combine features such as high driving torque at low rotational speed, high holding torque and fast response therefore we studied two degree of freedom force-reflecting haptic system.

  • Ferrite plating enables were grown by ferrite by plating method in solution at low temperature(<10$0^{\circ}C$). This faciltates the fabrication of new ferrite thin film devices using non- heat-resistant materials(plastic, GaAs ect) as substrates. Combining the ferrite plating with sonochemistry, application of power ultrasonic waves to stimulate chemical reactions, the crystallinity and qualities of films were improved. Modifying the reactions cell and plating conditions further improved the film quality.

  • To improve the carbon recovery yield of chemical pretreatment in soil and sediment for $^{14}C$ age dating using AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry), we have developed ultrasonic method in chemical pretreatment to replace with stirring method which has been generally used in each step of humic acid extraction for soil and sediment samples. Extraction conditions such as ultrasonic power, temperature and reaction time have been optimized. Six times higher carbon recovery yield could be obtained from low carbon content samples using ultrasonic method. We also compared the dating results by AMS obtained using ultrasonic method with the ages of samples treated by the stirring method. It was found that this new method could be applied to the pretreatment process of low carbon content samples for AMS age dating without effects on the dated ages, and with highly improved carbon recovery yields.

  • Ultrasonic surgical devices are routinely used for surgical procedures. The incision and coagulation of tissue generate a temperature of $40^{\circ}C-150^{\circ}C$ and depend on the controllable output power level of the surgical device. Recently, research on the classification of grasped tissues to automatically control the power level was published. However, this research did not consider the specific characteristics of the surgical device, tissue denaturalization, and so on. Therefore, this research proposes a robust algorithm that simulates noise to resemble real situations and classifies tissue using conventional classifier algorithms. In this research, the bioimpedance spectrum for six tissues (liver, large intestine, kidney, lung, muscle, and fat) is measured, and five classifier algorithms are used. A signal-to-noise ratio of additive white Gaussian noise diversifies the testing sets, and as a result, each classifier's performance exhibits a difference. The k-nearest neighbors algorithm shows the highest classification rate of 92.09% (p < 0.01) and a standard deviation of 1.92%, which confirms high reproducibility.

  • Pipe wall thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion and various types of erosion is a significant and costly damage phenomenon in secondary piping systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Most NPPs have management programs to ensure pipe integrity due to wall thinning that includes periodic measurements for pipe wall thicknesses using nondestructive evaluation techniques. Numerous measurements using ultrasonic tests (UTs; one of the nondestructive evaluation technologies) have been performed during scheduled outages in NPPs. Using the thickness measurement data, wall thinning rates of each component are determined conservatively according to several evaluation methods developed by the United States Electric Power Research Institute. However, little is known about the conservativeness or reliability of the evaluation methods because of a lack of understanding of the measurement error. In this study, quantitative models for UT thickness measurement deviations of nuclear pipes and fittings were developed as the first step for establishing an optimized thinning evaluation procedure considering measurement error. In order to understand the characteristics of UT thickness measurement errors of nuclear pipes and fittings, round robin test results, which were obtained by previous researchers under laboratory conditions, were analyzed. Then, based on a large dataset of actual plant data from four NPPs, a quantitative model for UT thickness measurement deviation is proposed for plant conditions.

Analysis of the Ultrasonic Cavitation Energy in a Large-Scale Sonoreactor (Lrge-Scale 초음파 반응기에서의 내부 초음파 에너지 분포 분석)

  • Ultrasonic cavitational energy distributions were measured in a large-scale sonoreator. In application of 110 and 170 kHz of ultrasound, the cavitational energy was just detected near the transducer module. However 35 and 72 kHz ultrasound made good distributions from the module to the end of the sonoreactor, Especially, 72 kHz ultrasound application showed most stable and highest cavitational energy value through the whole length. In the comparison between input power and cavitational energy, linear relationships were obtained in 35 and 72 kHz and it was anticipated that these results would be used for the optimization of input power for the design of sonoreactors. And three dimensional energy distribution was depicted through the mapping of cavitaional energy. Average energy in the large-scale sonoreactor was estimated as 62.8 W, which was about 40 % of input power.

  • High quality of turbine babbit bearing has to be maintained for smooth operation of power plants. So in the research center of the Korea Electric Power Company, Ultrasonic testing has been peformed on the spare part of babbit bearing during past ten years. Since separation between babbit bearing and base metal was seen for most of the bearings in stock, investigation has begun in order to see the effect on temperature and humidity variation of the separation, and thus searching for the optimum storage method.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for compliance control of a SCARA type 2-freedom direct drive(DD) manipulator. Each joint of the manipulator is driven by a travelling ultrasonic motor(USM). The travelling USM has good some characteristics over conventional servo motors such as compact size, light weight, silent motion, high torque and high speed response. By controlling the elasticity and viscosity of robot joints, a robot can work in compliance with external environment. we control the elastic coefficient and the viscous coefficient of joint by adjusting the phase difference of the motor power. And we contemplate transient response of USM with adjusting the elastic coefficient and the viscous coefficient. To use the result, we can control the robot to reach its goal with compliance motion. It remains for further research to develop the impedance control of USM.

  • In this paper, we propose the intelligent robot control technique for mobile robot using personal digital assistants (PDA). With the proposed technique, the mobile rebot can trace human at regular intervals by the remote control method with PDA. The mobile robot can recognize the distances between it and human whom the robot must follow with both multi-ultrasonic sensors and PC-camera and then, can inference the direction and velocity of itself to keep the given regular distances. In the first place, the mobile robot acquires the information about circumstances using ultrasonic sensor and PC-camera then secondly, transmits the data to PDA using wireless LAN communication. Finally, PDA recognizes the status of circumstances using the fuzzy logic and neural network and gives the command to mobile robot again.
